Title: Dentist.
Post by: herthab on Tuesday, September 9, 2008, 09:27:34
I went to the dentist a couple of weeks ago and was told I needed a tooth extracted. An appointment was made and I was told the cost would be about 46 quid. Since then my dentist has twice cancelled my appointment due to staff illness.

The aforementioned tooth was hurting like a bastard yesterday and so, not wishing to wait any longer, I phoned South Somerset Emergency Dental Hotline to see if I could see anybody today. I had to lie and say I wasn't registered with a dentist at the moment (I might as well not be registered as I never see him!) and they got me an appointment today.

The puzzling thing is this: At my own NHS dentist, an extraction costs 46 quid. Going to an emergency dentist, the extraction will cost 16 quid. £30.00 less, but both NHS. Anybody know why this is?

The extra £30 is probably for anaesthetic.

I'm going to ask if they can do that today as well, although it doesn't hurt (Yet).

NHS is done on price bands:

1) £16.20 for checkup, scale&polish, x rays etc.

2) £44.60 for all band 1 plus fillings and tooth extraction and root canal

3) £198 for all of band 1 & 2 plus any work on bridges, crowns or dentures (you might be needing these soon).

Emergency treatment is charged at £16.20, even if you have more appointments/work done. You will need to have something pretty wrong, but tooth needing to be extracted is just that.

Oh and having a tooth out doesn't hurt at all. It's the noise that'll make you cringe though.

Wish I did have dentures Si, wouldn't spend so much time and money on dentists then!

Really? The only pain I felt is when he yanked on the tooth the first time - that killed, even though I thought half my face was completely numb. After that didn't feel a thing. He was digging bits out with a knife and everything because the tooth broke up.

So in other words don't worry about it Hertha.

Also the hole that's left there takes aaaaagggggees to over. Mine has just about grown gum over the top, but I had my tooth out back in May.

i think i was 13 when i had mine out, so it perhaps wasnt that bad. it sstung like hell though. And hearing him wriggling your teeth free is a bit unnerving.

But theres nothing to worry about hertha

Try an in grown toe nail removal, nice needle right through from one side to t'other
the injection in the roof of your mouth hurts a wee bit
At least at the top you dont feel like a slack jawed mong for four hours like on the bottom. And for injections that reallly hurt try one for an ingrown toenail on your big toe. Goes from one side to the other, hitting every bone on the way through.

Thats the worst injections I ever had also. I had 3 teeth operations as a kid, just beacuse they failed to see an extra front tooth in my gum.

having a tooth extracted was a horrible experience for me.the injection, the yanking the fucker ou,and the bleeding and mouth watering which lasted a few days and meant waking up in dribble.all because the newly qualified dentist fucked up a routine filling and hit a nerve causing me agony.(never had pain like is before or since)
the tooth extraction cost me a tenner mainly due to the dentists guilt.

I hate the dentist as much as flying, but i have to go cos i take drugs that lower my immune system so easy get infections n such if i dont go.
Last night n this morning i kept getting this flipping great pain in my gum so they told me to go for a quick emergency slot inbetween appointments so off i went....
She looked in my mouth, prodded it, took an xray of where i told her it hurt, spent an age looking at the xray then told me she wanted a second opinion. So another dentist came in, prodded my gum, bashed my teeth and looked at my xray. Then they started disscussing my gum tumour?! at which point i paniced but was too scared to ask any questions. The second dentist told the first to do a test to rule something out before they send me up the hospital, told me "dont worry" then left the room!
The first dentist then put cotton wool with cold stuff onto my teeth ( which dont hurt ). Then she told me she had finished and that they they are not entirely sure what is wrong with me! Now i  have shit loads of tablets and i have to go back next week. I was in there for 45min i only thought i had an abcess :(

You shouldn't go sticking dirty things in your mouth.

Dentists are nowt but modern day charlatans.

There are some good ones about but time after time all I hear is horror stories about being charged for unnecessary work or being misdiagnosed.

My old neighbour was told he’d have to have all of his gnashers ripped out.  He got a 2nd opinion and he was told there was nothing wrong with his pegs aside from a couple of fillings.

There is another local hoodwinker who is new on the scene who seems to tell just about every patient they grind their teeth and they need a £30 gum shield.

Going back a few years but there was some sort of early Nick-Nack-Knowles-esque investigation into dentists and they shipped a lass with perfect teeth to half a dozen of the buggers and each one told her she needed chargeable work.

If you find a good’un stick to the fucker like glue!
