Title: Grand Prix
Post by: michael on Sunday, September 7, 2008, 11:53:05
Track is damp, I think they'll all go with intermediate tyres.

Belgium would be a good grand prix to go to I think; good racing track and great beer.

I only saw the last 7 laps of the race. Incredible! Watching the Hamilton/Raikkonen scrap was immense. In a way its a shame Raikkonen went out like that as we could have had 2 more incredible laps of entertainment, but I can't complain seeing as Hamilton won it!

Quote
Lewis Hamilton has lost his victory at the Belgian Grand Prix after he was given a penalty for cutting a chicane when fighting with Kimi Raikkonen.

The stewards gave Hamilton a drive-through penalty after the race had ended, meaning 25 seconds were added to his time.

The win goes to Brazilian Felipe Massa, second in the race. The penalty has dropped Hamilton to third place in the race.

The FIA are a bunch of fucking cheating corrupt cunts. Kimmi took the place back by a car length.

Cant believe that.  Last week Ferrari demonstrated dangerous driving coming out of the pit lane and nearly colliding with another driver and get no penalty.

Corrupt bunch of morons.

The FIA are a bunch of fucking cheating corrupt cunts. Kimmi took the place back by a car length.

Hamilton clearly relinquished the place, but then overtook him again on the same straight. I wonder if Hamilton had not passed him until after the next corner then he might not have been penalised.

Title: Re: Grand Prix
Post by: Iffy's Onion Bhaji on Sunday, September 7, 2008, 16:24:32
Nothing wrong with it. Kimmi wouldn't play ball so Hamilton was forced to cut the corner. In any event Lewis gave way to Kimmi because he knew the law would stipulate that. So he's gone back into second before over taking him legally. Abosulte rubbish.

Title: Re: Grand Prix
Post by: Simon Pieman on Sunday, September 7, 2008, 18:30:35
I thought at the time that manoeuvre would cause problems. I'm not sure Hamilton backed off enough, 6km/h isn't much at all.

That said Hamilton was right in the slipstream of Kimi before that, he'd have finished there after the corner, had he been able to stay behind.

Not sure he gained an advantage, especially when you consider Kimi didn't even finish!

Title: Re: Grand Prix
Post by: Batch on Sunday, September 7, 2008, 18:57:12
McLaren are appealing, or rather are intending to. It's not 100% clear whether they can appeal a stop/go penalty.

The result of the appeal will be .... ... ... McLaren handed suspended fine for daring to challenge.

Oh joy, isn't it the Italian GP next.

Title: Re: Grand Prix
Post by: pumbaa on Sunday, September 7, 2008, 19:29:16
Ridiculous. That is all.

Feel very sorry for Raikkonen, his drive didn't warrant ending in the wall, and if the weather hadn't intervened, he would have deservedly done so.

Spa really is an awesome track. I went to the famous '98 GP (the pile up/Schumacher vs Coulthard punch up and Damon Hill winning in a Jordan race). Standing at the top of Eau Rouge watching cars come blasting through flat out is a nerve tingling experience. Standing at the bottom and looking up then makes you respect them even more - boy is that hill steep (much more so than it looks on TV).

i flicked over to see the last 6 laps or so, the last 3 or 4 laps had even my mum shouting for Hamilton.

as for THAT overtaking manouver and subsequent corner cutting, Lewis was 3/4 the way past Kimi and i'm pretty sure in the eyes of the law thats a pass. Kimi played rough, pushing him wide, and locked up. hamilton would've ended up on the grass/in the gravel had he tried to make it round the corner, kimi's tactics would have worked. hamilton took the smart option, relinquished the place, i dont see a problem.

the FIA have ferrari's cock firmly in their mouths, they always have done. it makes a fucking mockery of the sport, the most exciting finish to a race in ages and the FIA take offense to it. typical.

Title: Re: Grand Prix
Post by: pumbaa on Monday, September 8, 2008, 07:20:30
Small point of order Leggest old boy. It was the RACE stewards that applied the penalty, albeit one would assume they are representatives of the FIA in some way, shape or form. I recall Ron Dennis' interview with ITV yesterday, when he stated they immediatedly asked Charlie Whiting whether the move was acceptable and was, I believe, told it was OK.

I totally agree with your analysis though, the move looked perfectly fine to me. With hindsight though, I just wonder whether Lewis' faux pas was to pass at La Source rather than wait until later in the lap......

Title: Re: Grand Prix

If Lewis was white, German or drove for Ferarri, there would be no penalty. Just as there was no penalty last weekend for Ferrarri almost causing a pile up in the pits.

Apparently one of the McClaren team spoke to Charlie Whiting a few times to ask if what Lewis had done was OK, or if they needed to let Kimi overtake him again. Whiting said it was fine, and they've got the call recorded. I always thought the stewards worked on what Whiting told them so this could be interesting....

The FIA desperately need to improve their image the way things are going, and the decision to dock Hamilton time was absolutely ridiculous. I'll be disgusted but not entirely surprised if the Mclaren appeal isn't successful.

Ok so have I got this right....

They say the appeal is invalid because you can't appeal drive through penalties (which is fucking obvious as you'd pretty much have to re-run the race if such an appeal was upheld) and despite the fact that this was actually a time penalty because the incident occurred so late in the race, it's technically judged to be a drive through penalty.

Twats.

Title: Re: Grand Prix
Post by: axs on Tuesday, September 23, 2008, 19:24:42
yes, he was penalised for the amount of time a drive-thru would have taken, had they been capable of making a decision during the race. unfortuantely they are incompetant and didn't.

Title: Re: Grand Prix

Conspiracy theorists may wish to investigate claims that several high ranking members of the FIA (including at least one who was a member of the appeals panel hearing) are former Ferrari F1 executives/employees. I'm not convinced these are facts and wouldn't wish them passed off as such (and haven't fully investigated such rumours), but when should the truth get in the way of a good rumour eh?

This is why I don't really follow formula one anymore. As soon as something exciting happens, it goes to court.

1997 was the last season I really watched and enjoyed. On the one hand I'd disliked Villeneuve from the season prior but come the last race I was egging him on to beat the cheating German. Great final race with plenty of drama.

The thing that gets me about this 25 second penalty replacing a drive through is this. At the time the stewards defered making the decision. They had time but didn't. If L H had had the drive through he would have probably finished second. He was miles faster than any one else in that rain, & being in first place took it easy. Given the penalty at the time he could have made second place.
Second, the whole thing stinks any way. It's as plain as day that he was a forced off the track, b was in front anyway at that time, &  relinquished any advantage gained anyway just in case.
