Nowadays I'd agree with you. I'm quite interested U.S. boxing history, especially Joe Louis... Really good book called Beyond Glory: Joe Louis Vs. Max Schmeling, and a World on the Brink which I'd recommend to anyone who's interested.

Fair play he finally had a fight against a decent boxer.

I guess no one knew if he could take a big punch and today answered that question.

Khan will be back,  but that has put his title hopes back 1-2 years

Title: Re: Khan Vs Prescott
Post by: yeo on Saturday, September 6, 2008, 22:28:25
Prescot reminds me of Brian from Big Brother.

Frank Warren slipped up there big time.It will do Khan good to stop believing his own hype.

Title: Re: Khan Vs Prescott
Post by: JPC82 on Saturday, September 6, 2008, 22:30:51
Khan was way ahead of himself, saying he was ready for the title shot straight away, and talking of taking on Hatton, this could be what he needed to realise hes not as good as he thinks

Title: Re: Khan Vs Prescott

Title: Re: Khan Vs Prescott

He is a practicing Muslim so he would have been fasting, but those punches would have knocked out anyone. Ref should have stopped it after first knock down really.

The good news is that the other British hope (David Haye) has a glass jaw as well.

Of course there is. Why's everyone got a downer on Khan, he could become a great British fighter. This is probably the reality check he needed, besideds, 2 big bombs in the first minute wont come along like that again for a while.

Don't know how long that will stay on the YT...

Still not sure how good Prescott is but he can definitely bang.

Title: Re: Khan Vs Prescott
Post by: strooood on Saturday, September 6, 2008, 23:39:03
not really a downer.

when you come straight out of the amateurs and spend 3-4 years battering nobodies, not taking a punch yourself, you get questions asked about how you'll fair against proper fighters.

Khan's first real fight and he's out cold within 40 seconds. sorry mate but that wont be easy to come back from.

Title: Re: Khan Vs Prescott
Post by: Scot Munroe on Saturday, September 6, 2008, 23:41:32
knocked him down twice in the 1st 50 seconds. That is going to take a bit of time to come back from.

Title: Re: Khan Vs Prescott
Post by: DMR on Saturday, September 6, 2008, 23:42:08
Prescott's a big slow banger whose won his first fight against quality opposition - Khan's a quickfire popper who lost his first big challenge. You couldn't say Prescott is streets ahead.

Title: Re: Khan Vs Prescott
Post by: michael on Saturday, September 6, 2008, 23:43:51
His tactics were stupid. The bell goes and he went running after the guy. Don't know how much they had seen of Prescott but his KO record demands respect, even if they were all bums. I get the feeling Khan wanted to blow him away.

Frank Warren tried to blame the coach too!

Title: Re: Khan Vs Prescott

seriously, you think Prescott is big and slow?
Alot of people seem to think as soon as someone can throw proper shots it makes them a lesser 'boxer'. Khan could well come back, but lets not kid ourselves. He was defending his intercontinental title against someone who has fought as many times as him.

This was no huge superfight nor was it a massive gamble step-up in the hatton mayweather category. This was a fight he needed to win. a stepping stone to greater things. and the fella's eyeballs are rolling around in his head before his opponent has even broken sweat.

Title: Re: Khan Vs Prescott

Yeah, granted Dex, thing is only a few monthd ago you were singing Khans praises on here...

"he deserves a pop at the world title, he's a technician, quick hands, cool head and capitalises on any lapse from his opponent.
he lacks a bit of power in the punch in comparison to other lightweights (especially nate campbell) but i think he's got enough skill to do the business"

Does one fight in your early 20s change that? No, I think you were right back then. Khan's got bundles of class and if he toughens his chin he'll win lots of fights. You wrote Hatton off when FMW did jobs him... he came back to beat a decent figher in JL and I''ll lay any money he'll beat the Magic Man as well. Khan's not done.

Title: Re: Khan Vs Prescott
Post by: Simon Pieman on Sunday, September 7, 2008, 00:13:43
You don't have to go undefeated to get to World Champ.

I think Khan's recent fights have exposed his vunrebality though. I think he can make it, but he's going to have to put more work in at the gym and less work in to glorifying himself as a superstar. I don't ever think he's going to be a boxing great though.

Title: Re: Khan Vs Prescott
Post by: Batch on Sunday, September 7, 2008, 09:04:05
I think Khan's recent fights have exposed his vunrebality though.

Just the point I was going to make, though I am certainly no boxing expert.

Wasn't his last fight that he went down in too, but eventually outgunned his opponent? Now that was an exciting fight but he looked short in the defence department on what was a supposed to be a simple win.

Maybe it is something that will come with experience.

Title: Re: Khan Vs Prescott
Post by: michael on Sunday, September 7, 2008, 09:28:45
His punch resistance is very questionable but some of the punches he got caught with would have knocked out any fighter on last night's card.

Im a firm believer that one fight in boxing changes everything.
thats why i wrote off hatton after he lost to FMW.
it's not like any other sport in the sense that for months before the fight, you are consumed by it. You can't get 'caught cold' or any such nonsense. you are at the absolute peak of your abilities before that fight.

I agree with si pie, you dont have to be undefeated to win a world title. but getting knocked out within a minute against someone firmly within your bracket, is a bit different to losing on points after 12 rounds if you see what i'm getting at.

When i said that it was true. he did deserve a pop at the world title. and the superlatives i used to describe him still i still maintain.

Sure he could come back and still have a decent career but it's going to be very very difficult for him. see naseem hamed.

You make a good point in that he's only in his early 20s. it does set him apart from the likes of hatton and hamed a touch, in that he might well improve a awful lot in the next few years. it'll be tough for him.

Disagree with this in general, Lennox, for example, got KO'd twice by fighters who were nowhere near his class, but managed to come back and avenge each defeat. But even before last night's fight Khan was talking about his own chin and how he'd get back up if knocked down, which is a pretty good indicator of his mental state.

Title: Re: Khan Vs Prescott
Post by: strooood on Sunday, September 7, 2008, 13:22:07
You make a good point but i think that Lewis and Khan are in totally different places in terms of comebacks.

When Lewis lost to Oliver McCall he was the world champion. he had already defended it a handful of times. he was right up there at the pinnacle fighting number one contenders left, right and centre.

When he lost to rahman he clearly hadn't prepared and thought it was going to be a walk over.

I honestly hope im nibbling at humble pie when khan comes back and is world champ in 5 years, i honestly do.

i agree with Stroood, wont be easy for him to come back, it would have had a massive mental effect on him getting destroyed like that. Sky must be gutted, first fight into his box office contract :) ! what happens now? fight a nobody and people will moan when he wins in a few rounds or test him again? a defeat in the next fight and its game over for Kahn

And that fight shows why its important not to rush into big fights,Cox is doing the right thing, taking time and getting experience.....the tv companies offer big cash and fighters rush into fighting before they are ready.
