I used to be a member of Swindon Camra years ago before the Devizes branch got going.

I don't think I have ever been to a bad beer festival, but some are better than others.

If ever you get a chance to go to one of the Portsmouth Guildhall ones it is really worth a visit.

I always make the trip down.....up to Swindon for the Camra beer fest, the new venue is better than the old but not a patch on when it used to be in the old railway museum.

Some great food there too but the beers are fantastic! buy the half pint glass on entry along with vouchers for 8 or 10 half pints (depending on the price and layout etc) then go along and try them all, extra vouchers bought as strips of 8's or 10's and it works out normally about 75p for half a pint.

Yummy.

I always end up missing it because it always runs out of beer on the Saturday evening - usually some time during a home game and that is the only time I'm in Swindon.

I'll try harder this year.

Nottingham is meant to be the one to go to.

I'm a signed up CAMRA member, but have never been to the Swindon event.  I agree with jjedmunds post above...the half pint glass is definitely the way forward.  You do see people drinking from pint glasses at some festivals, but for me the fun is all about being able to try a wide range of beers as possible.

Thats it exactly mate, the fun is trying many and varied exotic beers from all over the UK. :)

ah, but usually if you ask they'll put half a pint in a pint glass, as they are all marked with lines anyway.

That way you get all the pleasure of sampling many halves, but you can go back for a full pint of the good ones; you don't spill as much when you fall over, as its only half full; more often than not they over fill it a bit, so you get some for free; and a pint glass is much better for drinking water out of in the morning as you don't have to get up and fill it up so often.

its all about the pint, i tells thee

oh, and if they have some bottled stuff called dragon's breath, get some but don't drink it, make a beef casserole with it, reckon it would be lovely.

Dragon's Breath? I take it that isn't the chilli-flavoured Dragon's Breath from Hopback? That might be a bit weird to cook with...

thats the stuff - nice, but thought it was a bit much to drink in large quantities.  however, a bit of braising steak, onions, mushrooms, perhaps some pearl barley, whack it all in a pot wit  a couple of bottles, then in the oven for a couple of hours on  low heat while you take the dog out - throw a few dumplings in at the end when you come back in an I reckon you'd be in business.

Yeah I could see that working.

I've had a couple of pints of it at the Gluepot and it is a bit much after a while. Hopstar did their own chilli one too but that was far hotter and nicer- but only for a pint or so.

I've heard they're going to issue an electronic key thingy instead of vouchers

Sort of a digital Camra.

I've heard it's a Mexican theme this year, a sort of Aztec Camra.

Twas a great nite. Shame you missed it Si. Some great beers tasted, and some bad ones. Ciders were also immense, and at 7.4% they definately hit the spot!
