Tell me the most influential tunes you have experienced in your life, and when you replay them, where do they take you ? Blimey Fred .... Corney moment, mine was Annes Song - John Denver. I had just split up with my girlfriend (now wife) and went to her university borrowed a record player and put it on full volume when she came round the corner. Smuck smuck corney yes, but it worked ... never regretted it. I'm also on a bit of a downer today Fred. Title: Re: Music that changed your life Post by: suttonred on Wednesday, August 20, 2008, 19:55:11 Pretty Vacant, always takes me back, back to carefree days wrapped in pins and chains, not giving a damn about anything. That and it's the best intro ever.

Tell me the most influential tunes you have experienced in your life, and when you replay them, where do they take you ? One of the things about being an old fucker, is that your life is punctuated by music associated to many events some happy, some sad, so I've got loads of stuff, which when I hear again can often take me right off. Something like You Tube is pretty amazing, because you can find stuff like Miles Davis at the Isle of Wight 1970....revisit something 38 years later, pictures as well. It's not only old stuff though because the process doesn't stop. There are a few bits of music, which I physically cannot listen to, without falling into a gibbering mess....emotionally painful, whereas others just make you want to dance. Title: Re: Music that changed your life Post by: chalkies_shorts on Wednesday, August 20, 2008, 20:48:05 Hearing Like AHurricane by Neil young on the OGWT wen I was abuot 14 was the defining musical moment for me and I've been a big fan of his since. The punk movement was also fairly seminal not only musical but political as well.

Then it was bands...didn't get any of the players out in those days..too professional. What happened in the intervening years don't know.....when I came back you'd get kammy, Kenny Stroud etc in Vadims. Reg that's one of my favourite songs of all time although since first hearing it it do prefer Patti Pravo's italian version "Il paradiso" is better!! http://uk.youtube.com/watch?v=KnjsAhTJayw&feature=related Despite the poor camera work. Not the greatest or most original album ever but it came at just the right time for me and reminds me of good times. They played that song on Planet Rock whilst I soaked in the bath earlier today...quality. For me, I had Earth vs the Wildhearts to take me through my first year of uni...it always brings me fine memories. Title: Re: Music that changed your life Post by: Reg Smeeton on Thursday, August 21, 2008, 09:51:59 Freebird makes me unhappy cos they used to play it before they chucked you out of the Heavy Metal Soundhouse in Kingsbury - aaargh Lynyrd Skynyrd = no more beer Freebird makes me think of living in Southsea...had a mate, I suppose a bit like fB who lived at home with his mum....they had a massive house, and he had a self contained 2 bed flat in the basement. His older bros were notorious hardmen...good to keep on trhe right side of, the family of Scottish extract made their money by working mines in South Africa. Me mate shared with Powerful Pierre, an enigmatic art school drop out, who looked a bit like Che....he also had an interesting collection of nazi memorabilia. Ginge, who lived round the corner was like axs, only not so clever...they used to like to go down to the sea at night for a swim....not for me too dangerous and I had a bird at home...one night Ginge never came back. Title: Re: Music that changed your life Post by: Mark Hanrahan on Sunday, August 31, 2008, 20:39:27 1) Pink Floyd - Wish You Were Here:
Takes me back to 15 y/o, living with my folks, growing up in Catford. My first taste of Floyd. 2) Screwface - Brainkilers/Third Party: The track that got me into D&B back in 92/93. Whaling vocals and intense b-line. I'd never heard anything like it until THAT day when I was strolling to school in Bellingham and heard this hammering out a window in the local council estate. 3) No Woman, No Cry - Bob Marley: Now I'm coming to the end of my first year at Uni and am sitting in some second year students garden eating pizza, enjoying a few cold beers and a cheeky schmoke. The perfect recipe for enjoying Bob. 4) Ashes to Ashes - David Bowie By now I'm in my second year at Uni and mixing with some real mind-benders. I'm listening to The Doors, Hendrix, Ozric Tentacles, loads of Floyd and working all the hours God sends in a cracking little boozer. The land lord was a BIG Bowie fan which meant free beer for as long as I could sustain a conversation about his favorite singer/songwriter and general freak. I grew to love the stuff so was generally p1ssed as a newt thanks to this tune! 5) Fight Music - D12 Now fully graduated (some 10 years on) and working my ass off to pay the mortage. I'd always been a big fan of Rap and Hip-Hop but got into the whole Shady Records movement quite late, i.e. 'The Eminem Show'. This was the track that did it for me. Reminds me of hot, sticky days in the office 'living the dream' and doing up my first proper house on the London/Kent border. Much simpler times! Christ... I could go on with this forever...! Better stop in - typical Hanrahan style - with the Top 5!
