Post by: sonic youth on Sunday, August 17, 2008, 00:25:01

Where I don't have one, I've not heard any bad experiences from people who have gone there and pretty much everyone I know who has tattoos has got them done there.

Sonic, Localy the best place to go is Mantra in Cheltnum, but....they are expensive, but you get what you pay for.
I get mine done by Mike at Skin Graffiti and the guy is an amazing artist, he's working on my leg sleeve at the moment,
Sorry if this offends anyone but please stay away from the ones in Highworth, Gorse Hill, and Sink in the ink.(milton road).
Oh and skin graff have a new website, i'll try and find it and you can check out mikes work.

thanks gents! think i'll go with skin graffiti.

when it comes to choosing the style and location, i assume a half-decent tattoo artist will give advice? i know what i want but don't want to choose a lettering style in case it's impossible to replicate on skin and am undecided on location.

Definatly sonic, they are not mind readers so as long as you have the idea the artist will work it to get the best out of it, give him your ideas and he will work with them,

Absolutely no help what so ever. But there's a place in Bristol near where Ally lives called Tattootime. I'm always really disappointed it's not called Tatooine. True story.

I've not seen any terrible work come out of there but from what i have seen from the bloke he laks proffesionalism which is a big no no in my book when it comes to tattooing

From my perspective, it was my first time and they guy was very reassuring and chatted to me the whole time which really took my nerves away.

The place is clinically clean and I felt very confident that I was being treated with the upmost care.

Having said that, I respect your comments Seb.

No place/customer is 100% perfect I suppose !

maybe he's changed, this was when he first started at the place and i had heared stories that he used be quite slimey with girls. but i've not had any work done by him, i have a tattooist i trust and i guess i will keep going to him.

i've always fancied getting a tat but i cant seem to work out if there's anything i'd like to have permanently on my skin.

i'm also quite certain that i'll regret it alot at some point.

I probably will regret having tattoo's done when i get to my 50's/60's but thats a long time for me yet so it doesnt really cross my mind, i'll deal with it when it comes the time. but i know that dilema, and it can be a bitch

Mike at Skin Graffitti did my bulldog one and thats excellent, but his understudy (this was 10 years ago) did my Swindon Town one which wasnt as good as Mikes one IMO.

As stated above...totally ignore the one in Gorse Hill hes crap and overly expensive for them, I had 3 mates go there and none have been happy witht he results.

Me and the missus are having engagement tattoos done in the next few weeks, we have a good one down her ein Chard but a bit far for a day trip Sonic, unless you want to pop in for tea after mate :)

Have to say I got mine done in Gorse Hill and didn't have any problems at all, but then again it was just a simple bit of lettering and not a really artistic design which would've been more difficult.

I stand corrected :) I think what pissed me off a bit was that not long after he opened I went in and picked a design off the wall that was £50 and he said I cant do that for £50 I will do it for £70, I said fuck off, (this was before any of my mates went in).

But if you can recommend him Sam then cool, I withdraw my statement :)

Post by: Samdy Gray on Sunday, August 17, 2008, 17:14:47
Yeah, as I say, if it's just some lettering and you provide your own design that he can trace then I don't see there being any problems.

Don't know what he's like when it comes to design, colouring and blending though.

There is a lad who goes to watch Town who has the club badge tattooed on his skull. Not the current design though, the old one. Last time I saw him he was growing his hair long.

On the subject of club badge, there was a rather indignant letter in the Adver yesterday saying how the current badge is wrong and also saying that fans at Doncaster and Crewe probably laugh at us.  :(

Jimmy Mack. He got it done a week before they announced the badge was changing.

KOI TATTOO - Probably surprising to many westerners is the large of amount of ancient myth that surrounds these beautiful fish in the Orient and their elevated status there.   Generally known here as the brightly colored fish that are common in public ponds and fountains, carp (koi is Japanese for carp) can be found in colors that include white, yellow, gold, a deep orange, and some are even calico-colored.  Particularly beautiful specimens have been known to fetch prices in excess of half-a-million dollars from private collectors who specialize in their breeding and showing.  However, the koi is more than just a colorful and collectible fish.  It is also one of the most popular and beautiful of Japanese tattoo symbols – a beauty which belies its symbolic meaning.  Although Chinese in origin, the carp is now widely celebrated in Japan, particularly for its manly qualities.  It is said to climb waterfalls bravely, and, if caught, it lies upon the cutting board awaiting the knife without a quiver, not unlike a samurai (warrior) facing a sword.  This theme dates back to ancient China, where a legend tells of how any koi that succeeded in climbing the falls at a point called Dragon Gate (on the Yellow River) would be transformed into a dragon.  Based on that legend, it became a symbol of worldly aspiration and advancement.  Eventually, the stoic fish came to be associated with so many masculine and positive qualities that it was appropriated for the annual Boys' Day Festival in Japan where even today colorful, streaming koi flags are traditionally displayed for each son in the family.  In tattoo imagery, especially in combination with flowing water, it symbolizes much the same:  courage, the ability to attain high goals, and overcoming life's difficulties.

Its apparently also meant to bring good luck (so a friend told me a while back)

people have asked me if my tattoo hurt. i couldn't say yes or no. it's a strange feeling and sometimes it's quite pleasurable. The only bit which hurt on mine was when it went near the collar bone. Skin is very very this there so made me jump a bit.

the other thing that bothers me is the aftercare - i know that the tattooist will give me plenty of advice, but what can go wrong? how tender will the skin be? if i have it done on my wrist/forearm then it's obviously in a place where i'm bound to knock it on stuff...

Dont get tattoo'd on the wrist, it wont take properly. as long as you lookafter it it will be fine, use something called bepanphen (sp) its nappy rash cream but heals the tattoo very well, try and stay away from tattooists own brands "natural" tatto healers as they can fade the tattoo.
if its something small it shuoldnt take too long to heal, wash it with warn soapy water dab it dry, apply a thin layer of cream and repeat 2 times a day untilll healed.

i'm less bothered about the pain than it being irritating afterwards :D

noted about the wrist. although i can't get it done on my right wrist cos of scars and my left wrist cos that's where i wear a watch anyway...i guess it'll be the forearm.
