Has Maurice sorted out our away form? Will Macca make an impact? Will Byrne be dementedly dancing around on the touchline? All will be revealed...................... Post by: Peter Venkman on Saturday, August 16, 2008, 13:28:42 would have preferred to see Joyce on the bench rather than Peacock, but I suppose that's to be expected. Yeah Joyce seems to be in a nice vein of form whereas Peacock doesnt, I think that MM has gone with a tad more experience being a local derby and away game and The Cock can play in midfield as well if needed. Post by: Power to people on Saturday, August 16, 2008, 16:19:21 We need to learn how to play ugly and beat teams at their own game I think, it is a case of when you can play football all well and good but learn when you can't.
I hope that it isn't going to be when Macnamee is on form so are we and when he isn't we are not We had most of the possetion by the sounds of it but got caught out by 2 real sucker punches and if we are to do anything this season we have to learn and learn quickly how to grind out a result and close out games. But it is only 2 league games in so no need to be despondent, the signs are there that we COULD have a good season with the type of football we are trying to play. Title: Re: cheltnumb V Swindon Matchday Thread. Post by: STFC_Gazzza on Saturday, August 16, 2008, 16:21:02 fuck me there are some pessimistic bastards.

Post by: adje on Saturday, August 16, 2008, 16:40:44 I will remain pessimistic as long as Aljofree and Morrison are the central defensive pairing-I will be optimistic when Ifil and Kanyuka are fit
Title: Re: cheltnumb V Swindon Matchday Thread. Post by: Batch on Saturday, August 16, 2008, 17:22:53 Here is how I saw it:
Defensively we look a bit dodgy. Casal and Morrison are learning, Aljofree was poor today. We had enough chances to win but converted 0 of them. This was a mix of a couple of good saves from Higgs and our own final ball letting us down. McNamee didn't see a lot of the ball, but was more in it after half time. We were pretty even first half, had a good spell of pressure in the second half but didn't capitalise. After they scored we were crap. Then they went down to 10. Then they scored again. And we were still crap. The centre midfield pairing can play, but is lacking any bight. I hope Easton can add this. Cox didn't have his best game up front. We need Paynter fit and Corr ready to fight for a place to assist him. All in all it wasn't a great performance! Very dissjointed and whilst Cheltenham were flattered by the 2-0 score they probably deserved it. But it's not all doom and gloom. Only 2 clubs have a 100% record. We are above Leeds for instance. Lets put it behind us and get 3 points Saturday. Oh, and there was some moaning fuck that went and on at Nalis and Malpas for not replacing him for the last 15 minutes. I think unfortunately that a number of our 'fans' are in waiting with the Malpas knives sharpened :( Title: Re: cheltnumb V Swindon Matchday Thread. Post by: Reg Smeeton on Saturday, August 16, 2008, 17:50:30 I think unfortunately that a number of our 'fans' are in waiting with the Malpas knives sharpened :( Bound to happen...on the whole Town fans don't expect too much, but losing to Cheltnum is never a good idea...I think we know they'll struggle this season and fair play to them for managing to stay at this level, but MM has had a close season to sort out a squad with the obvious aim of improving the away form. On this evidence it hasn't happened. Title: Re: cheltnumb V Swindon Matchday Thread. Post by: Uncle Albert on Saturday, August 16, 2008, 18:00:07 defence is a shambles. Ifil and kanyuka the way forward. We just concede soft goals and it needs changing soon.

Post by: Reg Smeeton on Saturday, August 16, 2008, 18:13:35 glad i went and played golf instead.fucking shit result and lost a few bob today becasue of it:(. maybe we aint as good as we thought we were? The test was always going to be improved away form....this wasn't Oldham on a wet Wednesday in Feb. Conditions suited, good away support, and modest opposition. To lose 2-0, the seconfd coming v 10 men....really is a poor effort. We had so many corners and free kicks around the box, but were completely inept in delivery....I don't think Higgs was tested once. More of the same and the hacks who had us down as relegation material, want be looking so stupid. Title: Re: cheltnumb V Swindon Matchday Thread. Title: Re: cheltnumb V Swindon Matchday Thread. Post by: Panda Paws on Saturday, August 16, 2008, 18:17:27 I seem to be a lone voice, but have been saying for a while Phil Smith needs to come in. I wasn't at today's game ... but on Tuesday's evidence, Brez did go walkabouts on more than one occasion. He still seems a shadow of the player he once was. Title: Re: cheltnumb V Swindon Matchday Thread. Post by: pauld on Saturday, August 16, 2008, 18:19:04 I'd have to agree with Batch. If we'd have taken our chances first half and first part of second half we'd have had the game sewn up. But virtually everyone had a bad day at the office, especially the back line who weren't shocking individually but just didn't perform as a cohesive unit. There were far too many echoes of last season in the outplaying a poor side but not finishing them off and in the dip in form away from home. But to take the positives, McNamee had a pretty good game - a couple more like that on the road and hopefully we'll hear the end of the "Macca can't do it away". And it's only the first away game of the season - if we have three or four of the next away games like that, I'll start to worry, but as it is could just be a blip. Far too soon to be drawing conclusions one way or the other.
Title: Re: cheltnumb V Swindon Matchday Thread. Post by: Arriba on Saturday, August 16, 2008, 18:22:50 more like a couple more like that and he will be gone.

Post by: lambourn red on Saturday, August 16, 2008, 18:40:06 How we never scored is beyond me their goalkeeper always seems to have a blinder against us. We learnt a couple of things we actually probably knew,Morrison and Aljofree should only be played together as a last resort, Easton should come in for Timlin. Also Brezovan is very dodgy on crosses.
The performance was not too bad just did not convert all ouir chances but came away more frustrated than depressed. Title: Re: cheltnumb V Swindon Matchday Thread. Title: Re: cheltnumb V Swindon Matchday Thread. Post by: Luci on Saturday, August 16, 2008, 18:48:17 I defended Aljofree the other day but won't be anymore. Was dreadful today. Thought JP was pretty shit too. I fancy we need to put the wind up his sails a bit in subbing him and giving him some real competition for his place. His attitude also leaves a lot to be desired.
What became apparent today was that we really missed Paynter when he went off. Peacock just didn't do the trick today. I think Paynter is under appreciated and I hope the fans now realise what an important part of our squad he is. I felt sorry for Marshall being brought on in such a bad climate however he did his best and thats all we can ask for. Although he wasn't on long, he is very quick and does have skill however his first touch needs improvement. The lads got passion, enthusiasm and Im pretty sure we can rely on him to work hard and improve his game. Id like to see more of him as theres something there. Nalis was off the boil IMO today and we just didnt link up well as a team. Hopefully it was just a bad day at the office. I have to admit I left today feeling totally p*ssed off, let down and angry at the performance. If we played well and lost it wouldnt have bothered me as much but the fact we didn't annoyed me. Im hoping we see some improvement v Colchester. Title: Re: cheltnumb V Swindon Matchday Thread. Away to Cheltenham really should be a game we're capable of winning - Oldham win at Leeds and we lose to a team who will go down - not a good away start. Title: Re: cheltnumb V Swindon Matchday Thread. Post by: chalkies_shorts on Saturday, August 16, 2008, 19:50:23 Well I still can't understand how we lost. I thuoght we rodgered them in the first half and rodgered them even more for the first 20 in the second. We should have been 3 up before they scored. The game should have been dead and buried. This is despite Aljofree being complete wank. He gives no help to Morrison who wasn't great today but had no help. Aljofreee is a fucking useless captain who doesn't even earn his place in the team and his header in the last minute was as complete wank. JPM needs to be shot - end of and moving him in the middle was a bad decision. Peacock was also absolute shit and its about time he put out of his misery and out of the squad. He's trading on history and Mr Nice Guy but doesn't cut the mustard any more. I'm a big fan of Brez but from where i was sat he should have taken both man and ball. At least let the bastard kmow you're there - his physical presence is pathetic for a big bloke.
Now the positives - Marshall looked pretty good when he came on. Nalies has some nice tuoghes but was off the pace today. Macca - every time he gets the ball I'm excited. I also thought Casal did Ok today. Cox never gave up as usual. This may sound harsh but we will not play many worse teams this season and if we're serious we need to pick up points at places like 'Nam. All in all, I'm pretty pissed off. Their stewards their responsibility. Write a letter, don't be aggressive just put your point across. You have to remember though they've only got your word for it so come across as aggresive and they'll assume their stewards made the right choice.

Some of my mates were in the Cheltenham end as season ticket holders and their verdicts were that Morrison was out of his depth and our number 6 was a poor captain. They were also quite amused when our right winger was put in centre mid despite being useless throughout. Anyway onto my summary can't argue with them to be honest, Aljofree and Morrison are an accident waiting to happen, both were dogshite today. When fit Ifil and Kanyuka must get a chance together as they'll intimidate the opposition as much as anything. Mr Mcgovern well I'll describe my opinions on him in the other thread but needless to say he has a chip on his shoulder and thinks he's better than he is. How he got put into centre mid in favour of Easton I'll never know. At full strength with Ifil, Paynter, Kanyuka etc I think we have a team but if we regularly play without them then I think we'll find it hard going. Title: Re: cheltnumb V Swindon Matchday Thread. Post by: swindonbob on Saturday, August 16, 2008, 20:44:28 Agree with most of the sentiments on here. Although our defence looked poor today, I just had one of those feelings after about 15-20 minutes that we were going to be unlucky today, and we were definately unlucky not to score (especially during the period between 50-60 minutes). I truely believe it was just "one of those days" so im not worrying too much.
Also agree about trying to get the ball to McNamee more. Everyone knows exactly what he can do, so get the ball to him as much as possible and steam into the box! I know its early in the season, but id really like to see Joyce coming on instead of Peacock when we take off a striker, as I truely believe he will have more of an impact than Peacock does. And come someone tell me the reason for the argy bargy down in the right hand corner? I saw all the fans swearing at the stewards, then some twat chucked a full bottle of coke onto the pitch but i couldnt see why. I think it may have had something to do with the disableds down the front but i cant be sure. Title: Re: cheltnumb V Swindon Matchday Thread. I think it may have had something to do with the disableds down the front but i cant be sure. I was right by this, so I'll go for it. Basically, one lady in a wheelchair couldn't see, which is understandable as they weren't on a raised area so all had a face full of metal barrier, so she rolled forwards a few feet so she could see over the top. Some heroic steward then decided to make her move backwards as it contrevened some health and safety rule, bravely ignoring the fact that the whole stand was stood up and had been for the past hour. Being as this chap had the misfortune of being both fat and ginger, it was perhaps not the best idea to draw attention to himself. But it's not all doom and gloom, if we had scored once during that 10 minute dominant spell we had after half time then the chances are that we would have got some kind of result today. Cheltenham scored against the run of play, it killed us, and spurred them on.
On to the next one. Title: Re: cheltnumb V Swindon Matchday Thread. Post by: DV on Sunday, August 17, 2008, 01:04:19 Right,
Firstly, I dont give a fuck that hes new has only been here a week and hasnt played in League One before but Casal has been shit. Cost us two goals again today. He tries to get infront of his man and gets turned. Every time he has his hands all over the striker and seems to always want to tuck close to the centre backs. Tranmere switched it and he well out of position and they scored and Cheltenhams right winger has half a fucking pitch to himself to score in and not a left back in sight....out of position again. Their second goal came eventually from a stupid free kick (give to us by the lino, to them by the ref) given away by Casal for having his hands all over Barry Hayles I think. Im not full back or football expert, but fucking hell back off and stand him up block his path show him outside away from goal. Keep goal side.... I know hes the only fit left back we've got but Jamie Vincent is better. Vincent is an expirenced head, he will call the line and you can also hear him comminicated sometihng no one else picks up when he isnt about and best of all he knows how to defend! I've heard all the same arguments about why Vincent is so shit the fact he hoofs it and cant pass it down the line, which is fair enough....but he can defend. Defenders main job is to defend and if a defender can defend well and play the ball about he isnt a League One defender, he's better than that. Jamie Vincent to me still has a place in this team and Casal has looked pretty shite so far. I'll give him 10 more games dont get me wrong but hes got to come Comminges good to make me change my mind on him. Midfield was out fought today because we had two ball players and no battler. We lacked and missed a Easton or Peacock in there today to do all the donkey work for Nalis or Timlin. Cheltenham won just about every second ball in midfield both on the floor and in the air. We lacked bit in there. Timlin and Nalis tried but didnt press play and break up as much play as Easton or Peacock would have. As for Lee Peacock, get him back in midfield he was worse then useless upfront and when he is upfront we turn into shit League Two hoofball team. Paynter going off effected us because he is a big over rated donkey who doesnt score goals ::) I have no idea how far Ifil, Vincent & Easton are from full fitness but at this moment in time id say our strongest 11 would be Brez Smith Ifil Aljofree Vincent JPM Easton Timlin McNamee Paynter Cox Title: Re: cheltnumb V Swindon Matchday Thread. Post by: Batch on Sunday, August 17, 2008, 08:15:44 Paynter going off effected us because he is a big over rated donkey who doesnt score goals ::) He was shit in pre-season. If he'd have played like that in the league games he'd have been less effective than Peacock ans thats what those comments were based on. Thankfully he has been superb since the season proper started. I agree with what you said, casal is a weak link right now and we have no fight in central midfield. I also found it hard work because they were wearing our kit. Were you the bloke behind me that was shouting at "Smith" to get the ball for a while, until he realised red #3 was a Cheltenham player. nah Title: Re: cheltnumb V Swindon Matchday Thread. Post by: Iffy's Onion Bhaji on Sunday, August 17, 2008, 08:37:47 That was truly wank. Really dissapointed with our display yesterday. Think DV sums it up well tbh. We could have done with Easton yesterday to battle and win balls. Casal was OK i didn't think he was that bad. What really dissapointed me was that if we had actually got the ball down and played a bit more we'd have won the game 2 or 3 nil. I thought both teams were poor but when it mattered we didn't show enough fight and bottle. At 10 against 11 we still flopped. In fact we got worse and our belief that we could still come back into it had gone.
Paynter going off was a huge blow and Peacock was absolute dog shite upfront. Can't wait till Corr's back because it would have been great to have him yesterday. We missed Ifil as well and with Morrison at CB we didn't look too good. All in all very dissapointing. Our away shite continues sadly. At home we look a different team. It needs sorting. I will not be making another away trip for a while. Possibly not even for the rest of the season if we keep playing like that on the road. Title: Re: cheltnumb V Swindon Matchday Thread. Post by: Panda Paws on Sunday, August 17, 2008, 11:33:33 Away from home is where we need to improve, and on yesterdays performance, it aint going to happen. As previously said, Paynter going off showed how important he is to the team, but more importantly, how important he is to Cox. We had nothing up top after he went off, with Cox having one real chance that be blazed over,
Brez, your 8'9" or something, come out and catch the bloody ball. We can't defend wide free kicks and corners for toffee, despite having all 11 players back. I'm sick of Aljofree. I was in the minority last year when saying that he was not good enough, and he aint improving is he? Morrison isn't good enough for league football yet, simple. We need one, possibly both but slightly risky, of Ifil and Kanyuka, or try Vincent with Ifil, he can't be as bad as Hasney! Nalis was not at the races todays, and my impartial mate who also happens to play football at quite a high level thought he was absolute gash, without knowing who he is or where he's come from. I tad harsh, but he wasn't as good as we all expect him to be, likewise Timlin. This aint going to be popular but, until we start improving away from home, I'd concentrate on not conceding and scrap our way to points. Play a narrow midfield with JPM, Nalis, Easton, Timlin. Stop conceding goals, double up on their wingers instead of leaving the left winger 3/4 up the pitch whilst they attack. Use Macnamee as an impact sub away. Oh, and we may have 6 strikers but only 2 are good enough for this level, unless Corr stops popping his shoulder out everytime he touches grass. Quality not Quantity! I was already let in and turned back to see what the problem was. Then the steward took my ticket too and said i was not allowed in too.It was a total joke.Went to complain to a copper and he said the steward was in the right and it was his right to refuse entry. My dad is 64 for fuck sake so of course he looks unsteady on his feet and if you have come from a pub you are going to smell of ale.Im still angry now.Any suggestion on how i should go about making an officia complaint.I could not believe how the police did not want to know. This is so wrong and i feel so let down for me and my poor dad. This happened with my dad, but at Swindon 7 years ago. He wrote to the Club and they just gave him another ticket to another game only if he reported to the office, they didn't even say sorry. He sent back his Club membership and hasn't returned since. Title: Re: cheltnumb V Swindon Matchday Thread. Post by: yeo on Sunday, August 17, 2008, 15:16:21 Is a bit sucky, poor old fella >:(
Title: Re: cheltnumb V Swindon Matchday Thread. Post by: alanmayes on Sunday, August 17, 2008, 15:25:57 The first rule of law with any defender is that they can do the basics of defending.I know it sounds
straightforward, but we need a unit who can be solid. It isn't always the best individuals who you can mold into this.Although a lot of us think that Iffil and Kanyuka are the answer, you must remember that they both lack concentration and get sloppy at times, even when they've had a good 80 mins of a game. We're missing the influence of Vincent.Limited player yes,but he knows how to defend. What is this obsession that the management have in moving JPM into central midfield? I can't think of any game when this has been done, that has resulted in us winning the game.I think he's put in the effort preseason and in the games this season,so i won't have a go at him.just they way that he's shifted around. It looks as if injuries have taken their toll with Peacock,as he's so pedestrian upfront these days, which is as shame.Nalis i think can be a good signing, but away from home, surely he needs to sit deep and to play the holding midfielder and protect the centre backs? He didn't do this yesterday and that headed miss was dreadful from a player of his experience. I'd suggest that this week, the management and coaching staff get to grips with the team shape and defined roles of the players. This could be a long season, especially away from home. |
