Right I have to get this off my chest....

Forgot my pass for work this morning, so comes in and says to the woman on security can I have a temp one as I forgot mine, and I got a massive sermon from her on how she is not supposed to give out temp badges and if other people in the building forget thiers they don't get a temp one and telling me not to forget it again, anmd saying I'll only get one becasue I'm IT otherwise I'd have to go without.

Who they fuck does she think she is talking to me in that way, she is a security guard employed by the company to unlock the doors and act as a receptionist, she is not my manager and has no fucking right to talk down to me as if she is god and her word is law...I'm sure if it was the MD she wouldn't tell him what a naughty boy he was and don't do it again.

I'm quite happy if she wants to explain to my manager why I'm not in work as she has sent oe back home to get my pass.

No, she is the security guard who's job it is to make sure that only the right people get access to areas of your business. Her job does not involve bailing out knobheads who forget the pass, you've made her job more difficult, and so she has every right to have a go at you.

Everyone forgets their badge from time to time, we're only humans, we make mistakes.  If you forgot your badge time after time then she'd have cause for complaint but not on the odd occasion.

Ah but she also clearly operates with some sort of hierarchy of "special people" who are above others - remember she told p2p he'd only get a pass because he worked in IT - so she's kind of hoist on her own petard. Or would be if he'd said any of this to her, instead of looking at his shoes, mumbling "thanks" and shuffling off to his desk before he really let rip. I'm curious though, what is it about "working in IT" that gives you such a god-like status in the eyes of such lesser mortals? It's never worked for me

I think that someone needs to chill out a bit, the security guard was doing the job that she is paid to do. you would be the first to moan if your security was breached . They do long hours for little pay so maybe you should think about that before you launch into her because YOU forgot YOUR pass.

Rubbish her job is to supply him with a temporary pass, not to give a verbal warning/telling off whatever.  That should be down to P2P's manager.  Not some third party security firm employee.

To be honest Ben I wouldn't expect to be "told off" by anyone at work, not a security guard, not my manager, no one, as I'm an adult.  But maybe that's just me.

If she had explained in a normal, polite manner, I don't think I'd mind, but if she was rude and bolshy as PtP suggests I think she's out of order.

Her job isn't "to supply him with temporary passes", infact "she is not supposed to give out temp badges and if other people in the building forget thiers they don't get a temp one", and she tells him "not to forget it again".

If P2p is upset because someone he considers so far below him pointed out part of his responsibilities (BRING SECURITY PASS - tricky one), then it's his attitude which is out of line, not hers.

The woman dosnt work for the same company as him and has no right to have a moan. Her "just doing her job" should have consituted giving him a temp pass and wishing him on his way politly.

If I was 'told off' like a naughty little boy then I wouldn't be happy, regardless of their position. Constructive criticism or even discipline (When appropriate) however then fair enough.

If he was acting as though she is inferior to him as his post suggests then I'd understand if she get a tad pissed off, I know that I'd likely bite.

My take on this:

She's got a job to do and she probably gets pissed off with being fucked about by people who think they're her superior purely because of the job she does.

If you look down on others and they get the chance to bring you down a peg or two, good for them.

I'm not suggesting that anyone on here is like that, but I fucking hate pompous cunts, who are up their own arse just because they've got (what they perceive as) a good job, or a bit of cash.

I was pissed of with the way I was spoken to, and 2 other people that heard it agreed with me as well, I merely came in the door and said I have forgotten my pass can I have a temp badge please (which is probably the 2nd time in about 8 years I've been here that I forgot it), I'm not saying she is below me, although she is smaller than me....

But it was more to the point of it is not her job to tell me off, her job is to man reception desk and deal with visitors, passes don't get checked, fine say to me can you try and remember it next time which is fine and I can accept that, but to be spoken to as if I was a naughtly little school boy is just not right,  talk to people the way you would like to be spoken to yourself.

And Mr D the reason IT get badges and no one else does is that we have to be able to get on and off the floors and without a badge we wouldn't be able to do much work as we'd be hammering on the door for someone to let us in all day (which is fine by me really as I'd prefer to earn money and not work)

Managed to miss your post p2p. You sound a bit more reasoned now, your initial rant did come across as a bit up yourself and I apologise if my reply (and the other ones to janaage's gay whiteknighting) came across a bit strong.

I still think that when you forget your pass she's within her rights to have words, and if you were at all acting like the tone of your first post entailed then fair play to her for knocking you down a bit.

The "talk to people the way you would like to be spoken to yourself" is an ace idea, but can you claim you've never been condescending to someone?

FWIW, my take on this, being used to having to show my pass to enter a secure working environment daily. The Security Guard is there to ensure people who are not entitled to access the secure area they protect don't. Therefore if you have forgot your pass, and can't provide any positive ID to prove you are who you say you are, tough. In my case, I need to show some form of photo ID (Passport, Driving Licence), and get someone in my office to vouch for me before they will issue me with a temporary pass. Bit of a shit when I arrive around 0730 on the latter score.

It is your personal responsibility to remember your ID. That said, if the guard in question was off-handed, then thats another story. Its fair to say some do take their duties a little too officiously, but that doesn't excuse poor manners.
