I'm pleased they got elected, because despite having the best case, it looked like their geography ie being in Scotland might be held against them.

I've been to Annan and indeed it is a fine part of the world....I recall with some affection a languid afternoon, spent throwing pebbles into the Solway Firth....from a small beach just outside the village.

Sharing  :doobie: with the bird I was with at the time, but too fucking cold for an al fresco.  8)

Reg.

How could Annan being located in Scotland hold them back for being elected into the Scottish FL.

Have I missed a joke, or has Reg done a typo?

When I read about tihis a while back, it looked despite having the best facilities Annan would lose because it's a bit isolated being right near England.

I could imagine the woad covered Picts of teh SFL, thinking being near England was almost like being in it.

Kofi's team is located in Dumfries & Galloway, so would be a bit of a trek for most teams.

Oh I misread it as being in Scotland as a country was a disadvantage. Not it's actual location within Scotland

Silly BR.

Ever since I was a kid, I've often puzzled how you get to be Secretary General of the UN, if you haven't got a pretty silly name or in the case of Kurt Waldheim, a dodgy Nazi past.

Even the first, the Brit, Gladwyn Jebb isn't a bog standard moniker.

Daddy for me was U Thant...how did peeps address him?  "Alright You?

For years I thought Trygve Lee  must be some sort of Korean, rather than  Norwegian as I eventually discovered.

Dag Hammarskjold  had a decent Viking ring to it and Perez de Cuellar, I suppose a bit too sensible....but Boutros Boutros Ghaly was a return to form....and present incumbent Ban Ki-moon shows promise.

Boutros Boutros Ghaly has to be right up there in the list of best names ever.

The final choice was between Annan in the "far south" or Cove in the north, either way divvie 3 sides would have had a journey and a half to get there.  Annan's only an hour south of Glasgow so it's not really the back of beyond.

Ban Ki-Moon is coming to town.

He sang this on tv when he was appointed...or Slivovice had addled my brain.

Are you sure you're not confusing this with Button Moon ?

Do the Moonies still have a place out at Stanton Fitzwarren?

No, I'm sure he sang it to the tune of Santa Claus is coming to town when appointed.  Of course, I may have been drunk.

I'm assuming that Annan is in the locality of Annandale Water, the second best motorway service area between Lancashire and Glasgow.  (The best service area, by the way, is at Tebay, Cumbria, maybe 50 miles to the south.)

Fitting that a team from the far south of Scotland has been replaced by another. I hope they don't get bankrolled by some wanker from Carlisle, only to be abandoned a few years later on.

Think that's a bit harsh on Mileson....Gretna were basically a village side playing in England.  They had a fantastic few seasons, they can easily return to being a village side, so they've not really lost anything and gained a lot.

I agree I don't think Mileson's the big baddy here, after all no one was complaining when the good Doctor's goals were firing Gretna to promotion up the leagues.  Perhaps the SPL should have refused them entry to the top division but I think lessons will have been made.

Don't think Annan will go the same way.

Still suprised that they didnt vote in one of the edinburgh teams or Prestonpans. But then again, this is the SFL we are talking about, not the Self Preservation League.

Edinburgh has already lost one lower league club in the last 15 years, Meadowbank Thistle (I know they relocated but still couldn't compete as an Edinburgh club) so why let Spartans or Edinburgh City in?  I think it's good that another Border (well D&G) club have been given an opportunity.

Dont get me wrong. Annan or Cove would have got my vote. There are already too many teams from the central belt.

I fancy buying Fort William FC and turning them into a massive team

How are Hearts & Hibs attendances these days? Could bringing in another Edinburgh team jeopardise fanbase etc.

I’m not being patronising towards those clubs or anything just pondering whether that could have been a factor.

On a side note I’m going to Easter Road in August to see them up against Rangers.

nah, a 3rd division team is never going to pull fans away from an SPhell team. Even if that team is owned by a mad russian submariner!

Around the mid teens at most matches Rich.  Don't really think a divvie 3 side would have much of an effect on Hibs or Hearts tbh.

Enjoy the match at ER!!  Not a bad ground nowadays.  Nor is Tynecastle to be fair.

Fair enough - I thought maybe low prices and intrigue could sway some fairweather fans.

I think it's a bit different up there mate, think it's much more of a social thing and a thing you're kinda born into too.

I suppose a few could become disheartened but I would imagine too many folk  would be tempted to go and watch Spartans just because they're in the league.  Why not go and watch them now?  They're still about!

Reading the newspapers today...seems that Annan feel Gretna were sustainable in the SFL but not the SPL. Annan just want to get a decent footing in the league.
