I'd say a pint for £3, a coke for £1.80 and crisps for 50p isn't out of the ordinary.

You had Stowfords that's probably the reason, normally expensive anyways..

We should have a TEF pitch and putt tournament.

Stowfords 2.90 in my local in Devizes, the Southgate. If you were shocked by those prices one can only assume you havne't been to a pub for years, or been exclusively to 'spoons.

Pubs are going out of business because of the smoking ban, Have to re-coup the losses. Hence why most pubs do food now.

I'm sure the smoking ban has impacted the traditional 'drinkers pub', but lets face it, most pubs have been doing food for years now.

On the subject of which, I've noticed that there are fewer genuine pubs doing genuine home cooked food, from scratch, as opposed to chucking pre-prepared food in the microwave and still charging you 10 quid + for a main course. I want ingenious, quality, well prepared fresh food when I eat out, however it seems to me its a case of maximise profit over quality.

And by the way, I'd much rather sit and eat in a nice no-smoking pub than have 3 fat geezers smoking cigars next to me while I'm trying to eat (which happened to me earlier this week in Greece).

If I want a meal i'll go to a decent restaurant, thats what they were invented for!!!

A pub is a place to get drunk, have a laugh with the lads and flirt with girls.

Where I was is a vast council estate between Newport and Cwmbran, like Parks and Penhill combined in the middle of nowhere...it has a police station, the like of which I've only ever seen in belfast in the UK.

Oxford is distinctly working class aside from the University-related stuff though, tipified by every area other than the city centre.

I've paid £13 for a Martini.  In my defence I was a bit drunk and got carried away with the experience while eating at Claridges.  very la dee da.

It seems beer prices are beginning to converge around £3 a pint pretty much everywhere.  There was a time not too long ago it cost that in Hotels and London but about £2 in pubs everywhere else (bar Wetherspoons).  I know if we go back to Reg's yoof it would have been a matter of pence a pint.  It'll only take a few places to begin charging closer to £4 and they'll all follow.

On an earlier point, don't Supermarkets run almost at a loss on alcohol?  It's one of those products that gets people in to buy other stuff.  Wine costs £3 minimum to bottle, ship and stock, even for the cheapest stuff, so they artifically keep prices down, hence the growing pressure on them to remove deals.
