Title: Play-Offs
Post by: axs on Friday, May 9, 2008, 19:33:48
started tonight, Southend vs Donny, lots to report so far, there have been some attacking throw ins and goal kicks and Southend have had the average-sized Lion's share of possession.

BRISTOL CITY
Current form

Picked up just one win in five, and two in 11.

Lost the last four away from home in all competitions, and not won in six away from Ashton Gate.

COME ON PALACE!

Pretty standard first leg. It's not until the second that it gets good - yet I'm still watching... In fact since I've subscribed to SkySports every game has been shite - yet I still watch  :|

Its quite instructive to consider these two sides, both did teh double over us last season,  but neither was particularly impressive at the CG, I didn't see the away games, but the scores were close.

Neither side has a notable goalscorer, or individual players who seem much coveted by other clubs....both have had long spells being in the doldrums of lower league football.  Kind of shows the depths to which we've sunk that we can't really compete with these.

We played ok but had a weak team out due to injuries and suspensions. Got unlucky conceding a pretty decent late goal.

The hats made up for it though!

To me it shows how weak we were mentally this season. I know there was a lot of unsettling shit behind the scenes. But weve got to have better focus and determination next season. We played only in patches.

We lost 3-0 at Carlisle, with an injury ravaged squad. But the same could be said of them. I didnt rate them at all.

What if they do a Reading though.

I was on my way to 5 a side on Wednesday night when a lad who is the son of one of my mum's old friends asked if I supported Swindon (I was wearing a Swindon shirt).

"Of course", I says. He then asked if I liked Reading. "I fucking hate them" says I.

I got a bitter "fuck you then" in retort.

I doubt the cunt has ever been to Reading. I'd hate an extra load of plastic cunts jumping on another bandwagon. Where were you when they were shit?

I don't think they would though. Reading steamed to the Premiership with that crazy unbeaten run of something like 33 games.

Bristol City looked odds on for that 2nd automatic spot until the last few months of the season.

1-2 in the end. Carlisle very unlucky after having a 2-0 lead to the 95th minute...... Carlisle's keeper Westwood was phenominal. Leeds midfield was non-existent and the defence was shocking. Carlisle sat back for most of the game defending but fair play to them!

I'm 50/50 really, half of me wants them to go up as then it leaves only crapish teams (similar to us) in the league but the other half of me wants to laugh at them not going up and I also quite fancy another away day at Elland Road.  So not bothered either way.

My best mate at school did the opposite. He used to always wear Man U shirts and we used to give him stick as to why he supported Man U. So one year he decided to change his allegiance and picked Reading as his new team. To be fair they were in the bottom league and was when they played at Elm Park and he went to some of their games. We went down to the Majeski when they beat us 2-0. Hopefully after them going down this season and us hopefully gradually on the rise we'll be resuming our trips to Reading and Swindon games in future!

That's the thing though Bob's Orange, I don't really care about their team or their fans in general, just the ones supporting them because they're 'local'.

It's some kind of twisted justification, like the fan who says they support Manchester United because their great uncle supported them, even though they only met their great uncle once or twice. Just admit you support them because they win stuff and I'll leave you alone you glory seeking chump.

City and Hull it looks like then. Any of them can win. Who'd have thought that both of them would be 90 minutes away from the Prem just a few years back? I just hope that if City do win then people don't join the plastic bandwagon ala Reading.

I barely ever see a City shirt in Swindon but when I do I give them a nasty glare    If they go up and I start seeing them I shall not be pleased

Yeah we'll see them stupid Reading shirts swapped for City ones no doubt. Fucking plastic cunts

The only positive to come out the game is that it proves if we sort it out off the pitch, there is no reason why we can't have the odd season of being competitive in the Championship. Is not expectation of doing so.

God I hope City get dicked at Wembley. You can see they aren't Prem quality and so I'd fully expect them to come back down, but a whole year of that gloating and the HTV coverage of it would be unbareable.

You have got to feel sorry for Rich Pullen.

Their 'region' extends as far as Purton, it seems.

Not sure I fully with all the 'plastic' comments.  There is nothing we would like more than a promotion, bigger crowds, a higher standard of football, higher profile games and more (and better) press coverage.  That's what Bristol City and Reading have over us at the moment.

If we go up and we attract a few more fair-weather fans, would that make us plastic too?  I'd say we're long over due a slice of plasticity ourselves.  I'd take what Reading have achieved any day...just so long as we don't have to play on a retail park next to B&Q like they do.

I think if City get promoted they will do worse than Derby, although I suspect Stoke will run them close, neither have the big pot's of money that is needed to survive or have had the resources to stregthen to such an degree.

Going on last night City looked quite handy going forward but was a bit panicky when it came to defending....I think Hull are stronger

Team's who went up in 2006/2007:

1 Sunderland           46 15 4 4 38 18 12 3 8 38 29 29 88
2 Birmingham City    46 15 5 3 37 18 11 3 9 30 24 25 86
3 Derby County (P)  46 13 6 4 33 19 12 3 8 29 27 16 84

Team's who went up/in play-offs in 2007/2008:

1 West Brom       46 12  8 3 51 27 11 4 8  37 28 33 81
2 Stoke               46 12  7 4 36 27  9  9 5  33 28 14 79
3 Hull                   46 13 7 3 43 19  8  5 10 22 28 18 75
4 Bristol City        46 13 7 3 33 20  7  7 9  21 33  1   74

City's form this season is about the same as Derby's before they went up, Derby actually even had a better goal difference. If City go up they'll be humiliated.

Its not about how much they have though its about who they can attract and that is why I think City will definitely struggle next year if they get into the premiership, most domestic players let alone recognised foreign players would more than likely turn down the opportunity to join City even if in the premiership.

Yeah that’s fair enough but stoke, westbrom fulham(reported only 8m to spend) wigan will have the same issues

The difference is that Derby had no intention of staying up this year and rolled over and if Jewell wanted to he could of signed players in January but decided better.

If they go up I have a feeling we may be surprised unfortunatly

Despite my earlier City-bashing, I have to admit that is my main fear. If they were to go up, get a few decent players in and survive the drop for a season I'm not sure I could bring myself to watch Match of the Day any more!

If they get past the mighty Hull (or Watford, you never know!) then there's always a chance they could do what we, Leicester and others did and financially ruin themselves though! Always look on the bright side!

Disagree as I feel all of the above Stoke aside could offer higher salary and teams like Fulham have the advantage of being established in the premiership for last few years and have a manager with a good reputation home and abroad, same could be said of Wigan both established and good manager.  West Brom are a yo yo team who go up and down but any player would feel more confident they have the resources and the squad already to mount a serious bid for survival next season.  I have no worries at all if City go up they will come straight back down.

The thought of either Hull or Bristol City in the Premier league just makes me feel weird.

The first time I ever came across Hull City in football was when we beat them 3-0 in 1996. They were relegated to the third division that season and stayed there for 8 years. In 04/05 we murdered them at the CG and only a few years later look at them. Same with City really, pretty much a third tier team and now within a hour and a bit of top flight football.

Would like to Hull to win for obvious reasons, plus I know a few City Hull fans and would be happy for them. I went up to the KC to experience their promotion from L1 and the fans were absolutely amazing, probably the best I've ever seen at an away game.
