Title: The Credit Crunch
Post by: Don Rogers Shop on Friday, May 9, 2008, 11:05:07
So is anyone feeling the pinch at the moment? I personally think the media (Daily Mail) should be ashamed of the way they have scared people over the last 10 months

10 months, they've been scaring people for decades.

Serious answer, if the brown stuff is about to hit the fan it'll be a while before we know the extent. House repossession orders up 17% this quater though, which can't be good.

I think the brown stuff has already hit the fan Batch and think we are as low as it will go.Regarding the Repossession orders thats a bit of a wrong figure over the last 2 years we have seen a 25% increase in property purchase which will always lead to higher repo rates also alot of those repossessed are likely to be buy to let propertys.

Still good over here we haven’t seen any real shift on the property front largely due to a severe lack of anything close to affordable housing and banks still dishing out 100% mortgages while the rental market is madder than an Arab on gin.

As others have said Petrol and as a result flights and transport are the only noticeable killer at present.  Local airline went tits up today and their routes have been swallowed up by FlyBe leaving no competition to a lot of destinations.

Diesel is too expensive. £53 to fill up when it used to be £30 odd.
Food shop has gone from £70 to over a £100 for the same amount of food.

Absolutely shocking!

In short no! In long no

Ive been doing my job for 5 years, the first four years I had two proeprties repossesed (not me) or sold each year

The last year only 1.

The cost of petrol is expensive but the taxation is more

This is mainly media led

Loads of the work I do involves national housebuilders and they're laying people off everywhere, Crest Nicholson got rid off 50 buying staff over the last 2 weeks.

I don't think it's all media driven, some industries are really taking a hammering.

Borrowing is so high most people will barely notice.

That is until their home gets repossessed:

Yes, I am, trying to pay a hefty mortgage, live in 2 places at once and affording petrol is crippling me.  Along with the hefty vets bill I've still got left to pay  :(

The figure for repossessions in 2004 - 8,000
The figure for repossessions in the last year - 45,000

I would say the credit crunch is hitting pretty hard and will get a lot worse in the next 12 months.

The general day to day bills:

Fuel has gone up 20% in 8 months
Elec, Water, Gas over 20% increase in the last year
Food seems to go up every week, but over 15% in the last six months
Council Tax up 5%

For couples with high mortgages or just gettng on the property ladder or with young children, well it must be bloody hard at the moment.

I think with the price of fuel rising rapidy that is hitting people, and then you have the people that are coming out of fixed term mortgages having to sort that out and realising how much more they will have to pay.

Then you add in that the cost of food & energy (gas / elec) has risen dramtically, you can really see some young couples struggling.

And don't forgot the 10p tax rate as well that will hit some low paid people as well.

It all seems to come at once.

I'm, lucky in a sense that myself and the mrs have ended up with half decent pay rises this year (her's through promotion) so that is going to help us out with the added cost's, but I'm sure a lot of ordinary folk will start to feel the pinch within the next 6 months.

Ohh and cheer up Birdy there's always Manchester Rd if you need to earn a few extra pounds   :soapy tit wank:  :soapy tit wank:

I'm hoping *touch wood* that my move onto the property ladder was timed pretty well.

I got my fixed rate just before they went sky high, I've had a few payrises since which has bascially meant my pay's just kept up with the high increases in fuel and food bills and now my fixed rate is up next March when the mortgage market should have settled down again. Looking around currently, I'd still be able to get a similar deal to what I'm on now (about £10 a month extra).

Thank fuck we got a 5 year fixed rate about 14 months ago when we nearly quadroupled that size of our mortgage to buy the new place.

And thank christ the Mrs has got two promotions and earns about 10k more now than she did when we took the thing out. Then budget would have been a bit tight without that and we'd have been living a bit hand to mouth.

Mind you we still didn't borrow anything like what the BS was prepared to lend back than. Fuck knows how people afford to eat if they go up to the limits.

Cost of a barrel of oil keeps going up and up. This is passed on by the petrol companies, taxed to shit by the government who then add VAT afterwards for good measure.

The constantly increasing price of petrol has nothing, well, little to do with the government. The price of oil is rising dramatically and the oil companies are just simply taling advantage and exploiting the situation. The price of oil goes up by 5%, they increase prices by 7%. Nobody notices their scheme, as we just put it down to rising costs until the end of the year when they are paying themselves £X million bonuses.

 :(

The oil price is mostly to do with something called Peak Oil (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Peak_oil). Put basically, there is only a finite amount of oil available, and once oil producers reach maximum capacity (as they either have, or are about to) then available supply will be in decline, and obviously price goes up.

On top of this you've also got developing countries like China and India increasing their own demand significantly, and pushing prices up further.

But the good news is that it's nice outside.
