We "The British", along with some other countries call it Burma because the current Burmese government, which changed the name to Myanmar, is not recognised as a legit government.

And no Samdy we didn't get any of it in Bangkok, although there was a "Heads up" in advance cos' they wheren't too sure where it might go.

Al Jazeera (eng) call it Myanmar, and that's good enough for me, Myanmar it is!!

Horribly sad events though, whatever you call the place.

The change was recognised by the United Nations, and by countries such as France and Japan, but not by the United States and the UK.

A statement by the Foreign Office says: "Burma's democracy movement prefers the form 'Burma' because they do not accept the legitimacy of the unelected military regime to change the official name of the country. Internationally, both names are recognised."

Mark Farmener, of Burma Campaign UK, says: "Often you can tell where someone's sympathies lie if they use Burma or Myanmar. Myanmar is a kind of indicator of countries that are soft on the regime.

Actually seems to be more of a pro-democracy, or more so an anti Junta stance.

I have a Burmese friend and he likes that I call it Burma. I'll stick with Burma.

Have Burma/Myanmar ever returned all the Buddha heads that they stole from Thailand over the years?

That was naughty.

Raizing Ayutthya (The former capital) was a little naughty also.

I vaguely recollect some "Sunken" buddha statues towards the south, Phuket maybe, that are said to be cursed. The reason being that the Burmese army tried to steal those statues and then proceeded to die.

Thailand, Burma, Cambodia and Laos often have little squabbles about which temple belongs to who.

It was only a few of years ago that some Thai soap episode mentioned that Angkor Wat in Cambodia belongs to the Thai people.

As a result the Thai Embassy in Phnom Penh was set alight, and the kings of both countries had to issue public apologies to deal with the matter, along with Cambodia building a brand new Thai embassy.

They don't like their Bhuddas/temples to be messed about with in this part of the world.

which is kind of ironic since I doubt the buddah himself would be that bothered about it
