Title: Vietnam/Cambodia Post by: oxford_fan on Wednesday, April 30, 2008, 12:18:57 Am looking for some advice before my summer holidays.
About to book a flight to Bangkok with the intention of a short stop in Cambodia on the way to 'Nam. I've been to Thailand before so will only be going there because the flights are cheaper, will be travelling out of the country as soon as we get there. If anyone has been to Vietnam or Cambodia do you have any tips? I'll be going with the girlfriend so looking for recommendations of places to go/ things to do/ places to stay /what not to do/ etc. Is Laos worth a go? Should be abroad for over a month so plenty of time to explore, though it seems Vietnam is quite expansive so will take up the bulk. Cheers Title: Vietnam/Cambodia Post by: BANGKOK RED on Wednesday, April 30, 2008, 12:36:22 I reckon you'd be best off starting with a day or so in Khao San Road (Bangkok), from there you'll easily get a trip to Angkor Wat in Cambodia, I have never gotten around to it myself but I have heard that it is well worth a trip.
Phnom Penh is also worth a few days, it's a real eye opener with a mean nightlife. Cambodia is dead good for casinos as well if you are into that. Iv'e spent 1 night in Ho-Chi-Minh (Sp) city and found it OK, although I cant comment too much about after just one night. From there I went to Nha-Trang on the coast which was a great place. A huge beach with some stunning scenery and the locals where very very friendly and accommodating. Laos doesn't have much to offer to be honest, unless the opium dens in vientieng would be your cup of tea. The food is also outstanding and incredibly cheap, and Beer Laos is the best beer that I have tasted. Asides from their is little to see or do. How long are you going for? I'm not really sure of the best way to get from BKK to Cambodia, was thinking train maybe? Phnom Penh and Ho Chi Minh are on the list to visit. I'd love to play some poker in a real casino, tried in Morocco but they weren't doing texas hold em for a couple of hours and we were starving. I may give Laos a miss then as I've heard from a couple of other people that there's better destinations. Will be going for about 6 weeks. Title: Vietnam/Cambodia Post by: Zurich Red on Wednesday, April 30, 2008, 13:06:57 I went to Phnom Penh and Angkor Wat last year and would definitely recommend that you stop in both if you have time. For visiting Angkor Wat you'll be be based in Siem Reap which is a bit touristy, but has a few decent bars. Best to visit the temples early morning and/or late afternoon so as to avoid the heat and the crowds.
I went with a company called Gecko Travel and although I'd normally avoid orgainsed tours like the plague, it was quite useful in a place like Cambodia with limited infrastructure. There were only 5 of us in the group so pretty relaxed rather than being constantly herded around like schoolchildren, and the guides were all very knowledgable. Title: Vietnam/Cambodia Post by: BANGKOK RED on Wednesday, April 30, 2008, 13:18:52 I'd avoid the train to Cambodia like the plague as it is a long, boring and very uncomfortable journey, bus or coach would be best. Much faster, more comfortable and still cheap.
Your first port of call in Cambodia will likely be Poi-Pet, which is small town which revolves almost entirely around the many casinos there. I am fairly certain that there are travel agents there which take you to Angkor Wat or Phnom Penh, although you should check up first and maybe consider booking in Bangkok. It wouldn't all fit under my avatar, and I've met few Thai's who can say it all. Translated it means: "The city of angels, the great city, the eternal jewel city, the impregnable city of God Indra, the grand capital of the world endowed with nine precious gems, the happy city, abounding in an enormous Royal Palace that resembles the heavenly abode where reigns the reincarnated god, a city given by Indra and built by Vishnukam". And yes I did have to google that. Thankfully Thai's just call it "Krung Thep", which translates to "The city of angels" (Coincidentally). Everybody else just calls it Bangkok though Title: Vietnam/Cambodia Post by: donkey on Saturday, May 3, 2008, 12:37:53 Well, I did my best :)
