Title: Overdraft Charges Case Lost by Banks

Still got to wait until the 22nd of May to see if the banks appeal but it's looking rosey for a potential nice little bonus next month.  :beers:

Has anyone here successfully claimed any charges back or waiting for the test case to finish?  I didn’t have quite as much as I expected from my Uni days but £500 plus interest will do nicely either way.

On the face of it, it seems very good news.  In the long run I think we will all lose out, there will be no more free banking.  You will pay for every transaction you make.

...except the people who get money back from the banks can use that money to pay for their flash new bank accounts, whilst everyone else has to find the money from somewhere else!

We don't have free banking anyway those in their overdrafts aren't getting free banking plus it's such a competitive market that any bank that starts to levy charges will haemorrhage customers like a burst scrotum.

With the banks being in the mire anyway,i cant see the courts making them have to pay out all that money.

Course they will, the government need every trick they can think off to avert a recession, what better way than to skin the banks and give people money in their pockets?

be about another year with all the appeals that can be done. I think all this ruling states is that the OFT can set how much the charges should be.

My student bank account with HSBC probably got charged a bit, but at the time I didn't really want to know, just let it stack up as they let me go over my overdraft limit.

I have no idea how much I got charged over the years and they closed my account which I've paid off now. Is there an easy way to get hold of records about how much they charged me? I doubt it was that much to be honest.

Just ring them up and ask for copy statements, you can go back 6 years. Some may try to charge you a small fee although hsbc haven't been known to (so far)

Some banks charge up to £25 just for one statement, but you can get the whole lot using the Data Protection Act (Subject Access Request) for just £10.

If anyones looking to do this I'd use the steps on Martins Money, they have free templates for letters for claiming back charges and also loads of Q and A on potential issues.  Just makes it a bit easier.
