Why would they make it up?!

Good solid performance today, and Cox should have had a hat-trick really. When he was clean through he bottled it, but for his disallowed goal I am sure there was a defender on the line playing him onside?!

A win that is most welcome  :D Good performance today. Oldham looked average at best and we looked a lot better going forward. McNamee was superb again. His crosses were just brilliant. Great pass for the second goal as well. Pleased for Cox. He missed a sitter in the first half and can't have done his confidence good with that but he got a nice finish for his first and a better one for his second. Deserves that as well. Above all i am pleased for Malpas. He's taken a lot of stick this week and to get a good result like this will make him breath a little easier tonight.

Excellent second half. Not too bad a first half too really, McNamee really took the piss out of them and put some good crosses in which we didn't get on the end of.

By contrast Oldham only had 1 shot.

Well done Town

Basically the last man doesnt count as being able to play someone onside....in most cases the keeper is the last man......hence why if your past the last defender but infront of the keeper your offside.

In a goal mouth scramble, if there is one person on the line....but the striker is behind the goal keeper....then the defender is the last last man and therefore doesnt play the striker onside

make sense  :?

Also, I thought that the defender on the line stopped the ball, then Cox swooped in to slot it home, hence me wondering why he was given offside.

But I am willing to accept that I may have that entirely incorrect.

macnamee mom and mcgovern was excellent too.nice to see coxy get a couple(second goal was ace!)

That wasn't too much different from most of our last performances, but today we took our chances. And i dont think the fact we kept a clean sheet with the return of vincenté was much of a coincidence. Very good performance, and more like that should see us build well for next season

I did think that, but didnt Vincent play at Tranmere?

Secondly, our defence was helped by the awful Oldham attack. Their first choice pairing of Hughes and Davies are out injured.

Just got back-only saw the second half-bastard M4!they made me pay full whack to get in at 20 to 4!quality finishing from Cox but what a move for the third goal.McNamee is a class act and his blossoming surely owes something to the manager who has obviously worked hard on him since he arrived.Coming out at the end,I swear some people were disappointed that we won.Heard someone say "trouble is ,keeps Malpas in a job!"What can you do? I thought Timlin and Easton looked a useful combo in the middle of midfield and Jack Smith had another solid game(half!)Vincent looked a bit dodgy though.

McNamee has always been quality, just needed a few games to get his fitness, Malpas hasnt made McNamee the player he is, Watford did

Didnt say he wasn't quality-just saying he's improved since he first arrived and that may be in some part down to the manager. But I know you are strongly anti-Malpas so I dont expect you to give him any credit-but,hey,that's your opinion

Title: The non-premature (much) Official Match Day Thread vs Oldham
Post by: JPC82 on Saturday, April 5, 2008, 19:54:34
i am anti Malpas for these reasons:

1. He took the job accepting the backroom staff here, he couldnt believe his luck getting this job, any manager with a ounce of success bring his own staff in because they have been sucessful together in the past, as we know Malpas has had no sucess.

2. He hasnt brought in any of his own players, McNamee and Kanyuka were Sturrocks targets, Cox was here under Sturrock already, as was Timlin and Malpas openly admitted as part as the McNamee deal Watford said we had to take Ashikodi as he needs games, when the fuck as any half decent manager took a player he didnt even want!!

3. Plays players out of positions too much, finally today McGovern goes back to the right, Easton in the middle a Right footed right back and a left footed left back, hey presto a balanced team and a win!

there is no escaping the fact we have a good bunch of players here, they played well under Sturrock but not under Malpas, that has to be down to how the manager wants them to play, he spouts this shit bout being unlucky all the time, 1 game being unlucky to lose i can accept, 2 games ok fair enought, but 1 win in 10 games was not good enough, even today first half was poor, second half was alot better tho

2 decent second half performances out of 2-perhaps Malpas' team talks aren't so bad after all.

i am anti Malpas for these reasons:

1. I get the feeling Fitton/Malpas did not want too much change too quickly and rightly so. See what happens next season. Malpas has already started bringing in his own staff (scouts) so he is bringing staff with him.

2. Timlin may have been here under Sturrock but how the hell was Malpas supposed to know how well he performed? Byrne wasn't Sturrock's assistant then either so I think that is a false argument. It does appear that McNamee/Kanyuka weren't Malpas' doing but at least he saw they (well McNamee, dunno about kanyuka yet) would be good acquisitions and had the brain to go through with the deals. McNamee has been our best player since Malpas' arrival - that speaks volumes imo. Also, if Malpas didn't sign Cox, with the money there to do it, most of the fans would have been disappointed, would you not agree?

3. Playing people out of position has been a shortfall in this team. However, you can argue with the likes of Peacock and Roberts, it's worked out in the past for Sturrock. It has sort of worked some games and not others. Hopefully it's Malpas testing things out.

I think the last point is your only valid one. The rest of your arguments are almost non-sensical. It's what makes the Malpas argument so frustrating, because people make these rediculous points just because they don't like him. For the record, I'm not yet sure of Malpas, his tenure so far has left me unconvinced - but it's the football we have (not) played and the results which make me think this.

I really fail to see why this is such a big issue. He isn't playing, and he came in at a time when we were short of strikers. He hasn't stabbed anyone yet, so you can't say he's had a negative impact. Its just another stick to bash mighty maurice with

of course that wasnt the only reason, it was the interfeering, he had 3 players on huge wages stopping him  from bringing any1 in then the embargo

Those three huge wages didn't stop him bringin in Mcgovern, Paynter, Cox in. I dont think it was the massive wage bill, more to do with the uncertainty over the future of the club along with the fact he loves plymouth. The fact he had three players forced upon him at the start of the season was probably way down their in the reasons why he left

Taylor was given the opportunity to make it all OK, the TE sang - Taylor give us a wave - had he done so I think he would have got a good reception, but he didn't and the abuse continued.

Jack Smith appeared to be consoling him throughout the second half!!

asx is  right, despite being ginger. Second half today it was great fun being a Town fan again - our lot doing the business, them losing their way and us playing a part in tipping them over the edge (of sanity in Taylor's case). If you didn't go, you'll never fully appreciate the sheer joy you missed out on. Which is, of course, why we all keep going back even when it's shit. That nagging feeling of "well sure it's been crap for the last x games, but if I don't go today, this will be the one when we [Danny Dyer voice] smash the gwanny out of someone".

S'what it's all about.

On the subject of Malpas being in a 'no win' situation  (apart from today's win, but you know what I mean), as i was leaving the Arkells, the bloke alongside, with his young son, was moaning about Malpas substituting Cox thereby denying him a chance for a hat trick.

I pointed out, politely in the circumstances, that Cox had missed his best chance early on, to which the 10 year old (ish) piped up with "that's what I said to you Dad".  He shut up after that.

Good win, I'm very surprised but very pleased, must all be down to Malpas going to Dundee for two days and of course players who want/need a new contract for next season.
Form went completely out of the window yesterday - Swansea 1 Bournemouth 2, Brighton 2 Port Vale 3 and Swindon 3 Oldham 0.
No result is predictable at this stage in the season as yesterday showed.

Really good light entertainment. Oldham played as though they didn't really give a toss and we played a damn sight better than of late.

Bloody M4 (coming into Swindon... f@cking 3 hours sat twiddling my thumbs and burning my fuel in Reading... of all places) threatened to ruin my day as I missed the first 20 mins despite leaving London at 10am, then turned up as the sky opened and got soaked running across the car park in the rush to collect my tickets and not miss any action, then took my seat as Coxy had his goal disallowed... could the day have got any worse? Short answer, nope! We notched soon after, went on to score two more crackers, kept a clean sheet and I enjoyed a great evening out with the fajitas piled high and the beer flowing! Nearly wrote the car off driving home in the snow today but that's a different story!

That was a fucking great crack. Thoroughly enjoyed the game for so many reasons. First half was a little tame and uneventful, but that second 45 minutes made me realise why I enjoy football so much, and even more so watching STFC.

The first ten minutes of the second half, I swear I was watching a Swindon team from about 15 years ago. The football was free flowing and it looked like we could tear apart any team in the world, let alone Oldham. I'm still not convinced about our back 5 though.

Brez's kicking was OK in the main, although he had a couple of wobbles in that department; commanded his area well though.

Smith and Vincent did OK, although both had their moments of concern. I still worry about Jerel, too many silly little mistakes which on another day may have been punished by a better team; he looks short of confidence, but hopefully the win and clean sheet yesterday will help. Aljofree was just a bit meh. But between them they kept a clean sheet.

McNamee was different gravy. First time I'd seen him play and I thought he looked out of place to start with. But he grew in confidence as the game went on and as balls got played to his feet, and second half he took the piss out of their fullback and sent in half a dozen or more top quality crosses. Definitely MOM despite Coxy's brace.

I'm still concerned with JPM - he's like an bankrupt man's David Beckham and IMO a luxury player - why oh why can he not run with a football at his feet? Some good touches and passes (and of course he wound Taylor up a treat), but I still ain't convinced. There's a good player in there waiting to come out I'm sure, but will he ever show it in a Swindon shirt?

Taylor was a classic big time charlie. Good player, but as soon as he started getting abuse, he tried to silence it by taking on the whole of our team, and it didn't work, which wound him up even more. Funny as fuck.

Oh, and don't plan a date with Fred Elliot. "I'll be 45 minutes" - 3 Hours later we still hadn't seen sight or sound of him. Git   Rachel said you better make it up to her at the Port Vale game.......
