Title: 90's British Cult Telly
Post by: flammableBen on Wednesday, April 2, 2008, 00:11:09
And this thread is because I know I'm forgetting something...

Pre-90's you've got loads of stuff, going back through Doctor Who and Quatarmass and all that shizzle, but the 90's seems a bit of a bleak zone for random British telly.

You've got loads of brilliant American shows starting up in the later part of the decade. Brilliant stuff like the X-Files and Buffy, both of which are truly brilliant telly.

Britain seems to be lacking around that period. I suppose I'm talking more mid-late 90's. I don't really remember the early 90's as I was a bit young.

The one exception to this is Neverwhere (1996 I think), written by Neil Gaiman. Awesome, but it was only 6eps long, and they really fucked up on the filming quality. It does star Johnson from Peep Show, which adds bonus points.

But yeah, were there any good mid-late nineties good random British TV shows?

Knowing Me, Knowing You... with Alan Partridge and I'm Alan Partridge which I think just sneaks into the 90s or series one did.

Fist Of Fun was pretty good and the best piece of hangover TV ever - This Morning with Richard Not Judy.

I've got the first episode of Jonathan Creek on the go. Mint stuff. Although I think I've got a vague idea of how it was done.

There making a new Christmas Special for this year which could be fun, although I don't ever remember watching the later series so I don't know if it went down hill at all.

The last series wasn't as good but Jonathan Creek was generally excellent viewing.

I like programmes which are a bit original. Sure the concept of a crime mystery isn't new, but they made it different somehow.

Things like that beat the hell out of endless shows about lifestyle, buying properties and reality drivel without a sense of purpose other than to annoy me.

Headlong Dive

'This event takes place on a long jump track and pit. Rather than landing feet first, contestants jump headlong; if their feet touch the sand, their effort is a no-jump. Iggy Singh (GB) broke the world record with a majestic leap of 8m75, Judges later watched the footage and Singh was noticeably over the board and his father was standing in front of the wind gauge. Liam Collins wanting to prove a point then tore down the track and posted an 8.96 shattering Singhs record. Singh has never fully recovered from this. He now weaves baskets in corfu.'

dragged it out a bit didnt they.

They tagged the murder bit on the end for no real reason. I did get the room worked out eventually after changing my mind a few times....

I've spent the last month downloading all the previous 4 series, up yo 98% now. I think the earlier series were better than the latter ones.

Title: Re: 90's British Cult Telly
Post by: Simon Pieman on Thursday, January 1, 2009, 23:10:17
I didn't work out how the room worked at all. I did wonder why there was a separate bathroom next to an attic room though.

However I could see the affair thing from a mile off, something seemed up when he didn't want to sleep with that bird on the first night. Guess they put the extra stuff in there to make it a full two  hours.

Title: Re: 90's British Cult Telly
Post by: DV on Thursday, January 1, 2009, 23:33:29
It did seem filler. I didnt pick up on the affair till the church bit it all made sense them even if it was completely un-needed.

My first thought about the room was the bed drops when someones on it and it falls into a bit underneath but obviously we saw people on the bed and nothing happening. Then when he leant on the bed and the bugs fell down made me think the bed was too obvious which lead my thoughts to the bathroom....although i was expecting just a dugeon rather than a water tank.

I know this is a bumped thread as a result of the slightly lame JC special last night, but if you're still looking for 90's cult TV then, as a bit of a Dr Who fan, you might want to reacquaint yourself with Russell T's earlier work. Although they're nominally kids shows, both DARK SEASON and CENTURY FALLS were quite good from what I remember.

In the same ouvre (I'm assuming you're really interested in SF and fantasy stuff here) there was also a short lived and slightly shit revival of THE TOMORROW PEOPLE in the early 90's, and the Beeb did a mini series called INVASION EARTH, which I seem to remember looking quite expensive and not really hanging together too well, (I think it must have been some sort of co-production.

If you're prepared to look further afield then the 90's also saw the states producing, in addition to Next Gen, Babylon 5,and X-files and the underated Millenium, the fab DARK SKIES, and the kooky but funny EERIE INDIANA.

The last one might have slipped past you as it was basically a kids show, and only ran for one or maybe two seasons.

Returning to Ben's original post, I think the 1990s was the decade in which people here stopped running out the tired line that Americans couldn't do humour, lacked the capacity to understand irony etc.  The quality of comedy/drama produced in the States during that period was positively gilt-edged compared with that in the UK.

The traditional British sit-com pretty much died in the 1990s.  The only remaining example that I can think of (although there may be others) is Two Point Four Children.  but during the 1990s, the US was producing The Simpsons, Frasier, Seinfeld to name a few.  Even Friends, which does not appeal to everyone, could be fairly sophisticated when it wanted to be.

Title: Re: 90's British Cult Telly

Yeah some British sitcoms were rubbish, but I think that's because we had a move away from them and towards the sketch show or even the panel show.

I thought programmes such as Big Train and of course The Fast Show were quality, early Harry Enfield was pretty decent, but panel/quiz shows like Never Mind the Buzzcocks and Shooting Stars were able to provide us with equal amount of laughs. Let's not forget the Day Today or Brass Eye. These aren't sitcoms but they were good comedy shows.

There were also quite a few decent sitcoms as well - I'm Alan Partridge, Men Behaving Badly, Father Ted, I even enjoyed One Foot in the Grave when it was on. There's loads that people loved at the time which I thought were a bit naff, Vicar of Dibley and Ab Fab spring to mind.

Post by: janaage on Friday, January 2, 2009, 14:10:02
It was called Jam, on C4, in 2000 (d'oh).

Episode 1 highlights included

Homo Mum Dad
Two parents explain to their son's godfather that they are worried their son will become homosexual because he has a friend who is apparently gay. The father has been having sex with his son's friend to keep him distracted, while the mother has been keeping her son "interested in ladies" by having sex with him. The godfather is encouraged to pitch in and help.

Kilroy
Chris Morris announces it's "The day Kilroy lost his mind." There is then a series of manic shots of a lookalike of television presenter Robert Kilroy Silk going mad in a shopping mall, running around naked, shouting at passers-by, urinating on a shop window then falling asleep in a supermarket's freezer after attempting to wrestle a baby from its mother.

Coma
A doctor insists that one of his patients - who is obviously perfectly healthy - is in a coma, one that apparently has no symptoms. He then carries out a mercy killing on the heavily drugged patient.

Shrunken Car
An angry man walks down a street complaining that he recently took his car to a garage and, when he went to pick it up, the car was only four-foot-long, the mechanic insisting that that was how it was when it came in. The complaining man gets angrier and angrier as he explains this anecdote, swearing frequently and eventually attacking the pavement.

One Man Wedding
A forty-six-year-old man explains how he married himself out of fear of being a life-long bachelor. We see a shot of the wedding with the solitary newly-wed driving off on a honeymoon with himself.

Indian Restaurant
A brief scene shows two men in an Indian restaurant. Poppadoms are served. One man breaks the poppadoms for ease of consumption. His dinner partner becomes enraged, flings the table aside and starts beating up the other man, the violent assault accompanied by very relaxing music.

Thick People
An agency provides thick people for jobs they are good at, such as arguments, which they are apparently very good at winning "because they are too thick to realise they've lost."

Apartment Jumper
A suicidal man wants to kill himself but, instead of leaping from the top of the building, he opts to throw himself from the first-floor repeatedly in case he changed his mind half-way through.

Tree
Standing in a tree, a woman sings "Lovin' You" by Minnie Riperton while a crying man spanks her slowly with a spacehopper.

Infidel
A wife's fury at her husband having been caught apparently having sex with another woman is tempered when her husband tells her he was merely raping the woman.

Doc Knee
In the first of many sketches set in a general practitioner's office, a woman comes in to complain about her sore leg. The doctor goes to rub it and asks "Does this hurt" when in fact he's rubbing his own leg. He loses himself in the pleasure of stroking his thigh and asks the woman to leave. The visuals and audio of the sketch are slowed down, creating a very dreamy and even hypnotic effect

Jaaaam was even weirder. They turned up the druggy effects and slowed the sound down. It was a bit too much. The radio version - Blue Jam - had a brilliant one about parents no noticing about their son getting picked up by a nonce and killed. Hilarious.

The Big Train Wanking Office sketch is great - even in German. It's on the DVD somewhere.

Jam was great, if weird.  Morris seems a bit lost these days (though he is currently trying to get a comedy about british suicide bombers off the ground!)  That sketch is available on a cd of blue jam from warp records along with my own personal favourite, the suicide journalist.
