An assist yeah, but everything else he did was poor.  Countless times he lost possession.

I don't remember him being that fat when he was here?

I take a huge amount of pleasure in that.

I haven't read the shit forum rubbish.

But anyhoo, Grant Smith always strikes me as a Swindon version of Lee Sharpe. Although Shapre used to always confuse me because when he was playing for Manure they were sponsored by Sharpe or something. Bit mental. Greatest fall down the leagues ever though.

Never really King's cuppa was he? The fella only got into the side when AK's hand was forced - first by injuries, then by the fact he did the business (goals, assists). At the first sign of a below average performance, he was out on his ear again.

Who know's what to believe about his 'supposed' contract offer. I maintain though, if you leave any club for one of their direct rivals, you should expect nothing but dogs abuse upon your return. You know the sensitivities before you leave and shouldn't be surprised if it all gets a little prickly before, during of after the game.

When all is said and done, we've now got a far better option on our left flank... indeed, did we ever really miss him? Life moves on and we'll soon be moving onwards and upwards past the likes of your Carlisles and Smiths.

Que sera sera.

The Smith issue was something I know abit about and there were a number of reasons for him leaving as during his time here he lived in Cheltenham and was doing a part-time degree whilst playing for STFC at the Uni of Glos (where I was studying) hence the reason he went to City I imagine......he wanted to stay local and finish the course which is kindo of understandable. He was offered a reduced terms deal similar to what Howard was offered and he didn't get on with King so he had reasonable grounds for leaving in the end I would say especially when City offered him security and a better deal who wouldn't accept it? In all honesty he was an approachable guy and easy to talk I don't really hold any grudges he's just been unfortunate with how his career has panned out.

Howard wasnt offered a deal, Kingy had to offer a deal to either Smith or Howard and chose Smith, Howard wouldnt have signed anyway as he was pissed off at being benched whilst Lee Holmes was on loan

Howard was offered a reduced terms deal and rejected it......Sandy Gray was peddled out to say they didn't offer a deal as result.

if they did offer Howard a contract and he turned it down, why lie and say they didnt offer him 1? that would make the club look even worse, surely if he rejects it they can make him to look like a money grabber like they did with Smith

Title: Grunt Smith strikes back allegedly over loyalty jibes
Post by: glos_robin on Monday, March 17, 2008, 18:15:10
Because at the time they probably didn't want it known they were offering reduced terms contracts........who knows but Howard refused a new deal and when he said that in the press Gray popped up and basically called him a liar. As per usual the old board fed supporters a pack of lies and at that time the majority of our fans fell for it, thankfully the truth about them came out in the end.

offering someone under the age of 24 a reduced contract is fucking stupid.

We should have offered him an improvement deal, even it was only by 1p a year....then if he did turn it down then we would have been entitled to some compo surely?

loooking back in t'old threads it seems fairly common consensus that howard wasn't offered a contract, and smith was offered a contract, but city offered him a better one. But everything would be all right because we had thorpe and cureton....

Oh deary me are you about 10 or something.

Contract negotiations with Howard actually began in the February prior to him leaving in May and at one stage he was only a few days from signing a new deal but then the goalposts changed and the deal was shelved whilst we tried for the play-offs. Howard was then offered a deal on reduced terms in the summer following Grant Smiths rise to the fore. Andy King himself even let it slip later on in the closed season when he said he didn't even really offer the contract to Howard as it was reduced terms and he knew it wouldn't have been acceptable. Once Smith rejected his deal they turned their attention back on Howard upping the offer but by then it was too late. Grant Smith and Brian Howard are 2 players I actually know alot about as the first team captain at uni was Brian Howards best mate and one of my mates was Paul Stapleton's son and Grant Smith spent a period on loan at Plymouth. I know fuck all about other players but I think you will find I'm right about this

well, if howard was offered improved terms on the contract he was currently on at the time we would have been due compensation. if i remember correctly we didn't receive any, which would suggest he was offered a worse deal.

He was on quite a wadge as he was on the verge of signing for Chelsea as peculiar as it sounds when King somehow King signed him. They couldn't match that deal but offered an increased reduced terms deal if that makes sense  :?

Howard wasnt on great money at all! Howard was at Chelsea for a few months trying to earn a contract until Ambramovich took over and signed Veron Cole and Duff within a few weeks, Howard was fucked! joined on the same money as Nicho which was £800p/w,

I couldn't say either way, although I want glos to be right.

I can say that in that close season we did everything we could to get players off our books.  We were on a rapid wage reduction spree under the old regime, probably because they knew the shit storm was on it's way without further investment coming in (as it turned out).  Players were offered reduced terms and we did shave some of the wage bill off.  The impact was seen the next season when it became clear that our side was no longer anywhere good enough to survive in the same league.
