I've been doing work all day and went straight to the Oldham game, didn't realise there were tremors in Kent until after this quake. The entire house shook.

It is indeed crazy, and cool 8)

If I was half asleep I would have probably freaked out a bit more.

I half wondered if someone was having a go at the patio door when I heard a shaking noise, then my bed started moving haha.

I think I will go to bed in a minute once I get my excited kid phase out of the way

Fuck me, I've just wandered dowstairs in the nuddy checking all over as I thought the house was falling down!

The bed was shaking like someone was furiously masturbating in a caravan. Apparently.

Swindon, twinned with LA!

:) BBC is too slow. The TEF is where it's at.

Siezemograph measured it at 4.7, 30 miled from Hull, somewhere near cleethorpes. Pretty impressive we all felt it from Ooop North Yorkshire to Summerset

Confirmation that Ash Brake, Swindon (opposite the Orbital Centre) was "rocked" by the earthquake too.  I was asleep the doors on my built in wardrobe were rattling so much they woke me up, thought it was the cats at first, but they weren't about.

Wake up this morning to find out I'm no longer an Earthquake virgin, I feel used and abused to tell you the truth!!!!

I was sat downstairs reading and felt the chair wobble, felt like an express train had gone past but then I remembered I don't live near a railway. So I ruled that out and assumed it was just a big lorry had gone close by on the dual carriageway behind us although I'd never felt that before and we get plenty of traffic on the dc. It did occur to me fleetingly that maybe it was an earth tremor but I obviously dismissed that as being just overdramatic. So finally I assumed it was related to the most of a bottle of red I'd sunk and went to bed, woke up this morning and found out it was an earth tremor after all which was a bit of a relief (ie that it wasn't the wine). But the missus slept right through it and claims not to have noticed - mind, she's always saying she felt nothing when the earth has obviously moved. Erm, as earthquake survival tales go, I must say I'm a bit disappointed to only be able to claim "And then my chair went a bit wobbly", it's not really one to thrill the grandkids with is it?

I must have been fast asleep when the the "Big one" in Indonesia hit, because other people said that their bed was shaking and stuff, although I did get rather heavilly drunk the night before (It was Christmas after all). I did get a tad wet though.

Whilst I was in Malaysia a few months ago I missed one in Bangkok, the misses was in BKK at the time though and it freaked her out a bit.

Earthquakes in Indonesia seem to be a very regular occurrence with a big'un (7 - 8.5ish) every 2 months or so. Each time there is a governmant warning which send the coastal population scampering for the mountains, for obvious reasons.

Considering my lack of job prospects in Bangkok I have decided to look outside of BKK, and knowing that I would get forewarned of a possible tsunami in Phuket has encouraged me to have a butchers there for jobs.

Also.

I once had a Fillipino GF, it was a very short lived affair and I would not reccomend a fillipino GF to anybody, but that's a different story.

But anyway, during my time with her I learned that Earthquakes are a common affair and mandatorilly they all the the exact procedure's of what to do should an Earthquake happen.

Apparently things like laying under the bed are a big no no because you could become crushed/trapped by falling debris.

Apparently the most sensible and safe thing to do is to stand in a door-frame which for whatever reason offers much protection.

I'd still be tempted to go for the "Under the bed" option myself though.

Under the bed is for nuclear attack.

It may be difficult for some of our younger readers to contemplate, but at the height of the Cold War around 1980/81 when the USA were deploying  cruise and Persching  missiles at Greenham Common ....that the Government had to issue civil defence pamphlets like Protect and Survive, which described simple  methods for trying to survive an attack.

Such as sitting in the cupboard under the stairs and piling sandbags and earth bags o the stairs.....if no cupboard take down doors and make a lean to or sit under a big table and in both cases fortify with bags.   Of course lay in supplies of food and water.  This led to periodic panic buying of bottled water etc.

Some entrepreneurial types even made a bit from building proper shelters for the well  heeled.

Think the majority  of the population stuck their fingers in their ears and went la la la la it will never happen, while some of us got on with protesting.

I remember once a "chat" that one of my step-dads had with me once, about how the world might be blown about because of one man who could push a button and drop a big bad bomb that would destroy the world.

Being about 10-ish at the time my imagination was running wild and I had images of a character who looked liked Einstein, running around with some kind of remote with a big red button on it whilst laughing insanely.
Looking back I think that he was probably a bit concerned about the Cold war and that.

Delboy and Rodney had their own fall-out shelter didn't they, and Dell-boy knicked the lead from some yard.

Yeah, I remember them :D

I thought it was all a bit pointless, unless you were rich and could afford a lead lined, concrete, underground bunker you were basically fucked.

Don't think hiding under the stairs, or taping your windows, would protect you much from the initial blast, or the fallout.

They were scary days Yeovil ... I remember feeling exactly the same .... we had lessons at school to tell us what to do in the case of nuclear attack, for all the good that would have done. As you say it seemed to be inevitable, you just hoped they would hit the midlands or the north and not the south.

The instant death blast radius of a even modern nuclear weapons isn't that big is it? A couple of miles radius or so for instant? So unless you're close to an obvious target or they blanket bomb the country, you'll probably be ok for a few weeks. Until other stuff like cunts going around looting your stuff and foot shortages kick in and you get cancer.

Fuck knows, I could be wrong. But I thought the image of one bomb taking out the entire south of England or something was a bit of an exaggeration.

Well tbf they were right, weren't they?

Indeed on this occasion they were right.....personally I think it important that governments know they cannot expect to get away with decisions without  raising some extra parliamentary opposition.

Wasnt their a nuclear bunker underneath the now demolished police offices on fleming way?

Its a distinct possibility.....back in the day, it was always good fun to reveal how councils and other authorities took steps to ensure their own survival, while doing fuck all for Joe Public.

Their counter argument of course always being that in the event of attack, it would need organisation to run the country still.

Nuclear isn't that bad, if Fairford gets done we'll only need major repairs to the house at worse.

The truly scray thing is that should freaky countries like N. Korea and Iran figure out HOW to do it, then there is a fair chance that they will.

Next time we see a pic of fB's room, I fully expect to see something like this in the corner.

Drink lots of stashed bottled water, wait an hour and hey presto.
