If you go to a middle eastern country and are stupid enough to carry any drugs on you then I have no sympathy for you whatsoever if you get caught.  None whatsoever.  Different countries have different levels of strictness in terms of drugs.  Can the bloke not get by without a joint for a few days.  Hope he enjoys his career break.

You are a deluded idiot. If you were caught say, speeding (as in a motor vehicle sense, not drugs) in a foreign country and it was punishable by four years in prison it would be equally ridiculous and just as much a petty crime.

Now fair enough the bloke shouldn't have had the stuff in the first place, let alone carry it through customs. But 4 years is ludicrous. He wasn't dealing, carried only a supply small enough for his own personal use and clearly wasn't trying to smuggle anything back intentionally.

Yes it is a very very very harsh penalty and way over the top in OUR opininons.

But it is THEIR country and anybody going there should respect that.

Grooverider, asides from his stupidity probably didn't deserve it but the moral of the story is: If you don't like don't go there, and if you do go there do NOTHING that you shouldn't do. Its as simple as that really.

There was a case that I vaguely remember once of a young couple (British I think) who where knicked for having sex before marriage, which IS/WAS a criminal offence by that countries law. I think that they went to prison for a bit, not sure though but if they did is wasn't for long.

But to put it into context: In the last couple of months ago I remember in Saudi Arabia (I think) that a group of men where sent to prison for gang-raping a woman. The thing is that the woman who was raped was ALSO sent to prison for beng alone with a man/men (By choice) whom she was not realated to.

The point I am trying to make is that they are just as harsh on their own, so why should we expect any different just because our culture is different?

I agree with Jan.  Its been made very public, especially in the last few years what level of tolerence these countries have regarding drug possession.

I think hes an idiot for taking the risk knowing the penalty he'd get should he be caught. Only himself to blame.

I haven't read the links but if it does talk of cases like a tiny amount stuck to someones shoe then that is harsh and I am not defending rape victims being locked up either - completely different subject.

And the guy with 0.03 grams of cannabis on his shoe could well have stood on somebody elses discarded spliff, withouth ever having done any drugs throughout his life. If people knowingly break the law then they have nobody else to blame but themselves, but some of those sentences simply do not serve justice.

The amount of British tourists that break the law abroad is too many to count. If everyone got put away for 4 years for thsoe offences nobody would travel. I'm talking about silly things like drunken public behaviour, sex in public, indecent exposure etc. Not advocating it at all, but I would sympathise for those that got a 4 year stint over an act of stupidity. If someone accidently left a miniature bottle of alcohol in their bag? Would that be different because alcohol in this country it is socially and legally acceptable?

I certainly wouldn't wish anyone to prison for a minor incident. This country or abroad. I'm not sayign he should be released or the Goverment should/n't help him. I'm just sayign I can sympathise.
