I think the catcher in the rye is a bit over-rated myself. I can see why people like it and see it as a bit of a classic, but I find it hard to get over the fact that the main character wasshisname is basically a bit of a knob. Whatever mental issues he has.

i'll get back to you on that when i finish, though i quite like him so far. the embracing of solitude and matter-of-factness/bluntness about him rings true with me.

It was at least 3 years ago that I read it. It'd quite possible that I'm being a bit harsh on it. I might give it a reread at some point.

I remember reading The Buddha of Suburbia (by Hanif Kureishi) around the same time and enjoying it.

I've got a feeling I might have been going through the books one of my housemates had to read for her English course at the time. I think I read Lolita around the same time, although I don't remember much about it. Which seems odd.

Things from that long ago seem a bit vague now. I'm not sure my poor brain is up to all this remembering stuff.

One of the strange things about reading books, is that the imagery and impact are definitely in the here and now....once you've finished the effect of reading soon disappears....

I saw that. Nearly started a thread about it.

I'm guessing someone just used a thesaurus without checking for meanings.

I think the film is based on it.  Good read though, can't help thinking I wish I'd read the book first as is so often the case.

just finished the damned united about clough's 44 days in charge at leeds- quality read, anyone with any interest in the great man should (and probably already has) have a read.

also polished off a book called the kite runner, about afghanistan and other stuff, highly recommended and i hear its been made into a film which will probably be wank.

read both of these books please  :smile1:

half way through freakonomics at the mo. the 'how is the klu klux klan like a group of real-estate agents?' and 'why do drug dealers still live with their moms?' chapters are particularly ace.

onto liar's poker when i'm done with this.

nice to read well-written books about economics at the mo when i'm spending most of my time buried in stereotype threat and visualisation is sport journal articles for the essay and dissertation i'm currently doing
