Title: A-levels and stuff for slightly-mature students
Post by: sonicyouth on Monday, April 18, 2005, 20:27:20
right, I left school after my GCSE's but I'm considering going back to college before it's too late, but at the grand old age of 19 will I be considered a mature student, or will I be able to slum it with the masses? Do I have to take the full load of AS/A-levels or can I just take a couple of a-levels and fuck the rest off? Anyone done A-level photography?

21+ is a mature student.

You may be better doing a foundation year then look at heading off to Uni.  You'd love it SY.

Sister is doing a degree in photography at Preston and loves it.

a levels are great. and i'm great at them. what a mix.

at my college you have to do at least 15 hours a week = 3 a levels

there's loads of choice of b-tecs/avces as well which are worth as much but are more practical.

I did a short photography course a couple of years ago, on some youth program for bums like me. I really enjoyed it.

English is another option as well, my mate tells me media is shit because they force you towards marketing, film studies sounds cool though.

try an access course, they are a piece of piss and qualify you for uni, plus they are only a year long, i did a multimedia one, was a doddle, then got into uni to do media studies.

I left for Uni at 21 so I was a proper mature student, having worked full time for a couple of years I found the whole affair a piece of piss.

Few hours a day and you will cruise it.

pick an easy course - my simple advice, heed the warning. uni is easier than A-Levels though

Title: A-levels and stuff for slightly-mature students
Post by: mrs_spacey on Monday, April 18, 2005, 22:38:22
cool!

i'd recommend doing 2 a levels - possibly in english and something else like a language or humanity (definitely not media studies, film studies, art, sports studies  :Ride On Fatbury's Lovestick  drama etc) then you can have time to do some extra stuff like photography without the extra exam pressure

Unless you are really into the idea don't bother with "uni" its a waste of time and money...

Title: A-levels and stuff for slightly-mature students
Post by: sonicyouth on Monday, April 18, 2005, 22:58:30
I think 2 a-levels is the maximum my laziness will cope with, so that's sorted and why can't I do film studies, I want to be the next Martin Scorsese  8)

Title: A-levels and stuff for slightly-mature students

because its not a proper a level

how about economics?

maths?

history?

geography?

Title: A-levels and stuff for slightly-mature students
Post by: sonicyouth on Monday, April 18, 2005, 23:31:51
i can't count  :D

geography makes me want to cry with boredom. history fair enough. i'm not going to study, i want something that will get me a job of some kind. something i'm interested in.

avoid economics like the plague unless you are super clever. I did it and sat there for 2 years like this   . I struggled because im lazy and it was more boring than 20,000 aids injections to the face. I got an E      :!:

The economics units i did in the first year were stupidly difficult. Not touching anything like that again (by choice anyway). Avoid maths as well, unless you are willing to put the effort in

From a total personal view here I dont believe in qualifications etc.  Someone once said to me (and i think its a famous quote) that everyone in life gets opportunities in life, its what you do with them.

Personally I fucked up school due to not working and being more interested in scams etc..then got moved to london didnt know anyone and finished my three years with A's in Business Studies, Accountancy and Busienss Law.  I then got offered a job that I would have wanted after uni so bombed off my course and worked.  From here ive been very lucky.

On the other hand it can work very well for peoiple.  I ahve mates at uni who have excelled and found employment after.  I also have mates who after uni took jobs on less wage then I was on after college.  Monies not everythging but if you think uni will suit you go for it.  Just think carefully about what course you want.  Sometimes I wish I had gone and at other times im glad I didnt

I sometimes wish i'd gone to Uni also.

Economics A levels wasnt that hard.

I got a D with 70% lecture attendance and virtually no revision. might have been better if a question that i didnt know anything about hadnt have come up in the final exams.

I must of been having a  :doobie  when i was supposed to be taught that bit

My advice would be never do anything that doesn't interest you.

If you are studying as a means to end, then you might be prepared to put up with the mind numbing grind of academic courses.........if you are going into it half arsed, then do try and select something that'll interest......as others have said there are lots of wacky courses out there if you look.

Title: A-levels and stuff for slightly-mature students
Post by: sonicyouth on Tuesday, April 19, 2005, 10:41:53
There's no chance of me doing economics. None at all. It'd bore me so much my head would collapse.

I might do computing because I'll find it piss easy, and something like photography/film studies because it'll interest me. I'm not really going to college to study a specific field, more a case of finding something to do, getting some qualifications cos I've got fuck all and doing it before I'm too old and I regret it.

One of my kids is doing a BTech in computing.....about 15 hours a week, and supposed to be equivalent of 3 A levels.......a lot of it he finds tedious, but there are practical elements like building machines and web site construction that he enjoys.

  Its all continuous asessment.

Be very careful with IT.  If you’re not going to specialise in a particular language, or discipline then you can end up screwed.

Most large firms have already started to outsource tasks to India where an experienced programmer costs a fraction of the cost in the UK.

In addition we have started hiring any monkeys on temp contracts instead of just graduates, they work for less, can be trained to do a particular task and if they’re crap they get the boot.  Graduates and monkeys alike work on little more than minimum wage in an attempt to earn a permanent contract.

Just keep well away from Physics easily the dullest A-level there is, as long as you aslo keep away from Maths and Chemistry the other ones are far far easier.

my mate got an A at as-level maths last year and an E at music technology. SO obviously, instead of getting a first in maths at uni he's going to go to a college in bristol and do more music tech. fool

A's in as maths are ten a penny, 13 year olds get them....whereas something like Music tech with an emphasis on creativity is more challenging and so rewarding.

Go as a mature student then......if your're say in late 20's then loads of 19 year old birds think you're mature and interesting and a skilled lover.  A winning combination.
