Title: LCD TVs
Post by: mattboyslim on Monday, December 31, 2007, 12:49:16
I'm just sorting out buying a flat, and as a result I need a proper telly for the living room, I know some of you chaps have bought recently, any advice on what to get? I'm not getting HD, and I'm not really into gaming, but would like a 37 inch, HD ready, looking to spend £500-800 for the right one, also any decent online shops as last time I used Pixmania and their customer service is shocking.

Stick to Panasonic, Sony or Samsung.

This forum was invaluable to me when I bought mine.

pannasonic generally are the top rated. but for 37 inch upwards i'd opt for a plasma, again panasonic seem to be the best.

Most LCD TV's aren't very good at handling SD sources, in reality SD looks better on a good old fashioned CRT.

I've got a Samsung 37" (LE37R87BDX) and the SD picture quality is watchable but not fantastic. Most LCD's are the same for SD.

If you want decent SD quality then Plasma is the way to go and Panasonic are the daddy when it comes to Plasma.

Like Ralphy says, look on avforums. I just did a few searches before I made my mind up and the stuff on there is really helpful.

Cheers chaps, excuse my stupidity, but what's SD?

I was told that LCD is more long lasting than plasma, and that Samsung made the best LCDs, they supply the tubes for Sony, who then charge more for an inferior product?

standard definition.

I've got a 42" Panny Plasma and it's great. You can get a 37" version as well.

i'd be looking at going for a full HD TV now though (1080p rather than 1080i). It'll give you a bit of futureproofing built in.

if you went for a slightly smaller screen i'd reccomend the panasonic 32inch 32lxd70.i own one and sd stuff is spot on.hd its top notch.
i researched this tv before buying it and it was top raterd by loads of expert reviews.

for models you fancy. type their model codes into google and check out the reviews for them

If you're gonna use it for gaming then don't get a Plasma because screen burn can occur.

Plasma's look good in darker rooms where as LCD's look good in lighter rooms.

If you're going for a screen over 40 inches then get a Plasma.

Another thing, 1080p is only really noticeable on bigger screens.

A 720p screen still looks fantastic.

I disagree, for anything under 50" the difference between 720p and 1080p is hardly noticeable.

I read this review which made my mind up for me and saved splashing out the extra cash for 1080p.

fair enough - mine's only 1080i because i bought it a year ago, reviewers are always banging on about 1080p and how great it is though.

720p will probally look clearer than 1080i anyhow.

It's all about progessive.

After being dragged around electrical type shops the last few days, I think you get what you pay for.

Rather have a 32" tv with a crisp picture than a 40" blurry screen because it's a bit cheaper.

Happy New Year you fuckers xx
