Got my first driving lesson tomorrow, absolutely bricking it
Am I expected to just get in and off we go?

they normally take you on the magic roundabout for your first lesson.

there is a lot to be said for not being able to drive.

They will relax you and then go very slow.  Good luck a licence is  awonderful thing, respect it

You'll spend a lot of it talking. Well it depends who which company you've gone with.

I hit a kerb on my first lesson, like proper drove into it. But it was the instructors fault.

They usually take you somewhere nice and queit for your first lesson, with only a small chance of knocking down a small child, or maybe a shrew.

my first lesson was pretty much in the cul de sac outside my house, it was just learning the controls and other basics and clutch control.

clutch control is definitely the toughtest thing to learn although it depends on the car. my old clio had the springiest clutch EVER.

I hit a curb on my test and still passed!

I hit the curb with a black kid's teeth. I got sent for jail for that one, where my old black headteacher and Star Fleet captain helped me change my racist ways. When I got out I became a good influence on my little brother but this didn't stop him getting done by a black kid in the school toilets.

I don't blame STFC4LIFE because he's probably too young to have seen it.

I had 2 hours twice a week and think 2 hours is loads better than 1 as by the time you get into it its finished.

2 hours you get some good driving time and more confidence IMO.

Me too. When I was reversing around the corner. I don't think my examiner noticed as I was engaging him in a deep discussion on seabass.

Who you going with Dean? If they're no good go to Pete Snook, he taught me, he's a top bloke and a great instructor. You'll probably spend some time up bowerhill industrial estate to begin with, whoever you go with. You'll be fine, just  don't put too much pressure on yourself to pick things up straight away, and take your time.

I did one hour lessons cos my instructor reckoned 2 hour lessons were a waste of time and money  8)

i had 9 lessons, they had to be two hours long because i lived in the middle of nowhere, by the time i got to swindon it would have been time to turn around and go back.

Don't press too hard on the indicator stalk in your first lesson, they snap very easily  :oops:

Not a massive amount.  Cant really remember now as it was about 4 years ago I think  :?

I'm an actual driving instructor, your first lesson should go something along the lines of:
An introduction to the Cockpitt drill, IE setting the car up correctly for you to drive it.
An explanation of all the main controls, what they do and how you use them.
A briefing on Prepare, Observe, Move, or in other words how to get the car moving safely.
A briefing on Mirror, Signal, Position, Speed, Look (that's Mirror, Signal, Manoeuvre in old money), or in other words how to stop the car safely.
Then you'll be given the chance to have a go, if your instructor is any good the lesson will run at your pace and he won't move on to the next bit until your confident you fully understand what he's said. He'll talk you through everything you are doing once the car is moving, not just leave you to get on with it, as you become better at it he'll stop telling you what to do instead he should ask you what you are about to do.
To be fair this is probably the easiest lesson you'll have as all you need to concentrate on today is getting the car moving  and stopped, it all starts to get a bit harder when you do junctions and stuff  :shock:

Also about 40% of instructors currently teaching are only doing so on a trainee licence, meaning they have had the minimum amount of training required by the DSA and have not passed the qualifying exams but instead are using learner drivers to practise on.
I'm quite pleased to say I'm fully qualified.

That wasn't meant to sound all big headed.
It is worrying though to think drivers we will have to share the roads with in future are being taught by unqualified and untested trainers, some of whom will never pass the qualifying exams and will eventually get kicked out of the system. I've had a few students come from failed instructors and to be fair the lack of skills they show for the number of lessons they've had is quite worrying.

I know you weren't, tbh didn't know what else to say!

Reg failed his first driving test cos he hit the bloke in front holding the flag

I failed my first test for mounting the kerb on a bay park. Booking another one as i speak Oh and Shamrock are quite a good company.

just hope you don't turn out as bad as those on itv now! If you've failed your test 7 times you might as well just give up.

I had 5 lessons in the summer and gave up! Probably start agian when i can be arsed, or someone recommends a decent driving instructor that doesn't mind that im really really shit!?  :?
