I would, but STFC will, in all likelihood, always exist on some level.

If we were liquidated, as i understand it, the club would still exist, all be it without league status and i suspect be at around Supermarine's level. That's what someone said anyway.

I dont think I could watch a 'new' Swindon - been supporting the current/old one for so long. What I'm trying to say it just wouldn't be the same for me, I would just become an armchair premiership footie fan.

The main problem would be the ground......the CG would be a no no because of rent.

So it would probabaly have to be a groundshare with Supermarine.

Not sure... I would probably lose interest. Non league football doesn't really appeal to me. I would imagine a few would go watch Supermarine as they are only 3 promotions off the FL

i was just thinking about that. it'd be weird watching a team that technically wasn't swindon in a totally different ground. it just wouldn't be right...

I've given this a bit of thought over some time.....in fact it needn't be quite so bleak as first seems, insofar as we wouldn't be a professional club.  Back in the days of Justin Tomlinson :chunder: I quizzed him as to why the Cricket Club paid fuck all rent for a bigger site, whilst the FC paid sky high rent for a smaller site.  He informed it was because STFC was a business whereas the CC wasn't.

In which case teh club could claim a similar situation as the CC and have its rent slashed....in fact as a club run by fans might be possible to get grants.

Of course, this is fantasy, as SBC would immediately sense on opportunity to turf the FC out and sell the CG site, to make up the shortfall in rent.

I think it would be pretty ace if we could be the plastic fans of non-league football.

In all honesty the idea of starting at the bottom and creating some new history and being part of it does appeal to me. We'd need decent crowds to make it work though.

yes, but the football we're playing now doesnt attract the fans. Attendences are decreasing and people moan about the standard of football and the players get booed off at half time if we're not winning.

Can you imagine how much worse it would be, in a lower league with worse players. Plus because we were once a league cup some of you guliable idiots would expect us to shoot straigh up the leagues and youd get pissed off when we didnt.

we're fucking rubbish. I dunno if I explained but all the players have gone so we've started again from scratch playing whoever will turn up. We're lucky to get 12 players each week. At the moment its about putting a team out! hopefully we'll find some more players and improve the team... :|

no, id be all for it....

....however being an ex-league club (well technically we wouldnt be, but we'd all think we were, if that makes sense)

Most people would either be put off by the extremely shit standard of football and/or the over exaggerated expectations. Almost like now....but on a larger scale.

AFC Swindon wouldnt attract the usual 6000 and it wouldnt need to in the early days.If 1000 people watched a club at that level it would be a decent crowd and I think if they were doing well and if it had the right sort of publicity thats would soon grow.It would be about claiming your football club back.

It wouldn't be STFC either,it wouldnt have any League history it would be a new club all together.

i wouldnt want it to be called AFC either by the way.

Question for you: Would Swindon ever reform in Swindon?

We talk about sides like Aldershot and Accrington coming back from the dead, but other sides like - Guildford City (ex top amateur side) have not reformed or played in their city for many a year. Slough Town ex Conference (and a town comparable to the size of Swindon) no longer has a ground and share in Windsor. Wokingham United just missed out on Conference football a couple of years ago have gone it looks forever, they could not gain planning permission for a new ground even though they had £1m in the bank.

Yes I am kill joy on this one, but if the worst happens to STFC you are very unlikely to reform in the borough of Swindon in my opinon.

Not strictly true....Aldershot is now Aldershot Town....they make no claim to being the same side.

Stanley disappeared for many years altogether....a new club bearing the Stanley name but playing at a different ground was formed....they seem happy enouigh to claim a continuity, but strictly speaking its a differnt club.

I won't support TEF United.

Unless it is a team full of nude women, who have to play nude and against men due to a religious loop hole somewhere, who win by confusing their opponents with tit and fadge displays.

We'd sail up the leagues and be heavily supported by men all over the world.

The team won't enter via a tunnel but via a catwalk which goes through the middle of one of the stands and is raised about 1 metre above the seats.

You'll be allowed to buy a table, instead of a seat, and also be allowed to smoke, drink and throw money at the players in my stadium.

I'll speak to the banks on Monday.

Perhaps they don't even have to play football, and we could move the team inside so they can just serve drinks and light our fags?

I'm on to a fucking winner.

fair enough reg.but aldershot play at the same ground in the same colours.
makes them the same club in my book.
dont know fuck all about acringtons history myself apart from the fact that they were a league club many moons ago.

useless fact for you.
around 89-91. myself and a few mates were going to go to ipswich away.this game got called off due to bad weather.(snow i think)
we ended up at aldershot vs maidstone to watch their fa cup tie.maidstone won but i cannot remember the score.both were league clubs that soon went out of business too as we all know.

I read something about Aldershot, where they said they wanted a new start so dropped the history....fair enough its their choice.

Useless fact for you....I went to Aldershot in the early 80's for a Boxing Day fixture, it was postponed because of a waterlogged pitch.  So as to not completely waste my time, I did a walk just outside Newbury up to an Iron Age hillfort called Beacon Hill.   Stumbling about in the rain and gloom I discovered the grave of Lord Caernarvon, who was supposedly cursed by funding the discovery of Tutankaman's tomb, and being around the excavation....he died soon after.

I've yet to find out why he ended up there, rather than consecrated ground.

Stumbling about in the rain and gloom I discovered the grave of Lord Caernarvon, who was supposedly cursed by funding the discovery of Tutankaman's tomb, and being around the excavation....he died soon after.

Fuck me, I knew there must have been better options than going on to Tottenham - West Ham that day.

85th minute winner from Steve Perryman....I doin't suppose for a minute you'd have thought that Ardiles and Hoddle would be the next 2 managers of STFC....Mickey Hazard and Paul Allen would play for the Town and Tony Galvin would have been assistant manager.

If I go somewhere, I always try and have a bit of a stumble round, or somewhere on the way.  Get to see bits of the country you'd otherwise wouldn't know existed.

Reg, the Rent on the CG is based on the clubs turnover, so it's quite possible a small sized non league club habitting the site could get a fair deal on the rent.  If you imagine we'd be playing in front of 500 hardy souls lets say, then you could reasonably expect 1/10th the rent we pay right now so about £20k a year.  That's less than a very small shop in town.

Fair points, but it presumes SBC is a reasonable landlord....given that the lease as stands only has a short time to run, its more likely SBC would inssit this be honoured and use a failure to evict the club and sell off the land.

Expect SBC to use any failure, as reason to change the way the land is used. IMO there would be little sympathy towards providing a ground for an AFC Swindon as it would not be demonstrable as a "best value" use of such a large facility.

Plus SBC have never convinced me that they give a monkeys about being altruistic!
