I played it once, they said I was the hooker, this made be very uncomfortable, with a bunch of blokes grunting with effort behind you.    Then I realized they play this at posh schools with no girls.  This made me even more uncomfortable.

FULL-TIME: SWINDON TOWN 5 GILLS 0
Posted on: Sat 06 Oct 2007

Full-time at The County Ground: Swindon Town 5 Gillingham 0

Attendance: 6,345

After two excellent displays against Leeds and Leyton Orient, The Gills were brought crashing back down to earth with a disappointing 5-0 reverse at the hands of Swindon Town. The home side got off to the perfect start at The County Ground. They took the lead after just four minutes, thanks to a perfect volley from Scottish winger John Paul McGovern. Summer signing Craig Easton broke into space down the left before crossing for McGovern, who clinically dispatched. The lead was doubled just two minutes later when on-loan striker Simon Cox swivelled and powerfully drilled past the helpless Simon Royce. It could've been three on 26 minutes when Cox was once again put through but he drilled his shot across the face of goal. Then on the stroke of half-time, Billy Paynter headed wide when he perhaps should've done better. The Gills cause wasn't helped as Ian Cox was forced off with a head-injury after just 12 minutes. The experienced central-defender was replaced by Simon King, a summer signing from League Two side Barnet.

At the other end, The Gills created few clear cut chances of their own in the opening period but King threatened to pull a goal back - sadly he got little connection on an attempted overhead kick.

After half-time, the home side scored their third on 51 minutes; Paynter, a recent addition from Southend, produced a powerful bustling run before drilling the ball into the top-corner.

A couple of minutes later, The Gills threatened to reduce the deficit. Delroy Facey produced the perfect cushioned header for Barry Cogan but the Irish winger slotted the ball just wide of Phil Smith in the Swindon goal with The Swindon keeper well beaten.

On the hour mark, the game was effectively ended as a contest. Firstly Paynter hit the bar with a stinging drive and seconds later Cox headed home his second of the game from close range. Paynter then scored his second of the game eight minutes from time to complete the scoring and heap yet more misery on Gillingham. It was his fifth goal in his last two home matches.

Substitutes Mark Bentley and Gary Mulligan came on in the second-half for Adam Nowland and David Graham but they were unable to make any real impact as Swindon continued to dominate.

The hardworking Facey continued to try and inspire those around him and kept working hard for the whole game while Royce pulled off several good saves but Gillingham's away form continues to cause concern after yet another disappointing display on the road. The fans continued to cheer for the whole game but the next match cannot come quickly enough.

The Gills are next back in action on Tuesday night when they play Luton Town in the second round of the Johnstone's Paint Trophy. Please turn up and show your support at KRBS Priestfield where The Gills continue to prove a real force, as their record of seven points from their last nine shows.

some bloke was giving arron brown loads of stick throughout the game. brown didn't react to it.

I didn't think Aaron Brown was playing :?

That was embarrassingly easy,of course going two down in ten minutes didn't help them but they looked awful.Walking to the train station a Gills fan was saying how well he thought we'd played,i thought it was more a case of how shit they were and we just put them out of their misery :D  :beers:

Bit unsavoury at the train station though   There were Swindon goons hanging about who i assume were looking for the Gill's 'lads' most of whom had left when they went three down  :Ride On Fatbury's Lovestick:

What a great game. The Gills were fucking awful aside from tea towel sodje, who  is actually a good player. We were different class though. It could easily have been 7,8 or 9!

Only downer is we are down to our last centre back and have run out of left backs.

Gills were crap and at the end Cox and Paynter were fighting each over to get theit hat-tricks.

Could've been 12...and the Cox overhead kick that hit the inside of the post, and somehow didn't go in, was my highlight.

Every player was superb today, even pook as a substitute right back(sorry to disapoint the majority of you).

Paynter & Cox were different class and if we had scored 10 Gills couldn't have complained.

I actually thought that Gills played some neat football, without any cutting edge, before they capitulated at 5_0.

I am struggling to think when we last played so well offensively (possibly 4-0 away victories @ Watford & Bristol City in the early 90's)

Fooking ace game, sprayed the ball about, good crossing and should have had a couple more. Can't fault any Town player on the pitch today.

Today was a top performance although the Gills were the worst team I think I have ever seen at the CG. Should have been double figures really but hey can't complain really, enjoyed the game just a shame about the ongoing off the field problems

I have a lot of time for iffy but do feel that this is a sweet revenge for driving up to nottingham a couple of years ago to see a poor 7-1 defeat under iffy. This 5-0 is much appreciated iffy

Fair play to Scally. Swindon wouldnt do anything like that. Remmember Forest? That relegated us and no one gave a fook.

Iffy is cr..p. Hes not a manager. Hes not even a coach. Shouldnt/wont get another job in football.

vincent first and foremost is a defender.he does that job pretty well imo.
forget the flaws. he is doing alright for us and where we are at the moment.

if we had had painter and cox from the seasons start we would be top of this league.i'm convinced of it

i think he's fucking shite at left-back, always have done.

he's slow, has poor positional sense, he can't distribute a football and has been at fault for a goals in the past.

on the other hand, i rate nicholas which many people disagree with

hmm I thought everything came down the right in the first half.

As I've said before, Vincent does a good job of orangising the defence and keeping the line.....its always him you hear shouting all the time.

Every time we clear a corner you can hear Vincent telling everyone to push up. Nicholas barely speak on the pitch.

He's never going to be brilliant going forward and over lap and set up goals, but he doesnt need to do that.

Conversely, it's my first game of the season tomorrow
Not a bad start :D

Everyone played well today, particularly impressed with J-PM, Paynter and Easton. The blonde bombshells terrorised them down the wings from start to finish and the front two were a real handful. Very impressed with Collins before he got injured as well.

I liked the way we kicked on second half and went out to kill the game off, all too often in the past we've tried to defend leads like that and failed.

As has been said, Gills were awful, but you can only beat what's put in front of you and we did that with a real style and panache.

I haven't enjoyed a town game as much as that in aaaaaaaages

You can't do better than orangising a defence.

Fucking loved today, we really should have had 10. Vincent did play well today, one brilliant challenge in particular, one of the first decent performances i've seen him put in this season. The front line were immense, i loved it. JPM, Paynter, Cox, Roberts, Easton - all good.

But my favourite moment of the match was when ifil went up for a corner, the ball got cleared and he sprinted back 60 yards and made a tackle - thats quality and thats why Jerel will be a legend at STFC.

5-0  :beers: fucking love it.

First time I've seen Cox - excellent first touch, worked his socks off and could have had four at least.  Paynter worked hard was strong on the ball but missed a couple of really easy chances - but churlish to moan.  Roberts was ok in the first half and excellent in the second - he even ran back 50 yards and put in a tackle. Collins looked great in the short time he was on and Blackburn covered for him pretty well.  I know the Gills did't do much but the did have a fair number of corners and crosses and I though Smith dealt with these better than I've seen him do in the past. Easton brilliant - great tackling in midfield and a couple of good forward runs.  JP - a menace to them all game and combined well with the Minge, who overlapped all day.  For the Gills, only Sodje and their number 7 turned up, worst back 4 I've seen in an age.  I have to back up those who've said we could have had 10, cos the chances that didn't go in were bloody great chances not half ones.  If Cox's overhead kick had gone in in would have been fantastic.

Best performance so far everything seemed to click into place. Gills were not that good but alot of that was to do with how well we actually played.Easton and peacock (yes peacock) dominated midfield and i would say so far Easton has been our best player.Vincent played well until taken off but i must admit when comingues was attacking down the left that is how i like to see left backs play.

Got to say well done to Sturrock though after not being paid etc swindon teams in the past would of used that as a exuse so fair play to the lads

in the past i thought commingues was a bit light weight at right back but on saturday he was brilliant, winning tackles and winning headers and getting forward and when he couldnt get back roberts covering him.

saying all that though the whole team played brilliantly, extremely hard to pick a man of the match imo.

Easton has been immense for me
