Title: Worried!
Post by: Toni on Tuesday, September 18, 2007, 15:03:07
I know a lot won't be interested in this but the doctor has just called and my mum has got a lump on her liver.

I'm really scared and worried.

I've got no one to turn to - neither has she. She has to rely on me. I just don't know what to do at the moment. I'm in shock.

Main thing toni is find out what it is, the internet is a good place to look.  Search on goggle for a support group and get in touch.  You wont be alone in this thats for sure.

The main thing is lumps can be nothing, at least its been spotted.

Hope its not serious

Actually I'd say the internet is the last place to look. Many syptoms can be caused by many diseases, but it's easy to ignore the less harmful/bening causes and convince yourself that it's the worst possible scenario.

I don't think there is a lot you can do until a diagnosis is made by the pro's. They are usually as quick as possible in cases like this, but there is bound to be a wait and it's always a worrying time. I guess all you can do is be there for her, to try and best reassure her and to try and take her mind off it.

When a diagnosis has been made I'm sure the doctor will be able to advise you of the appropriate course of action (if any is needed), and put you in touch with those better qualified to help should you need to.

I'm sorry not to be of more help.

Sorry to hear that Toni. I disagree with Batch, I think the internet is a great place to look, in my experience pro's won't tell you anything at all if they can help it. It's best to be armed with the most information you can so you know the right questions to ask.

Let us know how you and your mum get on

Thanks guys.

She's got to go for another scan at Cheltenham Hospital. The doctor wouldn't tell us much and we didn't find the internet of much help so we can't help but think it could be the worst case scenario. I keep saying "it'll be nothing mum. Don't panic - it'll be fine" and i hope to god i'm right. Thanks for your support everyone. It means a lot.

I had a lump recently (in fact I've still got it). Luckily it turned out to be nothing serious. Had another scare a few years back which was a lot more worrying. Luckily again it wasn't serious.

Hopefully it'll turn out to be nothing serious, but if not there are plenty of treatments to make people better and a lot of people that will support you. You will realise how strong you can both be as well.

It could be something bad and it could not, until you know for sure it's best not to worry about it too much. It's easy to say, but it won't help anything. Do stuff to keep your mind off it until she has to go for the scan.

I've always wondered about the :kisskiss: emoticon. It's probably the scariest thing ever. It looks tike an evil twisted demented clown on the rampage for some raping or something.

If that thing was trying to kiss me then I'd probably go into hiding. (the emoticon smilie thing that is, not fatbury... err. no wait.)

toni, despite what  people say, trust the NHS, they really are the dogs bollocks. they saved my life and my mums. compared to 10 years ago the standard has improved 100% and its getting better by the day. and this is from someone who has dealings with the NHS probably more than anyone else on this forum, unfortunately.

i hope its nothing and your mum is fine, best wishes.

and not a sarcastic one either.

can we do a sarcastic *big hug* to? They're nearly as fun.

And what mex says. Pretty much everybody I know who's had to have lot's of dealings with the nhs, for one unfortunate reason or another, has always said it's ace. NHS bashing seems to have become the incestuous love child of our blame culture; and a good way of selling newspapers.

I'm not as confident with the NHS if i'm honest. I had an operation that nearly went wrong on that. But i'm sure my mum will be fine (thats what i'm telling myself anyway). Thanks everyone for your kind wishes

Toni, I work for the NHS and your Mum is in safe hands judging by the people I work with.  They get slagged off by the press but there is a lot of expertise and care that goes into their work that never gets reported.  Sound like the thing she needs the most is for you to give her support and reassurance.  Best wishes to you both.

Totally agree

Toni, I have had two tumors removed in the last 3 years and the care that I recieved was second to none.

With regard to looking on the internet, I found that prior to my diagnosis (where I only had symptoms to go by) that searching the internet gave me more worry than it solved.

However, once I was diagnosed I did research the treatment that I was about to undertake which pre-armed me and was a great help for "getting my head around" what lie in store.

Good luck to both your Mum and also yourself, as reading between the lines you are your Mum's primary support.

My thoughts are with you both

That is so crap, and of course if you are the only one she can lean on that heaps pressure on you as well, you have to stay strong though, but the main thing to do is to stay calm and try not to worry yourself overly as it will hopefully turn out to be nothing serious.

Remember if you want anyone to talk to or to "let off steam" at then everyone on this forum is here to listen and offer advice, your not alone your among freinds.

Thank you. Thats very nice of you to say. It is hard cos i have no one to talk to at the moment and i'm trying to calm my mum down by saying "it'll be nothing serious. Don't panic about it". I mean she has me to talk to about this and her worries but i have no one. It feels bizarre.
Thank you everyone.

My problems are nothing compared to Fred's though. Get well soon Fred.
