Title: Car needs a service
Post by: Samdy Gray on Saturday, July 21, 2007, 14:29:25
Anyone recommend anywhere in Swindon that'll do a good job for relatively cheap?

It's a diesel anyway so all it will be is new oil, new filter and a general check over.

Do it yourself if it's just filters and oil.

I'll lend you some sockets, a filter wrench, a trolley jack, something to catch the oil in and a tub of Swarfega.

You can buy your own Haynes manual though.

And then you produce the receipts for the materials/oil/anti freeze/brake fluid for the service.

I have always done this and tbh buyers seem to be more impressed that you have done it yourself (as in taken a bit of responsibility and care rather than passing it off to some 16 year old twonk in the local greasy rag).

My grandad always used to take his to the garage to get serviced and he was a mechanic  :o

Depends who to trust I guess. If someone produced all the materials receipts, rather than service receipts I'd try and knock a fair few quid off.

I sold our Nissan Serena to a dealer with 70,000 miles worth of self service receipts.

He almost wet himself that somebody had bothered to service the fucking thing and could prove it.

And he gave me book price.

Fuck fuck fuck fuck fuck fuck fuck fuck fuck fuck!

Peugeot phone, service is finished. Found a few things that need doing. Replacement indicator bulb, not bad I think. Re-wire the horn, not so bad either. Replaced the clips on the engine cover, not a problem.

Brakes are 95% worn on the front, need new pads & discs. "We'll do it today for £240".  :(  No thanks I say, can't really afford that right now.

Oh, your flywheel and clutch are on the way out as well. That'll be £1200. :jaw2:

Twelve hundred fucking quid! They're having a fucking giraffe! I only bought the car (second hand) just over 3 months ago!

I thought I'm not having this, I'll phone Mr Akers and give him a piece of my mind for selling me a heap of shit. They're supposed to give the car a check over before the sell it and apparently changed the brakes all round as well. Our warranty is 3 months he says, but bring it in and we'll take a look. What's the reg? he says, so I tell him and he goes all quiet and sheepish, I think he remembers he's sold me a heap of shit.

I'm absolutely fucking livid! I'm going to nail this cunt until he gets my car fixed, or until he gives me my money back.

Bad luck Sam, poor deal on that one-  I'm eternally grateful to have paid an extra few quid to get a main dealer used car with 2 more years warranty.

pugs are renowned for bad  brakes, ie quick wear and regular disc and pad replacements.
the clutch quote is mighty high imo. in the future go to an independant reccomended garage that people can tell you they have used for servicing and repairs.
also i'd get in touch with trading standards after checking the sale terms of the car, if the dealer doesn't play ball if i were you .

Title: Car needs a service
Post by: Samdy Gray on Thursday, July 26, 2007, 14:28:26
The dealers website says all cars have pre-sale inspections which includes brakes. I can't believe they've worn 95% in 3 and a bit months.

I'm not going to rest until he does something to put it right, he obviously knows the history of the car because it was his wifes! He sounded so sheepish on the phone.

Title: Car needs a service
Post by: Arriba on Thursday, July 26, 2007, 14:30:48
yeah 3 months is way to quick for brake wear like you have described,if checks had been made.
just make as many threats as you can legally.
i'd go for full repairs or money back first and see what he says.
how old is the car and whats on the clock sam?

Title: Car needs a service
Post by: Samdy Gray on Thursday, July 26, 2007, 14:35:49
It's five years old, 84000 miles.

From looking at the service history, it's been reasonably well looked after and has already had the clutch replaced on 50,000 miles.

I'm also sure Peugeot have a 5year/90,000 mile clutch warranty on the 307's, so that'll be my plan B.

plus the mileage is high,so problems will crop up.
still, dont give up easily as matey obviously didn't check the brakes so i'd assume other checks were not made either

peugeots are nothing but trouble for me, well french cars in general.

I bought mine from arriva ford (weird i know being a peugeot) and it was fine and dandy untill the warranty ran out.

In 2 years i have had

Full Breaks repacement (pads/discs etc etc)
Full exhaust replacement
About to have the 2 cooland fans replaced tomorrow
Pluss other bits and bobs

We're looking about a grand in 2 years, on top of that services/mots etc, its fucking shit.

And sam they are rippying you off on the flywheel,
No more that 500 quid IIRC on my clio, still alot i know but no way £1200

Title: Car needs a service
Post by: pumbaa on Thursday, July 26, 2007, 16:44:08
That is deeply shitty sam. Garages are notortious IMO for trying to rip you off for extra work. If you can find someone reliable, I would seriously get a second opinion on what you have been told. I remember taking my old Astra to a Vauxhall dealer for a service, and almost landed up with a bill of around 1000 quid for work they deemed necessary. I took it to two separate garages for a second/third opinion, and both determined that Vauxhall were talking out of their arse on all counts. Good luck on trying to sort out the bloke who sold it though, be persistent because you have rights as the consumer. If all else fails, CAB may be the next option, and the threat of Watchdog never fails either.

The replacement flywheel story is a load of old bollocks Sam.

Flywheels don't wear out on cars, especially at that sort of mileage.

The most it will need is a new clutch cover, plate and thrust bearing.

And clutches don't wear out in 25k miles either. Not unless somebody has had their foot on the pedal all of the time.

http://www.google.co.uk/search?hl=en&q=peugeot+307+flywheel&btnG=Google+Search&meta=

It's a common problem Al, dual mass flywheel made from low grade materials so it just breaks up and warps out of shape.

Just picked the car up, doesn't actually mention anything about the flywheel on the mechanics notes . :?

The guy on the serive desk also said that the engine management fault is a Particulate Filter at a cost of £320 when:

a) I can see from past receipts that the particulate filter was replaced on 60,000 miles at a cost of £119.80

and

b) The mechanics notes say the fault is an intermittent problem with the diesel additive pump.

I'm definitely going to take it to a mate of mine for a second opinion.

Never ever pay main dealer prices if you can avoid it. I took my wheels to a garage for an oil change as its cheaper for them to do it than it is for me to buy the parts and do it myself (haven't we had this discussion somewhere else?). Anyway, they offered a free courtesy check, and quoted the following.

New drive belt - $250 fitted

New wiper blades - $50 fitted (WTF!)

Two new tyres - $300 fitted

Plus sales tax added to the above.

One trip to the Toyota dealer, a crate of beer and a hour of hard graft (total around $35) sorted the drive belt. Wiper blades $5 each, not exactly the most challenging task and two new tyres for less than $200 fitted, I saved myself a LOT of money.

To be fair it all needed doing, but always shop around, and if you're not sure, get that second opinion.

Sam,
Never, ever trust a main dealer. I was quoted £300 pounds to change the cam belt on my jeep and was assured by the bint in the service department that this was correct only to find that it is fitted with a cam chain! I took the case to trading standards and will let you know the outcome, needless to say that the dealers are shitting themselves.

extremely reliable cars and well built.

Considered the Saab 9-3 Ash? Cheaper than an A4. Only down side is the Company is now part of GM (i.e. Vauxhall). Still well built though.

I wouldn't mind an A4, but my research told me Insurance and VED is too high for my liking, so a Mazda 6 it is for me!

Took the car back to Akers this morning where I bought it from. I thought the bloke would be a complete arsehole and say sorry it's out of warranty we're not going to do anything.

Fair play to him though, he's going to put new brake pads and discs on FOC on Monday.

He wasn't so forthcoming about the flywheel problem, mainly because we can't say it really is the flywheel without stripping the gearbox down and having a look. Same stands for Peugeot really, they're just saying it's the flywheel because of a noise coming from under the bonnet. Mr Aker's was very nice though and said if the problem gets worse he'll gladly take the car in and strip the 'box down to determine the problem, again FOC.

Happy days  :D

My turn to have fun and games with my car on Monday :(

Finally goes into Shitroen to get looked at following the flooding. Its cleaned up ok and inside and outside there's not really any sign of it being flooded now. The engine etc runs fine so thats all good.....The problems seem to be restricted to the airbag warning light being on which I guess means a sensor is fucked and the battery isn't charging so that warning light comes on before the battery eventually dies which I guess means the alternator is knackered.

Dunno how much those 2 things will cost though ??  :?

Whoa

The airbag warning light will be a wet connection still

You have two connectors, one passenger side and one drivers side.

The are both underneath the respective seats, break them apart, dry them then reconnect them and its job done

Just discovered my MOT was due on June 19th...

My car will probably fail, but i'm unsure as to what is best.

Pay for it, or pay the fine if i get caught, god knows what is cheaper or more sensible, but I don't want a to buy a new car yet as i prefer my cars to die first.

Oh well, i'm going to Deutschland on Thursday. I may just bite the bullet and leave it at a garage while i'm away and hope it doesn't cost too much on my return.  :(
