Ive always found Prince a bit creepy to be honest . But it's a genious piece of marketing.
Gets all his new music to a potential 3m people, the vast majority of which would never consider buying the album. Huge media coverage about the controversy leading to higher interest in his back catalogue as well. And i understand he's playing 21 arena dates later this year, which he's now bound to sell out, whereas before he would have perhaps sold out only a handful of dates. I can't really see it becoming the norm though, perhaps a few other papers might try jumping on the bandwagon at first, but i don't think there are enough acts in Prince's position ie not really needing the money from album sales.
