Post by: oxford_fan on Thursday, June 28, 2007, 08:45:25
whilst driving to norwich yesterday afternoon i got a sudden urge to play this, particularly the "2000" incarnation.

has anyone ever played sim city 3000 or 4? these seem to be pretty popular in the mininova search results. i'm going to keep it old school for now

Used to love the 2000 game. Had a game once that went the whole distance, you know, into the year 2050 or something, and I had a ridiculous population of 400,000,000 or something.

Tried it more recently and failed miserably.

I liked the very first one on the Amiga, you could hold down SHIFT and type CASH to give yourself more money...not that I'm a cheat or anything  :D

Never played the more recent ones but 2000 was ace. Until you had to try and place underground stuff like pipes and subways anyway. That was stupidly hard to click in the right place.

I used to like Building Prisons and then putting Schools next to them. I'd pretend that they were sex offender prisons.

Build 6x6 blocks of residential/industrial/commercial areas - whatever it says people want on the little meter on the left. Surround them with roads. People won't move in if a block designated for one of these things is more than 3 squares a way from a road.

Swamp the areas with power cables (not completely) connected to your power station and you're away.

Then worry about a few water pumps and pipe them up.

Stick in the occasional Bus Depot, School, College, Park, Hospital, Prison, Police Station, etc.

This games doing my nut in. Can some-one tell me how you get started?

Title: sim city
Post by: flammableBen on Tuesday, July 3, 2007, 12:12:30
build 2 6x6 blocks of dence residential, and industrial. surround them with road so that they are next to each other.. like this (R=road, I=industrial, H=residential)

Code:

RRRRRRRRRRRRRRR
RHHHHHHRIIIIIIR
RHHHHHHRIIIIIIR
RHHHHHHRIIIIIIR
RHHHHHHRIIIIIIR
RHHHHHHRIIIIIIR
RHHHHHHRIIIIIIR
RRRRRRRRRRRRRRR

Then build a power station (if it's coal build it a little way away), and connect up the zones with power cables. You don't have to completely cover the zones but make sure the cables are connected up and running across.

This should start building up, keep doing this in 6x6 sections if you can. Otherwise remember zones won't get built on if they are unpowered or more than 3blocks away from a road or other transport (I think subway stations work aswell but you won't be building them for a while).

There's a little bar on the left which shows you how much things are in demand. You won't need that much commercial until later on, so I'd build a few blocks of light commercial here and there. You can always bulldoze it and dence it up later. The demand is also a good indicator of how much you can tax stuff. At the start I normally go for higher tax on residential than on Industrial and Commercial, Don't go too high though, and if the residential demand starts dropping loads then lower it.

Getting a bit advanced now, but that should start you off. Experiment, it's sort of the point.

The iPad (and maybe iPhone) version is a pretty much straight conversion of one of the older Sim City games, not sure which one but it's from a good few years ago (looks like the one above). I'd imagine there are similar versions for other phones and pads.

Think I got my copy for 59p - EA are always having sales on their games.

You can manually install it, the 2nd level sc2k folder is everything it copies. Just need to manually do the registry entries which is a bit of a pain.

Right. actually that bit is pretty simple. The problem then is that it won't let you load or save levels. So it might be a bit pointless.

I'm still working on it. I think it's something to do with weird read-only permissions on the cities folder. If I get anywhere I'll let you know.

If you want to manually install and play without the ability to save then...
in the zip file, there's a folder called SC2k, not the first level one, but the one at the same directory level as setup.exe. Copy just this somewhere. I went for C:\games.

Copy and paste the below into notepad. You'll have to change the directories to where you copied the SC2k dir. So it matches up. Also change your mayor name if you care.
Code:
Windows Registry Editor Version 5.00

[HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Maxis]

[HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Maxis\SimCity 2000]

[HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Maxis\SimCity 2000\Localize]

[HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Maxis\SimCity 2000\Registration]
"Mayor Name"="flammableBen"
"Company Name"="CarpCorp"

[HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Maxis\SimCity 2000\SCURK]
"CycleColors"=dword:00000001

[HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Maxis\SimCity 2000\Windows]

Save it as anythingyoulike.reg, then double click on it. Accepting all the risk warnings that windows throw at you.

once you've done that you should be able to just run the simcity.exe in wherever you unzipped the SC2k folder.

Simple eh?

Changed my mind about it being the read only settings on the folder. I think it must be because simcity2k probably uses some super old load/save dialogue box which is no longer supported.
