There's a garage in cromby street...very reputable until he sold the lease and went traveling... he has just got the lease back though cos the guys that had it ran it into the ground.
He's re-opening this week sometime. I'll post a number as soon as i can.

If they are the ones on the John Hunt site next to Simtex body shop I'b recommend, if not Dellers who use to be in old town, now out towards stratton way.

Surely if the water pump has gone you'd be best off getting the belts done at the same time.

Had the timing belt done at the 40,000 service in Feb, but will ask for a new kit to be put on anyway as they have to strip it

The cost is going to be scary

Fred, I bought a car from a place in Purton about ten years ago.  I found a few faults and they promised to sort it.  They told me to take it to a guy who was then based at the back of Kwik-Fit when it was in Manchester Road.  He did a brilliant job (obviously I wasn't paying) and I have taken my car to him ever since.  He is now called S&T and has the repair workshop in Ferndale Road, almost next door to the working men's club.  Just tell Dave I recommended you to him.

Bit of a warning lads ..DO NOT use Penton in Salisbury for any work.I was told by this garage that the cam belt on my jeep needed changing and they quoted me £265.00,being tight i checked with the local 4x4 garage and they informed me that i dont have a cam belt on my jeep its a chain! so i checked with another Suzuki dealer and they confirmed this.I have now reported Penton to trading standards and spent the money that i saved on a new set of golf clubs :beers:  do not let my other half know!

Fred, can you not just get your head skimmed or buy a reconditioned one?

My sister used a garage over Rushy Platt when her head gasket went, cost her about £250 with skimming and fitting.

Is £1500 parts and labour?

If you have the Chassis and Engine number handy I can make a call and see if I can get the parts any cheaper (Ive worked in most Parts places in town)Though to be honest its still going to be somewhere near that id expect.

OK

Picked the car up today, and the reason it needs a new head gasket is because it is leaking coolant on the front L/H/ side of the engine compartment.

This is exactly the fault that I have just spent £440.00 having a water pump fitted to cure.

Titcombes now want another £1500.00 to complete the work.

I have told them to fuck off, and that I have just spent a shitload of money and my motor is in exactly the same state as before the work was done, but my bank balance is not.

I am fucking angry

I have decided to get the work done as I really love the car, I got offered £7k trade in against an Astra SRI today, but put the two cars up against eachother and there is no comparison

Need to shop around now for someone to do the head gasket

Title: Car Help
Post by: Samdy Gray on Friday, June 8, 2007, 17:17:40
Get it fixed. but don't pay for the cost of the labour stripping it back down to the water pump.

Any decent garage would've seen the gasket had gone or at least tested for it if the water pump was broken. At that point they should have replaced the gasket at the same time the head was off.

Therefore you shouldn't have to pay labour for them to strip it down to get to the cylinder head (and you could probably also argue putting it back together as well). I'd only offer to pay for the gasket to be replaced.

I explored the other avenues that you lads had given but none could fit me in for 2-3 weeks, I use the car for work everyday (I work in Docklands), so I thought I would give my insurance company a bell, as the breakdown cover is organised by them and included in my monthly premium and, to be fair to the insurance co, they arranged everything and have been really good.
