Title: Best albums of 2004?
Post by: sonicyouth on Tuesday, December 14, 2004, 14:37:28
I've not bought many this year and these four are the only new releases I've listened to more than once or twice.

Graham Coxon - Happiness In Magazines
Kings of Convenience - Riot On An Empty Street
The Streets - A Grand Don't Come For Free
Elliott Smith - From A Basement On The Hill

Slim pickings I'm afraid :/

that's one fine list, i must say. nice to see a bit of d&b in there too, high contrast. i saw goldie on friday and he was utter bollocks at DJ'ing - shit choon selection, mixing, everything.....

i'll go for:

Razorlight
Killers
Libertines - libertines
Streets - a grand dont come for free
Dizzee Dizz - showtime
Kasabian
Beasties - to the 5 boroughs
Air - talkie walkie
Kings Of Leon
GLC - greatest hits
Skinnyman - council estate of mind
Cut Chemist - litmus test
MFTC3
Gomez - split the difference

but 2004 is the year I woke up to the sound of UK hip-hop and drum & bass

It's close between those two but March of the Beatnicks shades it for me.  A world without love and dreams on a big scale are close behind. I have butterfly concerto.

High society is a class album. Racing green is the best ee-ee yeh-eh-eh-eh-EH-err   ee-OOH ee-OOH. Safe as High Contrast's afro.  8) He is damn good live too, top bloke.

for me the best albums of the year are those by the futureheads, graham coxon, isis, 65 days of static, franz ferdinand, black keys, beastie boys, and the secret machines

thought the libertines' 2nd was mediocre, the streets went stale, the killers was weak apart from the singles and kasabian was like a fisher price "my first primal scream", but without the tinge of genius.

gonna look up that cut chemist cd...

I don't think Bloc Party are overrated, I don't buy nme or anything so I hadn't heard any hype at all about them but I saw them on Jools Holland and they were fucking superb, best band on it by far. If anything they are underrated as they haven't sold much yet but that'll probably change next year.

dead 60's

yes!

Anyone who has yet to hear them, check out the video for their latest single The Last Resort (http://www.dead60s.com/videopopup/index.php?id=900020000018893.wmv). I knew you'd know 'em mex, they played your club?

Last year I could only list 4 new albums that I enjoyed, so far this year I have seriously enjoyed the following:

The Wedding Present - Take Fountain (definitely up there with some of my favourite albums already)
Kaiser Chiefs - Employment (Blur circa The Great Escape with a more rock edge)
Bloc Party - Silent Alarm (Little Thoughts should have been on it and I don't like the remixed version of She's Hearing Voices)
Doves - Some Cities (bit hit and miss at times but there's some seriously good tracks on there)

and it's only the end of March. What albums have you lot been enjoying so far this year? Furthermore, Belle & Sebastian are releasing a boxset and this makes me very happy indeed.
