Double Dragon takes me back. punch kick punch kick, funny screaming noise when you died. Amusing fat bold bosses. Crazy stuff.

Top 5 will take some thinking for me.

hmm....

despite my apparent nerdiness, I didn't own a games console until I was about 10 or something so that rules me out of retro gaming, i think.

nevertheless...

zelda: a link to the past
cm97/98
goldeneye (four way multiplayer was awesome)
quake2 (online, of course)

i can't think of a fifth.

Atari st

Fantasy World Dizzy
Treasure Island Dizzy
Magicland Dizzy
The Human Torch And The Thing

NES

Super Mario Bros
Double Dragon II: The Revenge
Wrestlemania
Jack Nicklaus' Major Championship Golf

Just over 4000 is mine (really just over. it was like 4001 or something). I'm stupidly good at tetris. The Gamecube I got for a tenner from my mate has a gameboy player on it. Haven't got used to using a gamecube controller yet though.

Stops getting faster after 300 lines so it's more a test of endurance than anything else.

Oids on the Atari St was one I forgot. That was Super Ace.

On the BBC apart from chuckie egg there was Space Adventure which was fun, Dare Devil Dennis which was genius and a few others which I'll have to think about. That was a long time ago and I was well little.

match day 2 (spectrum + 2)
kick off 2 (amiga)
mike tysons punch out (nes)
renegade (spectrum)
yie ar kung-fu (bbc micro)

might as well add GRANNY'S GARDEN on the bbc micro too for anyone who went to primary school in the early to mid 80's

my favourite memory of retro gaming was one night waiting 55 minutes for the evil dead game to load...there was a count down on the screen and no word of a lie with just 4 seconds remaining (my sister and me eyes fixed on the screen ) there was a flash of lightning from the storm brewing outside and the whole street went out with a power cut.

was fucking gutted.

even more so when we loaded it the next day and it was shite :-))(

Ah the old primary school BBC's....I remember a game on them at school. It was called hide and squeak or summat like that, you had to find a mouse that was hidden somewhere in a house.

No the original sensible was immense, a real game of skill as if you tried running with the ball and changing direction you would always lose it.

Rainbow Island was also mint.

I browse the underdogs forums for time to time. underdogs - the bird who owns the site, has pretty much left it for nearly a year and a half now. Think she still pays the bills to keep it going but is too busy with political stuff in her native Thailand to actively update it.

I would say try Abandonia but that seems to be playing up too. Sketchy.

Searching the forums of retroremakes.com will probably throw up some remakes of most good old games.

I miss a time where games were more about hitting the zone with the joystick and pulling off a sublime set of manoeuvres just to keep on going to see the next level. Dieing and then playing through it all again, but better so you'll have more lives/health when you face the bit which you defeated you. Not like now where it's all about scraping through to the next save point.

Saying that, if you want to play a retro-style game (which does have save points) then you can't go much wrong with Cave Story. http://www.miraigamer.net/cavestory/

Crazy fun platformer

Just buy yourself a cheap PC controller from somewhere and then use emulators to play all the old games you want. Most NES roms are smaller than an average Stunners World Cup page to download.

I'll link people up if you can't find what you need. Google search should do the trick though.

You can download emulators with all the games ever released for the consoles as one file. For eg. 5 snes emulators plus 758 game roms. I had nes, snes, gameboy, master system, megadrive emulators with every release... Also i bought a usb adaptor and just use a ps2 pad to play the games. I lost all of them though on my old pc

if you can get hold of an old xbox pad, an old usb cable you don't need, some scissors and some sort of sellotape then you can convert it yourself.

http://www.fury-tech.com/en/Guides/Xbox-Controller-PC-Conversion-Mod

Tis what I did and although it's not the best of gamepads, it's not too bad. The rumble works and it's got enough buttons to keep you sorted for all your emulation needs. Up to N64 and PS is about as far as I go. You need a monster computer to do ps2.

Otherwise search yourself you lazy cunt.

4) Rainbow Islands
5) International Karate +

I also have fond memories of James Pond and Sensi Soccer.

I remember buying pirate versions of all Amiga Games down the market at Greenbridge, £2 per disk i think it was. Monkey island was actually cheaper to buy the proper copy because it had 12 disks.

I remember the day my old man bought me my Amiga, happy 11th bday that was, it cost £500!

The original Railway Tycoon on the old Amiga 1200 was ace. Virtual Pool was another good one on the amiga. I also had a footie game for the Amiga but can't for the life of me remember what it was called, but I do know Accy Stanley were on the game.

After the Amiga I had a Master System II with Alex the Kid built in, what a game!! I had Terminator v Robocop for the Master System II.

For pure old school footie manager game it has to be Champ Manager 94 where you have to enter the results from a certain page of the manual to be able to load the game.

super off road on a 086 pc 5 1/4 floppy - used to fight with my brothers over whose go it was. And super mario on the gameboy - completing it twice in a row so you could go through super quick with 99 lives  - trying to go through as many times as you could before the batteries ran out.

also - micro machines on the PS1 - still way too quick when you're pissed and can't remember the tracks.

An atari what? old skool, computer or jaguar.

Also Super Mario on the Snes and Gameboy are different games.

I stuggle with Goldeneye being retro, but perfect dark is pushing it. I know it's the same system but it was released this decade.

Deus Ex was released the same year as Perfect Dark and it scares me to think of that as retro. Brilliant game though. Deus Ex was released a year before 9/11 yet interestingly the whole plot line is about an American government setting up disasters to claim greater power. They just set it 30 years to far into the future.

I reckon I'd have a good shout at completing that from memory. That site's download seems a bit small though. I'm guessing it doesn't include the speech. Which would be the best part.

I'll think about sorting out a CD rip if I can find my copy and Sonic and Whits don't mind me posting it.

Terry Pratchett agreed to allow ScummVM (http://www.scummvm.org/) to support it and possibly let people download it for free. Think they've hit a dead end getting hold of the source code though.

Yes do it Ben. Discworld's a great game. I don't have the original anymore just the sequel.

I'll look for it tomorrow. The voice credits would make you watch a tv show, yet alone play a computer game.

Discworld voice cast includes...

Eric Idle
Jon Pertwee (must have been one of the last things he died, RIP)
Tony Robinson
Rob Brydon

I need to find it now.

Yeah its genius. So much effort put into that script. Have you ever played the later Discworlds... umm... think theres one called Discworld Noir. I havent played it. Just wandering what its like. Also the Broken Sword series I remember being damn good

Had Discwolrd Noir and lost it. It's more serious, but story and puzzle wise possible one of the greatest adventure games ever. You play the detective and use clues you've jotted down in you notepad to interact with characters. It works quite well.

It does fuck up Vimes' character a bit, but it's forgiveable, just

I'd like to get hold of it again to be fair. It's pretty good.

I've definitely got Discworld II, I played through it not so long ago. You can do an ace thing with a stone circle where Rincewind has a conversation with himself from the first Discworld game.

I just remember them being insanely hard in places. But then again, a mate who was well into the books seemed to piss the game. I don't know if that would actually help matters.

Simon the Sorcerer was another ace one. Fuck knows who did the speech (for the PC versions), but it was pretty fun. Both 1 and 2.

I think I can definitely find them. I'm still unsure where discworld could be. It might be quicker to find a decent download and share it with you.

Yeah that'll be cool. I'm guessing it'll have to be run using a windows 95 emulator type thing.

looks like a good bet if you're ok setting up dosbox. Can be a bit of a mission but there are enough guides around. I'd check that it's the latest version of DosBox they're putting in with the download. The newer one (0.70) is stupidly faster than the older ones.

I'm going to look for my proper cd copy, otherwise I'll download this.

cool. I had dosbox recently as i wanted to play FW Dizzy. It took awhile to initially work out and was a bit of a headfuck... i'd rather get cd rip i think. I'll have a look a bit further afield tomorrow

Right.

Adventure game wise, I can probably cd image, both simon the sorcerers and discworld II.

If you want some instant speech enhanced adventure game action then Beneath a Steal Sky has been released as freeware. You can get it and download stuff which will play it in windows at http://www.scummvm.org/.

And to be fair Beneath a Steal Sky is pretty good. I bought it for a tenner back in the day.

You'll probably need to use dosbox even with a proper cd image. Windows XP is terrible with old Dos Games.

it's probably dosbox, it's that or the vdmsound thing which tricks windows into understanding the sound card.

That ScummVM I linked you to is brilliant for playing simon the sorcerer, monkey island , beneath a steal sky (which you can download for free.) Hasn't got Discworls support yet.
