Title: Swindon Town vs Stockport County - Official Guff Thread
Post by: magic8ball on Saturday, March 3, 2007, 10:02:09
Is Westwood available for selection today, or is he injured?

I'd settle for a draw today, but if the players pull their socks up, a win is definitely possible.

They have won 8 on the bounce, without conceding a goal. So an early goal for us should make it nice and interesting.

Cock and Sturrock up front. Roberts on the right, Brown left. Weston and Timling in the middle. Westwood and Ifil centre backs and Smith Vincent full backs.

Come and indeed on.

Seein as they are on a roll and havnt conceeded for so long i have put town to win on my accumulator for some strange reason! ah well with our team i think we're more than capable escaping with 3pts. BUT this is Swindon and we may jst roll over and die but we shall see

Westwood is in the squad for today.

Wouldn't be surprised if Sturrock drops Nicho, puts Vincent back wide and Westwood in the centre.

But he'll probably keep it as it was, as he doesn't like to change a winning side.

1.0 Town.

Pitch is extremely boggy in the middle so sturrock has picked team that should be up for a scrappy game - other than Roberts !!

Assume Roberts is going to play on the left of Mid replacing Zabouub

5-2 with Sabin and Invincibile on the scoresheet....   :D

We need to get back on track as since we've had a shot at going top we've gone off the boil....  are any commentary links working?  Am stuck writing an essay on The Tempest so Ed Hadwin's ramblings would make for some good background noise!

Noubissie holding midfield with Timlin the play maker?  How did Weston play at Barnet?

Big gamble perhapson  Sturrock's part, but Stockport's scouting reports probably won't mean much.

Roberts on the left?!

Title: Swindon Town vs Stockport County - Official Guff Thread
Post by: DiV on Saturday, March 3, 2007, 14:54:20
I think it will be Roberts on the left.

I dont think Sturrock will be going with 3 central midfield with Shakes included.

It looks 4-4-2 to me. I cant see him going Shakes, Noubisse and Timlin as a central 3 with Sturrock and Roberts as the wide strikers and Peacock down the middle.

Altohugh with the players he could go with Peacock and Noubisse in the middle and Timlin left...with Roberts and Sturrock upfront.

Surprised Roberts even got picked tbh!

Title: Swindon Town vs Stockport County - Official Guff Thread
Post by: walrus on Saturday, March 3, 2007, 14:55:35
You've got to have Roberts for that bit of spark though....  No one else in the team, with the possible exception of the revitalised Shakes (maybe I'm being nice), has the ability to scare opposition defences.  He's a luxury player - I don't mind him on the pitch for 89 minutes with his hands on his hips looking disinterested as long as he produces something.  When he doesn't score/create, people get on his back.

P.s.:  Could someone PM me the commentary link pleeze?  I deleted all my PM's by accident.

Peacock in midfield
Roberts on the left
Brown on the right

how have we gone for a top of the table side to a steaming pile of league two shite.

May sound like a knee jerk reaction but im starting to lose pateince with Sturrock.

His dealings in the transfer market have been dodgy at best, his tactics have been fucking shit. He changes it too much too often and it never fucking works.

I would have bet my house on Andy King taking over from Wise and still managing to get us promoted.

Yet we've got worse.

It does look decidedly bad at the moment.

We haven't played consistently well all season, when lets face it, this division is very poor.

We need changes. Simple.

Timlin's young so he's not going to be totally consistent, Zaaboub's run hot and cold since he arrived. Since his early appearances he's done little to suggest he was worth the 18 month contract.

We've got 27 registered squad players (i.e. they have a squad number)

Seven of those are injured, suspended, out on loan or frozen out (Brezovan, Ifil, Williams, Whalley, Evans, Holgate, Caton)

We've basically got 20 players for the next few games...

Bad form and a loss of confidence is one thing. Injuries to Evans and Williams have not helped because we have no strength in depth.

But unfathomable formations and a lack of players - well ones able to come on and change things for a plan B must be put on Sturrocks shoulders. His decisions to get rid of players, his game plans.

I have every confidence that with the right players (his players) he will get us up. But these aren't his players and they don't seem to be able to play his way.

Have I missed something?

Was Nicho injured or suspended?

Why was Westwood, who couldn't have trained with the team, chosen to start?

I've been one of Sturrocks staunchest supporters, but that game sounded like a triumph for tactical ineptitude..

If the commentators couldn't work out the formation(s) the team were supposed to be adopting, how the fuck were the players supposed to?

I wonder how much of this dip in form can be linked with the talks (Or lack of) concerning new contracts?

What a fucking disappointment............

I'd generally agree....and no they arent his players. Yet early season shows that despite not being his players they are (were?) more than capable of getting results in this league.

The radio and Sturrock keep claiming, our achillies heel is set pieces and has been all season. Well I for one dont remember us conceding sloopy set pieces when Wise was in charge? I cant be the only one of this opinion.

We dont look as organized and once Sturrock has done his magical change everything the players sometimes dont look like they know what they are doing. Something Wise never did. A player knew their position and they played that position.

We've got worse, I know there was alot of talk pre-season about Wise' training methods and fitness methods. I expect Sturrock has dis-regarded all of them because he is much more old school.

Sturrock took over the best squad in the league, one that was clearly going place and looked solid.

He's slowly let players go and we've got worse, we play worse and we dont look as solid.

It might be knee jerk, but if he cant get us promoted with the squad he inherited...then some serious questions needs to be ask. Mainly what the fucking hell happened?

TBH we are going to struggle to go up this season, i think hartelpool and walsall will definitley go up, playoffs is the best we can hope for and i wouldn't be confident going into them considering our lack of firepower.

I think we need to go back to basics. I know Sturrock wants the team to play his way, because in the long run that will see us supposedly rise up the league a lot easier. But with few games left if we grind out the basics over and over we will fair better imo.

Our next 6 games (apart from Accrington) don't inspire me with confidence either.

Accrington (H) should win
Grimsby (A). Don't fancy anything from this
Lincoln (A). They are stuttering as well, draw
Shrewsbury (H). They are playing well and have games in hand that could get them in the playoffs.
Rochdale (A). Good run, don't fancy this midweek
Hereford (A). Don't fancy anything from this.

He's shifted players out and frozen others out, so in that respect he is to blame. The players he's bought in have been mostly disappointing.

Biggest problem has been losing Ady and Evans, both leaders on the field.  Losing Peacock for a few games didn't help either.  Absolutely rignt about lack of old heads on the field.

Title: Swindon Town vs Stockport County - Official Guff Thread
Post by: sonic youth on Saturday, March 3, 2007, 17:48:30
Zaaboub - inconsistent, form has dipped dramatically since the new year.
Timlin - incosistent, often drifts out of games.
Sturrock - only seen him once but hasn't had a huge impact on the side, not the goalscorer we require to attain promotion.
Noubissie - not seen him yet, supposedly a right-back but played in midfield so far?

Wise bought in some excellent players - Brezovan, Smith, Williams, Evans - and some useful squad players - Vincent, Weston - as well as improving the form of players who were already at the club - Roberts, Shakes, Ifil. Of course, it's easier to bring players in at the start of the season but not one of the players Sturrock has signed would get into our team at the start of the season.

We're moving backwards, players who were playing well earlier this season have become anonymous, squad/reserve players who provide competition have been moved on and players have been frozen out.

It worries me, we're slipping down the table as the season draws to an end. If we go into the play-offs in this sort of form then we're going to be looking forward to an away trip to Dagenham and Redbridge next year.

Keeping the same back four as last Saturday would have made sense.  Dropping Roberts to the bench would also have made sense.   Keeping Timlin in the holding position would also have made sense.  Starting eleven against Bristol Rovers will be interesting.

Timlin has as many good games as bad.

Zaboub is (As you mentioned in a previous thread) our most creative player.

Sturrock. IMO better than what we had (Brownlie and onion bhaji)

Westwood. After 1 game? Give him a chance to train with the team!

Keeping the same back four as last Saturday would have made sense.

Changing the back four was absolutely absurd, they kept a clean sheet last weekend and Ifil was immense.

How many games will Ifill be out for?

2 for the red card
he is also on 9 yellows, get one more and thats another 2 game ban

so probably 4 out of the last 11

Just back from the game, we were poor all game.  Westwood looked like he had potential although he looked knackered after 20mins and he seemed to duck under the ball for the third goal.

Noubissie had a reasonable game until it came to passing when he struggled to find a man in red on a regular basis.

The second goal was a bit unlucky as i think jerel headed a clearance against westwood and it just dropped nicely for Elding.  Elding was a cock all game giving it the gestures to the away fans.

My motm would go to peacock purely for his hard work rather than any particular quality play.

Shakes and roberts were both poor in the first half, roberts was totally in the pocket of there right back and it took an hour for him to be switched to the right hand side.  Brown looked ok when he came on but compared to shakes that wasnt hard.

Jerel prob had to go, bit of a pointless lunge.  Im not convinced he saved a certain goal by it and we were already 2 down and not really looking like scoring.

All in all very poor

fuck off Ian Longdon

"what a load of rubbish" in response to someone's text. Utter cock.

The text said that our board were literally forcing our players to lose.

So Ian's right, utter rubbish and if you disagree with that then you're the cock, I don't think this board has the clubs interests at heart but fuck me what a ridiculuos suggestion.

Agreed Andy. Westwood seemed off the pace/unfit so fuck knows why he was put in having only coming to us yesterday.
There is little we got from that game, partly other than Noubissie guy who put himself about in the middle of the park (although couldnt pass) Timlin and Peacock giving what they could (Peacs looked injured at the end).
They were just hungrier for it, and that was shown at the end with their celebrations. it meant more to them than it did to us.

I looked at the line-up today and thought it wasn't good enough.

I think it's also time for fans to stop hoping that Blair Sturrock will do the business - he's showed effort but he won't score enough goals (same as Peacock and Roberts). I'll put money on that.

You what? Westwood was possibly the worst defender I have ever seen and I include people such as richard dryden in that conclusion. He didn't open his mouth once, didn't win one header all game and generally had no footballing ability. We've landed a shit player with personal problems, a big well done to Mr Sturrock.

As for the match it was shit and all the players were shit, the stadium was shit, the pitch was shit and all in all it was just SHIT!

The biggest shit was sturrock though, his tactics were wrong, the substitutions were worst and his choice of players was laughable. See he's now frozen Weston out by the look of it. I don't rate Sturrock at all, this isn't a rash decision I said similar the other week, he makes Andy King look sane. Was speaking to a Sheff wed fan on the train home, it appears they only liked him as a man, but didn't think he was a very good manager. Apparently he used to play a left winger on the right wing there and vice versa....where does that sound familiar.

He said he'd make big changes after the Barnet game and didn't so I doubt he'll keep his word and play them in the reserve game!

Longdon's job isn't to pass judgment on what anyone has to say, especially considering his refusal to discuss any non-football related issues on the phone-in yesterday evening.

I think it's a crock of shit as well but it pisses me off that a man who tries to distance himself from boardroom matter on a show which allows Town fans a rare platform to speak publicly on their views then rubbishes others views.

Agree. Sonic.

Longden is lame.

Ed's got some balls as has Shaun (within their remit of being objective but not completely pissing the club off so they can't get interviews any more).

glos_robin got it pretty much spot on. 3 hours each way, got trashed 3-0 and not one of the players were up to the standard needed.

One thing pissed me off almost as much as the result...the reaction Brown got when he came onto the pitch. He got the biggest cheer of the day, everyone around me clapped him onto the pitch, and not just a normal quick round of applause a fucking standing ovation! What's that about for christs sake!? Two weeks ago he told us to fuck off and called us all wankers, but now he's 'apologised' (if you believe the drivel on the OS) and has recieved death threats, all is forgiven? Either our fans have very short memories or are the most gullible bunch of idiots about.

Swindon Town FC - We can have a positive season where we win more games than we lose and we're still a total mess!

Sturrock gets tactics wrong - fair enough. But his track record cannot be ignored. He got Plymouth and Sheff Wed out of lower divisions... Sure, that doesn't automatically mean he will do the business here.

Simple fact is that Sturrock doesn't seem to rate the majority of the players he's inherited one bit. Is there a possibility he's losing the dressing room?

Whether we go up or stay in L2, there will be loads of changes.

I rate Sturrock and feel he will move us forward... I just hope it's this season!

I was going to mention that but it would of just added to my rant. I made a point of putting my arms behind my back and turning my back on him. I couldn't believe he got a standing ovation, other than be a total cunt what has he done this season.

Can we make big changes in the summer? I severely doubt it, I've said elsewhere that I think the board will do more cost cutting in the summer which didn't happen this season due to Power being around. I think we could be in an even weaker position next season so like it or not Mr Sturrock should be making sure these players get us out of this league. He might not rate our players but I don't rate him based on the mess he's got us into. We were almost 20 points inside the play-off zone before, what are we now about 7? If things don't pick up quick we'll miss the play-offs too!

Looking forward to Lincoln on the tele!  :|

I think Accrington Stanley next week will be make or break when deciding whether our season is going to end in tears.

Because frankly we're still in an "okay" position. Not ideal but okay to recover from.

Another negative to pick up on...the Bovril. £1.40, it was cold and the weakest I've had all season...cunts.

I had a bovril and a hotdog = £4.10 wasn't impressed.

Couldn't believe the seating arrangements either was the worst view and away experience of the season

I HATE LEAGUE 2!!

rubbish obscured view in away end & peat bog pitch. what a gutless performance - barnet part 2.

we now have a threadbare squad - lightweight midfield & a strikeforce that couldnt score if there life depended on it.

the big thing for me is none of the squad has improved under sturrock & some players seem to being going backwards ... sort it out

Cost cutting will occur, expect youth teamers and eighteen pros. with experience  max.  Bonus will not be like this season.  Finally, I don't think we are going up, unless a striker is brought in on loan who knows how to score.  Given that getting a player like that is next to impossible unless Carson tearfully begs Sir Alec for someone, we need a miracle, such as converting a defender to a striker, who didn't know he was a striker.  This is the sort of think A.K. used to try.

Sir Alec, the chairman, manager and the defensive coach are all Scots, can't you lend us a future star and pay his wages?
