Title: Si Pi Comp info please Post by: magicroundabout on Thursday, February 22, 2007, 16:30:47 not sure if you know much about x64bit operating systems but i've just purchased XP Pro x64bit and was wondering if i can still run 32bit programs?
Like my McAfee is only 32bit. i assumed it would work ok but not sure now Title: Si Pi Comp info please Post by: Bushey Boy on Thursday, February 22, 2007, 16:34:08 mate do not ask si about computers, seriously dont do it
Title: Si Pi Comp info please Post by: magicroundabout on Thursday, February 22, 2007, 16:34:56 i did read your comments about him and fixing computers.
maybe your right Title: Si Pi Comp info please Post by: Simon Pieman on Thursday, February 22, 2007, 16:43:01 32bit applications should run ok, your only issues will probably come from windows explorer extensions with 32 bit software e.g. if a 32 bit software program has a context menu (when you right click on a file).
So I think it will work, but you might get an issue if you want to right click on a file and select "scan with McAfee" from the menu. There are ways to fix this I believe and if you're lucky it won't either be an issue or McAfee will have patched it. If not a registry edit should get around the problem. Title: Si Pi Comp info please Post by: magicroundabout on Thursday, February 22, 2007, 16:51:26 cheers Si.
Was toying with the idea of Vista but i'll wait a while yet until they sort the bug fixes etc. x64 should speed up my system too. Especially now as i have 4gig 667mhz ram running though it Title: Si Pi Comp info please Post by: Simon Pieman on Thursday, February 22, 2007, 16:53:38 Any problems PM me and I'll find a fix.
I'm looking to build a dual processor machine soon as well, so it'll be interesting. Title: Si Pi Comp info please Post by: magicroundabout on Thursday, February 22, 2007, 16:56:04 i've noticed you can now buy quad processors
with an 8meg cache Title: Si Pi Comp info please Post by: Simon Pieman on Thursday, February 22, 2007, 17:00:00 Yeah, bit heavy, but then at least dual core is coming down in price.

If you don't know right click on my computer and select properties. It should tell you your spec in the bottom of the window that pops up. In the meantime scan for spyware/adware/viruses and defragment your hard drive. Title: Si Pi Comp info please Post by: Chubbs on Thursday, February 22, 2007, 18:47:56 in addition to si's answer it also depends what processes/applications you have running, i found with 256mb ram i had to close down all my processes, i couldnt user WMP or MSN at the same time, since upgrading to a GIG of ram i can do all 3 at a comfortable speed.

Pentium 4, 2.80 GHz, 512 MB of RAM (this means nothing to me) How much does more RAM cost, worth it? is it easy to put in? Title: Si Pi Comp info please Post by: Samdy Gray on Thursday, February 22, 2007, 18:56:44 Quote from: "The Moonraker" How much does more RAM cost, worth it? is it easy to put in? For another 512mb your looking at about £50 depending on where you go. It's piss easy to install, just pop the lid off the PC, whack the RAM into the motherboard and that's it! Title: Si Pi Comp info please Post by: Frigby Daser on Thursday, February 22, 2007, 18:58:59 Quote PC Worlds site has 256 (so I'd get two) going for £8 - anything wrong with them? Well you have 512mb already. If you only have 2 slots for memory then 2 x 256mb = 512mb i.e. no point. If you have more slots for memory it could be worth a punt, but you need to make sure you can mix speeds etc. Use that Crucial tool to help you find this out. Title: Si Pi Comp info please Post by: Simon Pieman on Thursday, February 22, 2007, 18:59:19 RAM is quite cheap. But you need Bushey's plumber to put it in (actually you only need him to take the panels off the laptop, hey ho)
Depends on what PC you have. Go to http://www.crucial.com/uk/?gclid=CM_Iou7TwooCFSGZEAodVy0agw use the tool to see what memory type you need and what your machine can handle. The memory should come with instructions how to fit it, but it's always best to look at you manual to see wherebouts the slots for it are (something that Bushey didn't have). Title: Si Pi Comp info please Post by: Frigby Daser on Thursday, February 22, 2007, 19:04:06 how did you edit my post?! cheers anyway!
Title: Si Pi Comp info please Post by: flammableBen on Thursday, February 22, 2007, 19:09:14 I could to with upgrading my hacked together 550mhz, 384mb ram, 64mb Geforce(fuck knows which one I can't remember). Which started off life around the year 2000 and has none of the original parts remaining, not even the case. Crazy days.
It's not top priority though, and to be honest I'm quite fond of the old thing. Title: Si Pi Comp info please Post by: blinkpip on Thursday, February 22, 2007, 20:07:40 It's says mine can run 2GB of ram. Will it double my speed of my PC? Or will I not notice much difference? I have 512mb.
Title: Si Pi Comp info please Post by: Simon Pieman on Thursday, February 22, 2007, 20:09:55 That would speed up your pc loads pip.
I've upgraded my laptop from 512mb to 1gb and it's sped it up. But now my hard drive hasn't much room on it it's slowed down again. Memory isn't the only thing that will speed your pc up. It just means that the computer can handle more things at once without having to temporarily write them to the hard drive (page file) Title: Si Pi Comp info please Post by: blinkpip on Thursday, February 22, 2007, 20:12:11 Also, that site. Is it 100% correct on which ram they say you should buy. I mean the ram they recommend, does it have the right type, pins module. Isn't there 3 different pins types of ram?
Title: Si Pi Comp info please Post by: Simon Pieman on Thursday, February 22, 2007, 20:22:04 It's 100% right if you have got the right model of computer
