Post by: strooood on Wednesday, February 7, 2007, 11:57:57 right XP is famed/sold on having really quick startup times. mine takes literally about 5 fucking minutes... what could this be? my startup list is blank, so apparently it must be services whatever that means.
checked my task manager, (my computer is slow and struggling but the CPU usage is never above 50-60%) and there's loads of these svchost.exe i'm not really sure what these are apparently they host services or some bollocks. shall i just leave these? also one final thing, my spybot wont let me scan because i need an update but then i click update and it says my program is fully updated. i might just give up and get an abacus. At startup, Svchost.exe checks the services part of the registry to construct a list of services that it must load. Multiple instances of Svchost.exe can run at the same time. Each Svchost.exe session can contain a grouping of services. Therefore, separate services can run, depending on how and where Svchost.exe is started. This grouping of services permits better control and easier debugging
what progs have you running when starting up like anti virus firewall etc mine whent slow untill i removed a firewall prog i had and installed another and was sweet. Sometimes if you havnt un-installed a programme correctly and it used to start up with windows, windows will try and locate it. Title: More comp help if you would simon... so you don't need to panic if you see a few in task manager When did the prob happen what did you do. Did it start getting slower over time or overnight. Go Start > Run > Type 'msconfig' > ok From the window it opens, click the Start Up tab. This shows all the registry keys for start up applications. Disable the ones you don't need, If you want you can disable all of them but if you've got stuff like anti-virus I'd reccomend you leave that there. Alternatively, if you downloaded CCleaner the last time you asked for help, open it up, click Tools > Startup and then you can delete the actualy registry entry permanently. Short of what's been suggested before there's not really much else you can do. More RAM will probably not help windows boot faster btw and will invalidate your warranty unless you get your manufacturer (or an approved dealer) to upgrade it.
