Title: Hard Drives
Post by: Rossi on Thursday, March 3, 2005, 18:40:23
I just ordered this for my computer (http://www.ebuyer.com/customer/products/index.html?rb=5498630681&action=c2hvd19wcm9kdWN0X292ZXJ2aWV3&product_uid=32012) but I'm not 100% sure how to put it in?
I think I have the available cables in  the back of the computer (http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v206/grahamtilidie/cable_things.jpg) but someone said that I have to set it to the slave drive or something by changing the plugs on the back of the connection or something? If anyone knows about this can they elaborate please

If you are only going to have the one hard drive in your pc, you will need to set it to master.  If you have two, one will need to be master and one will need to be slave.

You can adjust the master/slave by looking at the back of the hd, you'll find a row like this :::: with a plastic cap probably over one of the :'s.  Consult the manual that came with your hd (sometimes it will show you on the hd itself) to find out where the plastic cap needs to be positioned in order to set that hd as master or slave

It is dead easy to whack a hard drive in, open up pc, find the loose socket (providing u havent filled it up with cd, dvd etc)

Whack that in back, set to primary if it your only hdd or slave if it a back up/ secondary one

Then whack the case back on

whack the pc on

whack porn on hard drive

whack off

Whits might be away but i can help with this.

The hardrive you have in the pic is an internal one. its very straight forward.

flip open case. look for lead going into current hardrive. If it's a replacement just put the new one where the old one is. then you will have to reinstall windows. pop cd in and follow on screen instructions.

If its a second harddrive,  then first pull out your current hardrive and look at the jumper pins on the back where you plug the power and ide cable into. make sure the jumper is set across the correct pins telling the pc the harddrive is master, this is nearly always shown in a diagram on the back of the drive. Sometimes displayed in the disgram as MA,SL, CS, or somthing similar to that. MA being master, SL being slave and CS being cable select.

Once set to master, set pin jumper on new drive as slave, then connect drives to motherboard using the ide cable. Normally colour coded in the following with blue, grey and black plugs on the cable. Blue will plug into the motherboard, grey into your new drive or drive set to slave, and black into your old drive or drive set to master.

Once its all connected as described, ensure you have power going to both drives and turn on.

I will assume you are running XP, so once PC is on, you will notice it will not be displayed in "my computer". This is because the harddrive needs formatting to become active. Right click "my computer", then click on "manage", click "disk management".

In the right hand pain all your drives and drive letters will be listed. You will also see your new drive with no assigned letter or partitions. Right click it and choose options to format the drive and make it active. I can not remember the exact options here but it is very straight forward. You can also highlight the drive in the list and click "action" in the title bar and follow options through there.

looking at his picture though it doesn't look like there is room to add a second internal HDD. thats why i suggested getting an external case for it.

my dell only has space for 1 HDD so i have to buy an external case for it.

I intend to have it as a 2nd internal hard drive. I'm sure it will fit, because at the end of the day it doesn't matter if it's just dangling around by the wires does it?

  I didn't look at the picture of his PC!

You can get bolt on bays and stuff, they're often pretty shit, but you could just leave it loose in the case. Just make sure that if it can move around, that it isn't going to cause any problems. also make sure the hardrive is at least partially secure as some are piss poor when it comes to getting knocks.

Like magicrounbabout said though, you could get an external case, they sell them on ebuyer for about £30. Only downside to this is that it will need to be ran through usb2 or firewire. pref usb2.if you don't have usb 2 or firewire it is not even worth considering unless you are just using it for backup and are not fussed by the unbelievably slow transfer speeds.

is that a dell 2400???

or just a dell minitower??? or not even dell at all???

i have the same and have no room to add a second internal harddrive.

best thing for you is to buy a case from scan computers (link in other reply). make sure it's a PATA 3.5" casing with USB 2.
then your harddrive will fit in there a treat.

is it just to be used for music/games etc???
