OUT of favour Gareth Whalley admits he has “no idea” why Paul Sturrock has written off his County Ground career but insists he isn’t about to gamble on his family’s future.

With less than a week to sort out a new club, before the transfer window closes, Town’s midfielder revealed he is prepared to dig his heels in and sit out his remaining season and half contract, even if it means waving goodbye to his career.

Whalley, 33, was told by boss Sturrock he would not kick a ball for Town again and, despite believing he could still do a job for the League Two outfit, admits it is ‘highly unlikely’ the former Plymouth man would change his view.

Whalley revealed his agent was busy trying to find him a new club before the January window closes but, having missed a lot of the campaign through injury, the ex-Crewe midfielder concedes there has been a notable lack of suitors.

Town have already made an offer to pay off his contract but, deeming it ‘unsatisfactory, Whalley insisted he wasn’t about to leave himself unemployed with no other job to go to.

Whalley, pictured right, said: “I had a meeting with the boss soon after he arrived and he told me I didn’t have a future here.

“I have no idea why, but these things happen in football.

“Ideally I want to be playing and certainly it would be less than ideal for the club or myself if I had to see out the rest of my contract here without playing.

“I have to look after myself and my family and do what is best for us. I have a season and a half left and I don’t want to be walking into the job market.

“I am not about to just walk away from my job because it would be a massive gamble I am not prepared to take.”

Whalley arrived in Swindon in July 2005, having helped Wigan reach the Premier League the previous season, and made 27 appearances for the Robins the following campaign.

An ankle injury ruined his pre-season this time round, with surgery keeping him up until October and has only made two appearances in so far this term.

He played 65 minutes of the reserves’ defeat to Cardiff on Tuesday but concedes he is not expecting to get into Sturrock’s good books.

He said: “Ideally for everyone I need another club. But because of my injuries clubs seem reluctant to take me.

“They think I might need a few games to regain full fitness.

“I believe I could still do a job for Swindon but I can’t see that happening now.

“It is a frustrating time, but I wouldn’t say it is desperation just yet because of the time I do have left on my contract.”

I am assuming this is what happened:

Sturrock says: "I'm never going to pick you again laddy" or something.

Whalley tries to find another club but cannot find one. Due partly, I would imagine, to the fact that he is not match fit as he has not been playing games because Sturrock has said he's never going to pick him.

The club offer him a pay off which is less than what he would have earned had he stayed under contract.

Now he is supposed to be saying, "Thanks for throwing me on the scrap heap and offering me less than the value of my contract to fuck off. I accept your generous offer and will gladly seek employment at my local chicken stuffing factory getting paid minimum wage!"

The club offered a long contract to get a player to the club. It didn't work out. It happens. It's no one's fault.

I totally endorse the sentiments of this post. I like that you have imagined the words that Gareth Whalley would  have used (especially the"Oooooh" bit) and that and in your later post have Paul Sturrock using the phrase "Laddy" . I also like the use of swearing in capital letters.

Do you have a date set contract with your work? if you did then you would be well within your rights to make the company honour that contract unless you did someting to actively compell your employer to sack you, thus forfeiting any rights you have to your contract.

As it happens most 'regular' peoples working contracts (full time basis) do not have a time scale placed on them but instead are simply open ended and thus able to be ended at any given time (barring due notice provided by employee or employer to terminate that contract as per any agreement made).

Whalley has openly stated he wants to get his head down and play football for us if he is allowed and he DOES have a contract that states he will stay until a set time....so why in any sane persons mind would anyone settle for a third of the money to go away and not to the job they love without a good to strong prospect of a future job???

Yes actually I do. My contract currently runs until March 3rd (after two extensions), However, written into the contract is a 1 weeks notice period, meaning i can be "let go" at any time with 5 working days notice.

Assuming he was on £1k a week and the club offered to pay half his contract, thats a £39k lump sum. should be enough to keep him out of the chicken factory for a week or two

Yes, quite easily. That's only £2k a week average for ten years. He's been a pro for over ten years and has played at a high level for most of that time with Bradford in the Prem and also Crewe and Wigan in the Champioship.

To be fair it's safe to make a decent assumption of his wage at STFC but not for the past.

I don't rate him and was only impressed with him at Port Vale last season. That's one game.

The point about the amount of money he has earned is a valid one, if we were talking about Phil smith here i'd have much more sympathy as I doubt hes any richer than half of the people on here.

As for his sideways passing, clearly retaining possesion can be very important in a game.  The trouble comes when it happens to be the players only discernable skill, as he cant run, tackle or shoot. Now go and make his dinner or something

Must be difficult to attract a new club when he isn't even playing in the reserves.

Sturrock has stated that he won't put Whalley in the stiffs cos it would hamper the youth players advancement.

So, he's not going to be pick for the first team and he's not going to be picked for the reserves.

So he'll see out his contract, cos no club's gonna come in for him.
