Title: Swindon Town FC fans and others
Post by: Bartek on Monday, December 18, 2006, 13:49:58
Guys I am wondering if you have any 'friends' abroad and in England as well...I mean if your organization of fans is connected with for example organization of fans from other clubs...

I guess you hate 'Bristol City' fans , but which fans of team are friendly with you ?

i've always thought that 'the moonrakers' is an underused nickname for us, although haven't they got the idea behind it wrong on that survey? i thought it was to do with smuggling.

we're very friendly with gillingham.

it was smuggling, as the story goes the locals hid their contraband in a lake and when the fuzz turned up, acted dumb and said they were "moonraking."

What's with the Wycombe/Colchester rivalry? They're miles apart - Ipswich and Southend are much closer to Colchester...obviously bored this afternoon

I think it's a legacy of their late 80s early 90s conference days.  I always understood that for a time Wycombe saw us as a big rival too, somewhat strangely.

Also moonrakers refers to the locals of Devizes not swindon. Funny how they decided to call us something only related to us by county, although i suppose we are the only club in the county...  :D

The fan friendship thing doesn't really happen in England but is a lot more common in some other European countries.  Sometimes you'll even see football scarves showing the colours of 2 different clubs...all seems a little alien here.  (One example I can think of is the tie up between St Pauli and Celtic.)

If we were to have a natural empathy with another club (which we haven't) it would have to be Spurs.   We've had shedloads of Tottenham players and managers....some legendary Spurs names ....Allen Mackay Ardiles Hoddle *cough*Gorman.....then players like Moncur, Hazard, Ray Clarke, *cough* Jamie Slabber.....even  :king: was on the books there for a while.

Whereas from the Arse.....Jo Kuffour and that's about it.

interesting to see that Rovers ranked us as their third rival and we didn't rank them at all

Fair point, and maybe Brian Marwood briefly, but the fact still stands for some reason we've always had plenty of Spurs connections.

Fan friendships are a load of bollocks. I hate everyone.

In the late 80's you used to get a lot of scarves which were half an English club and half Rangers or Celtic.
