Title: The 2012 Olympics Post by: oxford_fan on Thursday, February 17, 2005, 13:23:04 Definitely. I thought it was a bit of a joke at the start to be honest, we were regarded as one of the top 5 but not a favourite.

Title: The 2012 Olympics Post by: Piemonte on Thursday, February 17, 2005, 14:06:16 Cant see any downside to it, hope london gets it
Title: The 2012 Olympics Post by: Reg Smeeton on Thursday, February 17, 2005, 14:31:01 The downside tends to be a vast overspend, with the bill being picked up by the taxpayer.
I would love a WC though. Title: The 2012 Olympics Post by: janaage on Thursday, February 17, 2005, 14:35:06 Oh yeah, the world cup staged over here would be amazing, that looks a long way away though, unless some country given the honour has to pull out a la Columbia in 86. We'd be ready to host the WC at short notice!

Title: The 2012 Olympics Post by: Dazzza on Friday, February 18, 2005, 00:13:46 It was a strange feeling wondering around the Sydney olympic village a couple of years on from the event.
It was an absolute ghost town, these impressive stadiums slightly out in the sticks just left unused. If I remember rightly they where in the process of stripping one of them to get the capacity right down so that any future events didn't look half deserted. I have a couple of pics somewhere of me dancing about on the official Sydney olympic rings and logo. Good way to do a bit of regen in local areas and can raise the old profile quite nicely for business and the like. Title: The 2012 Olympics Post by: Dazzza on Friday, February 18, 2005, 00:24:52 Good stuff. I remember the Australian chap we where with at the time didn't think to much of it all and thought it all a waste of money.
I never got to see it but did you get a chance to see the Athletes village Whits or had it gone by that stage? I suppose with London there are plenty of teams and sports that could go on to use a lot of the stadia.
