Title: ipod advice Post by: oxford_fan on Monday, September 4, 2006, 17:19:52 after my old one finally breaking, i'm now getting round to replacing it.
i want an ipod because i like the way it organises the songs on the player and its compatibility with iTunes, which i use for playing music on my PC. i'm torn between the nano and regular ipod, though. not sure if i will use the video playback on the regular ipod much, so was looking at nano's but when comparing the two: regular, with video, 30gb - £160 (normally £180, but reconditioned on ebuyer http://www.ebuyer.com/UK/product/115408) nano, no video, 2gb - £112 seems a bit silly to not pay the little extra for 15 times the amount of storage. 2gb is about 40 albums, right? what do people think of their ipods? do you use the video? has your nano got enough space? id go for a creative zen player. Title: ipod advice Post by: Simon Pieman on Monday, September 4, 2006, 18:56:12 I don't have an ipod but itunes is shit. It wouldn't put me off an ipod though, but I'd probably look around at others too if I were to get an mp3 player
Title: ipod advice Post by: flammableBen on Monday, September 4, 2006, 18:56:52 I'm going to build my own out of paperclips coathangers and string.
Title: ipod advice Post by: oxford_fan on Monday, September 4, 2006, 19:00:24 i'm quite tempted by the nano now, they're bloody tiny and i'm rubbish having a load of songs to choose from - i end up skipping track all the time.
i find itunes much easier to use than media player/real player, although i've not really given them much of a chance to be fair. Title: ipod advice Post by: stfc11 on Monday, September 4, 2006, 19:18:28 i've got a 2GB nano and have got about 380 songs on it at the moment including about 10 photo's...i went for it because it was so small and the ipod with video eats away at the battery life

I don't like realplayer and media player isn't that great. I usually use winamp but I found sonicstage surprisingly good to use. The problem I found with itunes is the lack of features :( Title: ipod advice Post by: oxford_fan on Monday, September 4, 2006, 21:12:30 i used to use winamp at work, seemed alright.
what features do you need? all i want to do is play songs. its easy to browse my library in itunes too, its organised well. Title: ipod advice Post by: Nomoreheroes on Monday, September 4, 2006, 21:13:07 I'm going for the Cowon iAudio X5 60Gb (or X5L = 30Gb but much longer battery life). The sound quality is supposed to be far superior to anything else. You can play ogg and flac formats and are not bound by those bloody ID3 tags that itunes insists on. You can just drag and drop folders from your pc without using any proprietry software.
NMH PS. Use Jetaudio. Its pretty nice Title: ipod advice Post by: Whits on Monday, September 4, 2006, 21:14:15 The nano is wank, i've got the 2gb one, the battery life is awful, its nice and small but useless for long trips
Title: ipod advice Post by: oxford_fan on Monday, September 4, 2006, 21:20:50 how long roughly whits?
seeing as i used to have a 3g ipod i'm used to them lasting about 3 hours, so anything is likely to be an improvement. Title: ipod advice Post by: Whits on Monday, September 4, 2006, 21:21:56 3 hours max, seems to be getting less and less though :x

I love it, and rarely leave the house without it.
Battery life is about 11 hours if you listen to just music, and about 2 if you watch videos. I don't use the video option very often, but I do have a few Simpsons episodes, and the Office series 2 on there. It can waste half an hour or so sometimes. I have around 1,000 songs on there, plus the video content, and this takes up just 8Gb! Impossible to fill the bloody thing if you ask me. Title: ipod advice Post by: Whits on Monday, September 4, 2006, 21:26:53 about 6 months ago i think, i won it at work so not really to bothered. they always claim time which is never acheivable!

NMH Title: ipod advice Post by: oxford_fan on Monday, September 4, 2006, 22:26:58 still too much, i don't want to spend much over £100 if possible
spending anything means going more into my overdraft, so got to minimise it Title: ipod advice Post by: Nomoreheroes on Tuesday, September 5, 2006, 00:41:52 Wait for a little bit as the Creative Zen Vision: M is just about to be upgraded to a 60Gb model. That will probably result in the 30Gb being reduced in price.
The Zen Vision: M is touted as the best all round hard drive mp3 player on the market. Its video screen is better than the Ipod. The things I don't like about it is that if you look at it it scratches and it doesn't play flac nor ogg. Furthermore, it insists on ID3 tags. If I can't get the Cowon at the price I want then I'll get one of these. I have a Creative Zen Nano Plus and it is pretty damn good. If you want to know more then go to www.epizenter.net or www.iaudiophile.net. There are lots of geeks on there that appear to know lots. a cowon one http://www.advancedmp3players.co.uk/shop/product_info.php?cPath=1&products_id=1012 the creative, looks nice http://www.advancedmp3players.co.uk/shop/product_info.php?cPath=1&products_id=1581 these 2 http://www.advancedmp3players.co.uk/shop/product_info.php?cPath=1&products_id=1299 http://www.advancedmp3players.co.uk/shop/product_info.php?cPath=1&products_id=1606 Title: ipod advice Post by: Nomoreheroes on Tuesday, September 5, 2006, 04:12:12 Two last pieces of advice:
1. You gotta think about what you want to do with the player. If you want to store loadsa albums (and use it in the car maybe) then go for a hard disk. If you wanna jog around, use it at the gym or while you are active then go for flash media. 2. Batteries: I'm happy that with my Creative flash media player I can replace the batteries. It takes one AAA which lasts a fair while ! If you get some of the larger flash and hd players, they come with an integrated rechargeable battery. How long do those last before they don't hold a charge and you have to throw it away ? How about this one (the upgraded version of one I have had for a couple of years): http://www.advancedmp3players.co.uk/shop/product_info.php?cPath=1&products_id=717 Fits your price range with some change to spend at the County Ground ! NMH Title: ipod advice Post by: oxford_fan on Tuesday, September 5, 2006, 11:19:03 1. decided i don't want a massive one like my old ipod because i always change track with so much music at hand. so i'm looking at 2gb storage, 1gb is too small and anything over 2gb is a waste as i'm going to have to cut down my portable library drastically considering i've got 40gb music.
2. as i used to have an oldish ipod, nearly all batteries are going to be an improvement on what i'm used to. don't like the look of that creative. Title: ipod advice Post by: flammableBen on Tuesday, September 5, 2006, 17:40:35 Gay. I've run out of string. The Mp3 decryption process is prooving to be a nightmare. I've used 53 paperclips allready and I must only be halfway through. Think the display might end up a bit limited for the prototype model.
Title: ipod advice Post by: oxford_fan on Wednesday, September 6, 2006, 13:59:12 i gave in and bought a 4gb nano. the sandisc one looked really good but i trust apple too much.
also, i was just sick on top of a hill. went for a run and was nackered by the top of the hill, wasn't feeling too great but breathed in and got a noseful of cowshit gas, rank |
