Title: Will Wise walk?
Post by: STFC Bart on Tuesday, July 4, 2006, 20:56:40
With no evidence whatsoever so far of any  thing in the way of resource to get us out of league 2, who thinks that Wise will walk?

I for one would not be suprised. Cannot believe he would not have come here without assurance of resources available and if this promise is broken i wouldnt be suprised to see him go

Neither were Cheltenham last season. I'm happy with our signings so far, can't think of a bad one.

They are Wise's signings anyway so I can't see your point. Unless you think Wise is gonna walk because he's breaking his own promises...?

OH FUCK OFF!!!

NO HE IS NOT GOING TO WALK!!!

We're in the 4th Division. That severely limits the scope of who you can attract to the club regardless of how much money you might have. Maybe, just maybe he is getting players in who can do a job for us at this level - You know, horses for courses and all that. I also think he has really got the players buzzing and raring to go - listen to the Lee Peacock interview. But let's just ignore that and be miserable fuckers, that's much more fun isn't it?

I get the feeling that there are certain people who would actually quite like him to walk just so they can say "Ha ha, I told you so, I'm a clever mother fucker!"

That is all.

Good night. :boring:

I have to admit,i'm trying not to get too worked up at the new managership team, just in case it blows up in our faces, well it wouldn't be the first time its happened would it :(
Having said that i don't believe now is the time to be going on about Wise leaving,or moaning about about lack of signings, cause it is exciting, and tbh i have to pinch myself everytime i see Wise in a Swindon training top :D
Lets just for once try not to worry and be a bit positive   and enjoy this pre-season,for a change!

He's not going to walk, and if he does it won't be for a while as he signed a 3 year contract which shows his commitment and the fact that he wants to get this club back up to league 2. Just because we ain't splashing the cash doesn't mean were not getting good signings.

What's up Reg, you seemed to agree with me a short while ago that we could be cautiously optimistic with Wise and the revived Board, as opposed to Iffy and the old Board, which had no hope and with which we would not survive ?

What has changed your thinking?  I think it's too early to judge how he's doing, but he seems too committed to bottle out, at least until/if it becomes a hopeless task. He would have nothing to gain.

I know it's dangerous to join the optimists club, but a 73 year old female relative who sits by me, has supported for many years, but can hardly climb the stairs now, decided to stop coming as it wasn't worth it.  She has renewed because of Wise etc.  Here's hoping.

Just to add my two penneth - I can never resist a good old rant at someone who's being an idiot!

Where have we had evidence money is not available to Wise?

As OST pointed out in another thread - contract lengths are down to Wise, therefore he's the one making choices!

In another interview from Devlin a while ago he said Den has offered players what he considers to be good value for each player - we lost out on one because he wanted more - there was no indication that Den was told he would not be able to offer what said player requested, more along the lines of Den himself not thinking him worth the money he was asking.

Have you not noticed over the last few years the transfer market has changed considerably - more and more players are available on free transfers, or are out of contract - if Den feels that he can attract players capable of getting us back to L1 for free wouldn't you rather that as opposed to dishing out needless wads of cash just to keep ignorant 'fans' like you happy?

Besides which - if he spends no money and gets promotion then Power may be more inclined to offer Wise a decent budget next term as a reward if you like.  If Den does have a kitty to spend I'm sure he's waiting to see what the market throws up on the free front before looking to actually spend.

So far from what I can tell is that we've signed a very decent CB - one a Cov fan friend of mine wanted to keep in the Championship.  We've signed an experienced LB, an experienced LM/ST and two promising players in Weston and Onibuje. If Boland does indeed sign do you really think we could have done much beter if we resourced players for these positions from other clubs - possibly mounting up to £500,000 of debt along the way?

I'm still happy with the idea of a new management team, but do consider it a legitimate point to raise as to whether he's getting the promised resources?

For example Martin Allen presumably has gone to MKD on the promise of some money, and is able to pay higher wages and a transfer fee, for a player Wise presumably wanted to keep.

Its entirely possible that it was clearly spelt out to Dennis that he'd have to operate on a shoestring, and he was happy enough with that.

Which is why I qualified my thoughts by saying we'd soon find out.

Its not negative to raise a valid question for debate....its what some of the sections of the TEF are for....it should raise the tone if the argument can be undertaken without recourse to abuse.

Sorry Sir (no disrespect intended towards you!), i was wound up. Besides, question or not, it's weighted very heavily in the negative end, and in my eyes is negative.

The fact remains, the season has yet to start, and his remarks are as speculative as any rumour site. I also feel now is the time to wake up smiling and dream of a good season and get behind the club.

We have not been told Wise has come with the promise of transfer funds, for that matter promises of any sort. He has been bought in to help the club and strive towards more solid foundations.

Now, if he has been made promises, then yes, a promise could be broken. I feel however that a young up and coming manager, wants a crack of the whip at the thick end of football. To learn the ropes without transfer funds and a squad in disarray within the bottom of the football league is a character building baptism with fire.

With Wise clearly being a fighter and someone who doesn't give up, i feel this is the challenge someone of his nature would relish.

If Wise has been offered resources, then hopefully he's astute enough to use them wisely.

I belive our board are a bunch of monkeys, but with Power, SSW and Devlin being instumental in the employment of Wise and Poyet, i feel these 3 would keep up their end of any promises they've made.

You raise good points....its interesting to read in today's Adver, that Wise has recruited Steve Slattery to do some massage work for free....as he'd worked with SS in the Engalnd squad.   They are also trying to find other volunteers for massage work.

This would explain why I saw Christian Robertrs coming out of St Tropez recently, doubtless in his new role of vice captain.
