Title: Mark Devlin- answers please
Post by: STFC Bart on Tuesday, July 4, 2006, 10:09:22
1) Why are we still only offering 1 year contracts- i understood the arrival of Power meant we could compete for the "Better players out there". This isnt going to happen only offering players a year, they will get better deals elsewhere.

2) What is happening about signing a proven striker at this level- show us the colour of your money

3) Whats happening with the redevelopment?

4) When are you going to rplace that weasal Carson with someone for chairman who cares for the club

Surely its better to only offer one year deals to players in this division.  What happens when we get promoted? we would be left carrying league 2 players.

2. Its in hand, we also have peacock and roberts.

3. I believe plans are being redrawn that will meet council regs

4. No proffessional will answer that question.

Looks like the right answers to me.

On the contracts, we offered 3 years to O'Hanlon and in Jan we offered longer than 12 month deals.  Maybe it's a decision based on each player individually, or is that just a daft idea?

As far as I can see we have only been told we lost out on one player and the recent departure was being offered 3 years, so the deals being offered are not causing a problem.

the mistake was not offering that 3 year to Rhys instead of O Hanlon .. he would have taken 2 years im sure

he wont answer it but, does carson really care for the club?
that is more important i think.
can you honestly say you haven't had a similar thought about carson?
so who's the cock?

No, I don't like Carson but that's not the point.  There's no point puttin questions to Mark D that he cannot be expected to answer!

What do you mean, "Who's the cock"???

in answer to question 1..we offered o,hanlon a 3 year deal

williams is 34,monkhouse is injury prone as is vincent, and weston is unproven..

all fair contract offers in my opinion

Seems fairly obvious to me. No matter how much you hate Carson and want answers you're never going to get them, so there's little point in asking, i.e. you'll be wasting your time. I think OST was just trying to make that point rather than slate people for disliking Carson or making a point of that fact.

On the buying a striker thing. Would people rather that Wise rushed a buy and spent (for the sake of argument) £100k on a player? That player turns out to be a steaming pile of turd. Wise has wasted £100k that could have been put to better use. If Wise waits a while then spends the money, he's more likely to get a quality purchase. However, this assumes we'll be in the transfer market for players, but I don't think we will be for some time. My impression of the money for players was to build a squad of players that would mean a bigger wage bill than before, hence the extra money.

no point gambling in giving players long term contracts, the financial implications if the player turns out to be rubbish (hello tony thorpe) are likely to be expensive. as others have said, the players we've signed on 1 year deals are either old, injury prone or unproven. where's the logic in offering a 34 year old a 3 year deal?

2) What is happening about signing a proven striker at this level- show us the colour of your money

devlin doesn't decide who we sign, wise will be responsible for deciding which positions need strengthening and identifying targets accordingly. i'd say that our lack of goalkeepers is far more pressing along with seano's sudden departure.

such as who? bill power? as happy as i am that he's joined us, i don't understand how he cares for the club anymore than carson would. neither have local connections to the town or long-term history with the club, do they?

don't see why it matters anyway, carson might be a horrible little dwarf but he's not the one making decisions, he's not the public face of the club and he's not the one with the cash.

They're fair questions, the club do seem to be dragging their feet a bit, as if the Wise signing is enough.

Title: Mark Devlin- answers please
Post by: STFC Bart on Tuesday, July 4, 2006, 20:48:21
To be honest its the same old story. Decent manager but board who drag their feet.

We wont compete for the best free transfers even offering 1 year deals, the majority will geta better offer

How do you know?

Have you never once thought that it could be down to the player we're signing? If there is a decent young player they want I'm sure they'd offer more than one year.

Title: Mark Devlin- answers please
Post by: yeo on Tuesday, July 4, 2006, 21:49:00
Its obvious.

Shit team with shit manager offer 2/3 year contract

Shit team with high profile manager offer 1 year contract.

What do you choose when your a free agent?  stability every time these chaps have mortgages to pay.

Title: Mark Devlin- answers please

i'm sure they're struggling to pay for their mortgages earning a grand a week.

Title: Mark Devlin- answers please

A grand a week for 3 years guaranteed of a grand a week for 1 year?

Title: Mark Devlin- answers please
Post by: sonic youth on Tuesday, July 4, 2006, 21:56:13
3 years obviously, but the thought of a professional footballer scrambling around struggling to pay off debts, mortgages and credit cards is absolutely laughable

I dont think it is for a 3rd division footballer.

Then I dont know what they earn to be honest.Im sure there are plenty on here who earn more than the average 3rd div player though and I bet they still struggle for money.

can't say 100% for sure what players are on but if you believe rumours and the suchlike then £1,000p/w isn't far off the mark or uncommon.

maybe i'm just bitter because i've never earnt more than £800 in a month.

Has it occurred to you that it might be that Wise wants to offer one year deals and the board are just going along with it? It may not be the board's decision not to offer 3 year deals.

We need players who want to fight for their place in the team and prove themselves, players that fail in this respect won't have much options to them when their contract expires. That's the way I see it anyway. Maybe this is what Wise is thinking? Or maybe it's just the board not allowing 3 year deals  :D

I'm sure O'Hanlon beat the banker this time round though.

1 year contracts are common place in the lower leagues now. will a journey man player (as most of them are down here) remain hungry and motivated if he knows he's got another 2 years to fall back on?

Just saying the costs to live today have gone up, wasnt being flash at all, well wasnt meant to be.  I used to have a mortgage etc and car on 800 a month but as you get older your outgoings go up and sharpish.  I think most people would struggle to live on 800 a month (unless your living at home)

Just because you don't have a mortgage doesn't mean you don't have somewhere to live.

£800 a month isn't really much to live off, but I do know people that aren't students who do live on that after tax and NI etc.

Footballers get payed tax free usually, so where £800 is quoted, that's after tax.

I think I will admit I have lost this arguement, but just to try and get in the last word I cant live at hom so id have to rent somewhere so 800 wouldnt cover that.

I don't know how you do it, but you some how manage to squeeze in the fact you own a Bimmer at regular intervals.

Anyway, as Si Pi puts it, anyone can live of £800 a month, i could live off that with extreme ease and i'm 27 and i don't live at home and i'm not a student.

It's just a case of not loading yourself with debt and living the Champagne lifestyle for everyone to watch.
