Dennis Wise has made his first signing as Town manager by adding Andy Monkhouse to the squad for the 2006-7 season.

Monkhouse, 25, has been with League One side Rotherham United for the past eight years, having joined the club as a trainee and made 68 starts for The Millers.

Yeah, doing some research back and he was out for the start of last season ... looks like he had a knee problem

http://www.football.co.uk/rotherham_united/monkhouse_misery_for_millers_179373.shtml

Got to admit, that week to week contract thing looks a bit worrying ... was that because of the injuries?

Just what we need. A crock.

Reminds me a little of Grunt Sniff. He moves in a similar way and, for someone who is meant to be a winger, he seems to come into the centre of the park a fair bit.

Mixed opinions on Brown, has the potential to be good but has yet to deliver consistantly.
Also David Stroud is hardly going to give Brown a great deal of competition for the place yet so signing a leftie is not a totally unexpected move.

Title: Andy Monkhouse
Post by: OOH! SHAUN TAYLOR on Thursday, June 22, 2006, 11:57:19
It's a bit harsh having a go at Stroud surely? He's played once (I think?) and was oustanding from what I heard.

Title: Andy Monkhouse
Post by: kevjoycreed on Thursday, June 22, 2006, 12:02:06
I'm not having a go, its just that Stroud has yet to break into the first team on a regular basis as yet and has little / no experiance. Therefore not likely to be challenging Brown for the shirt.
Aka Bullman failing to challenge Evans last term.

Post by: kevjoycreed on Thursday, June 22, 2006, 12:03:11

David Stroud was awesome at Huddersfield and tore apart what was/is a very good side apart. He was a class above anything on that pitch and didnt look out of place.

Then he got injured, at the wrong time....but he showed me enough in that Huddersfield game...

He is a good left winger, well worth and capable of a place in our first team

It makes me laugh when people bang on about so called 'big names'.  We signed Thorpe and Curo last season who were technically 'big names' and look where that got us!

Wise isn't on his own in this scouting and signing malarky.  He has the help of some very experienced professionals, if they all didn't rate him and think he could do a job for us I doubt they would have signed him.

Title: Andy Monkhouse
Post by: Dazzza on Thursday, June 22, 2006, 12:48:27
Good signing and I actually did a bit of research last night as it was posted on the old Adver board late on.

Probably a fairly decent Championship player on past form and actually attracted some interest when he was there with Rotherham that would probably have required a considerable fee just a couple of seasons back.

His departure from Rotherham looks more to do with the administrators rather than being down to a football decision.  He was rumoured to be on a decent wage and with them sinking into financial woes they want everyone they possibly can get off the books over the summer.

On the injury front he’s been on and off what looks for the past couple of years and reading a few of the Millers fan’s comments he’s never quite reached the same standard as he originally played at.  A couple of chaps have mentioned that if he’s not given a regular kick up the behind then he can be one to rest on his laurels with again a few fans mentioning that with the crowd on his back he often looks their best player of the season.

All in all a pretty good signing I’d say.  If we can put him through boot camp and keep him motivated which I’d suspect Mr Wise will do then we may could have a quality player on our hands.

Reading that post Dazza makes me think Wise might have had an eye on him when at Millwall then.

Aaron Brown gets a lot of flack but I think he'll turn out to be a good signing.  Lets not forget he had hardly played in 2 years when we got him, he started to show some good touched towards the end despite having to play as a wing back.

Some of them sound a bit bitter about him, then the whole message board looks like it attracts some odd people.

So, basically he seems to be gifted, a proper winger who can cross and on his day was their best player

on the down side, he lives a lavish lifestyle, drinks a bit, and tends to need motivating to get a performance out of him.

So, we have signed him based on potential, and I'm assuming our new regime will be sorting out the negative stuff with the new focus on lifestyle, diet and discipline.  If that all does start to bear fruit then we could be onto a winner.

Trust Shaun Hodgett's to do a Bob Monkhouse reference in his first interview with him on the BBC Wiltshire website.
