Absolutely, a top bloke. Shame he couldn't have stayed on in some sort of capacity. Fair few games left in him though, so hope he gets the chance to prove that somewhere else.

Steve Jenkins expressed his anger last night after being told he was no longer wanted by Swindon Town. The veteran defender had verbally agreed to a new one-year contract, offered by former manager Iffy Onuora.

However, new boss Dennis Wise, who replaced Onuora last month, has decided to dispense with the services of the 33-year-old former Welsh international.

Jenkins is angry about the way his situation was handled but said he was confident he would find a new club.

The former Swansea and Huddersfield man has already spoken to a number of League One and League Two clubs.

He said: "Obviously I feel angry and disappointed, but more angry to be honest.

"But I'm long in the tooth now and I know these things happen in football, so I have to move on.

"But when you verbally agree something with people, you usually expect them to stick to it. This time, they have not.

"Obviously I agreed the deal with Iffy, but he was operating on behalf of Swindon Town Football Club. They authorised him to do that. I thought my future was sorted for another year and I would have loved to have stayed at Swindon.

"I think I have another couple of seasons left in me, and I was thinking I might finish up at Swindon.

"I've had no contact with Dennis Wise and I actually had to call the club today to find out. That was disappointing.

"But these things happen in football and you have to take the rough with the smooth.

"And a lot of people have lost their jobs at Swindon lately, people like Iffy and (former assistant manager) Alan Reeves, and I feel for them. It has not been a nice time."

Jenkins joined Swindon in October 2004 and made 54 appearances for the Robins.

Meanwhile, Swindon have received confirmation from striker Jamie Cureton that he wishes to leave the club.

The former Bristol Rovers favourite had a clause in his contract saying he could leave on a free transfer if the club were relegated to League Two.

Cureton is understood to be in talks with Championship outfit Colchester, with whom he enjoyed a successful loan spell last term

STEVE Jenkins insists he is not bitter about his County Ground exit and feels you have to be braindead' to take anything for granted in football.

The 33-year-old defender has been told he is surplus to requirements by new boss Dennis Wise, barely a fortnight after being offered a new deal by former manager Iffy Onuora.

Jenkins is disappointed but not entirely surprised by developments.

He said: "Of course I'm not happy about it but then that's football isn't it?

"I've been in this game long enough to know that you take nothing for granted.

"A new manager comes in and he's going to want to do his own thing, whether it be coaching staff or players. He'll want spaces in the squad that he can fill himself.

"I'm not going to start slagging people off or spitting my dummy out of the pram. I certainly don't hold any grudges.

"I won't be the first player in this situation and I'm sure I won't be the last.

"When Iffy left the club all the out of contract lads were obviously in limbo.

"I certainly wasn't naive or stupid enough to think that everything was sorted' in my case. I think you'd have to be braindead to assume anything is wrapped up unless the contract is signed.

"You move on in life. I wish the club all the best. There were other irons in the fire in the sense people had enquired about my situation as I know a lot of people in football.

"At least the picture is clear now and it's time for a new chapter.

"It's that old adage where one door closes, another opens' I suppose.

"I feel good and people are playing until 37 or 38 with no problems these days.

"I've enjoyed my time at Swindon Town. It's certainly been an eventful club to be at.

"I'll be watching with interest to see how things develop next season."

While Jenkins is now looking for a new club, striker Jamie Cureton's County Ground exit visa has been all but rubber-stamped.

Town have now received an official written letter from the player requesting a transfer, exercising the clause in his contract enabling him to leave on a free transfer following the club's relegation to League Two.

Cureton revealed to the Swindon Advertiser last week that he was mulling over a two-year offer from a club in a higher division and that he anxious to play as high as he could for as long as he could.

Championship new boys Colchester United are close to completing a deal for the 30-year-old.

It is sad that Iffy, Jenks and Reeves have had to leave, but that's the nature of contract work and especially football. Good luck to him in the future, but I don't think we'll be missing him from a player perspective next season.

He gave his all though and was never one to be criticised for lack of effort. Good luck to him I say.

Not a great start by Wise.Jenks would have been an asset in my opinion.
