Title: Mazda MX5 or MGF
Post by: Dazzza on Monday, April 24, 2006, 16:56:17
I'm fucking brassed and about 4 weeks putting in for my test so need to start looking at motors sharpish.  Elan is out of the question for a few months while I recover from the sledge hammer of debt from buying my new pad so the budget has been slashed.

Alternatives my mechanic mate has come up with are the MX5 and the MGF with preference for the latter in the reliability stakes.

Anyone got any suggestions/alternatives?

Got to be 1.6/1.8 max and convertable so I can stand up and wave my willy around as I drive with my feet.

I'd be loathed to buy anything MG Rover now plus with the Mazda your get Jap build quality and reliability.

And what if I cut hair for living, perhaps I want a car fitting for my profession!

I'll just get this shall I and be done with it?

Are you dead set on an MX5 or MGF then Dazzza?

If not, maybe post you're requirements of said automobile and budget, and let the petrol heads on here suggest some suitable alternatives.

Not dead set, to be honest my automobile knowledge is limited to say the least.  Bit of a magpie rather than looking at performance really, explaining the hairdresser’s selection.

The MX5 was the closest match suggested to the Elan on a budget.

Suggestions definately welcome

Depends on your budget but the best convertible for me is the Honda S2000.

240 bhp and 9k rpm rev limit

Ford Ka convertible?!   :D

I'd personally have the Mazda, just because it has a better image - none of this naffing crap about performance/reliability/build quality - who cares about that bollocks as long as it looks good?!

if an mx5 suits you then go for that, they're a decent car and the best in that range, just a bit limp for my liking. saying that i'm still driving a 1.1 fiesta which doesn't exactly scream testosterone but i'm skint for the next few years as a stoodent

First time driver Daz, regardless of age you will get absolutely fucked on the insurance for those.

A lad of 21 down the road from me is driving a simple Vectra, but it's a 1.8. 5 grand insurance, ouch.

A sporty car will be a bit more I'd reckon.

About £500 ish for the MX5 fully comp, which is not bad.

I'd go for a mark 1 convertible (if it has to be a soft top at all).

You can then hang out with surfer dudes like.....

I got a fair chunk knocked off mine by specifying I do less than 9000 miles a year. The default was about twice that, so might be worth a mention with regards to coinage saved.
