Title: Should I stay or should I go? Post by: Bob's Orange on Sunday, April 23, 2006, 18:30:07 I have been asked by my mate in Luxemburg if I fancy going over there to live and work, needing to start in 6 weeks. Basically they need 1 person to work for a company called Lombard (some kind of financial place) in a phone/email team. It sounds similar to what I am doing now but will be for much more money.
I would be on a salary of between 36,000 - 41,000 Euro and can expect an annual bonus of approximately 2-4,000 Euro. I would be getting 34.5 holidays a year along with 9 public days. The company would put me up in an apartment for 2 months and pay my rent for the first 2 months. They would also pay for my flights across and to ship all my stuff over. Seems like a bit of a no brainer, especially as I already know 3 folk over there. I have never really been very adventurous but quite fancy taking a chance. Anyone on here worked/lived abroad? Was thinking Italian or Spanish maybe as I can get by with a bit of basic Francais! Title: Should I stay or should I go? Post by: Reg Smeeton on Sunday, April 23, 2006, 18:45:40 When I lived in Portsmouth some years ago, I had reason to go to Newcastle, for no apparent reason I worked out that if I took the equivalent as the crow flies journey in a generally southerly direction I'd end up in Luxembourg.
You already live in a foreign country. Title: Should I stay or should I go? Post by: Mexicano Rojo on Sunday, April 23, 2006, 18:52:31 do it no questions.
what have you got to lose? you can do it for a year and if its shit you can come back. working abroad is ace, its exciting and can be pretty scarey but is the most rewarding thing you can do. and if you get a free language course thrown in bite there fucking hand off. i would opt for spanish, it opens up a hell of a lot more doors than italian. Title: Should I stay or should I go? Post by: ibelieveinmrreeves on Sunday, April 23, 2006, 20:25:48 Hell yes, go for it. I'd like to think I would.
Title: Should I stay or should I go? Post by: Bedford Red on Sunday, April 23, 2006, 20:54:08 I agree with the others, go for it Edinburgh.
My best mate went and worked in Germany for 3 yrs in the 90's, really enjoyed it. was hard work with the language but once he learnt that he got on fine. And just two weeks ago he upped for good with his family and they've gone to live permantly in Sweden (his job again). If i had the chance I would take it. Title: Should I stay or should I go? Post by: Nomoreheroes on Monday, April 24, 2006, 06:02:02 Have you ever heard the phrase 'Travel broadens the mind ' ? Well I can tell you having worked abroad a couple of times for several years at a time that it is entirely true. I find it sad when I come back home and see my friends at how blinkered their outlook on life is. From what you have said ie live abroad, more money, better opportunities and free further education then you would be mad to turn it down !
NMH Title: Should I stay or should I go? Post by: genf_stfc on Monday, April 24, 2006, 11:28:01 you'd be a twat if you don't take that, sounds top notch. I've had my ups and downs in Switzerland, but if i could go back four years i would still take the same decision to move over like a shot (although I would have tried to sort out my tax position properly first !!).
Title: Should I stay or should I go? Post by: Bob's Orange on Saturday, May 20, 2006, 12:11:26 Had my interview today which went really well. Provided I pass the aptitude tests I am 99% certain they'll offer me the job. It all sounds really good with a much better salary than over here and longer holidays!
I am quite excited about this now! Title: Should I stay or should I go? I could lie and say yes I made it! but no I didn't. "Borrowed" it from http://www.swindon-town-fc.co.uk/ which is where I get most of my pictures from. I thought it was excellent too which is why I'm using it. Title: Should I stay or should I go? Post by: pumbaa on Sunday, May 21, 2006, 19:13:03 Ed, to coin a phrase by Nike, just do it!
I currently live and work in the USA. Clearly very different to living in Luxembourg, but for the experience, you just have to sample a different culture for an extended period of time. There is a monumental downside when the CG is 4500 miles away, but based on the evidence of last season that wasn't really a problem. The only problem is that America is full of Americans. But thanks to an immigration problem that would blow Tony B Liar's mind, that won't be the case for long. Title: Should I stay or should I go? Post by: Onion_Jimbo on Sunday, May 21, 2006, 23:42:16 how have you got a visa coxernator? I have been researching into getting one but with no luck. Seems I have to be skilled or something. I've got a years experience working at homebase I have a NATO Visa as I work for the Government. Its only temporary as I'm on an exchange tour, which means I have to come home in early 2008, although my Visa is valid for another couple of years afterwards. If you want a job, apply to Mr Tony B Liar, 10 Downing St. There are some plusses though. Its great going through the diplomatic channels at airports whilst every other git is queuing 8) If you've ever flown into Atlanta airport, you'll know what a godsend that is! Fuck a Visa, become an illegal immigrant. America is full of them. About 20% of the working population are immigrant workers, especially in areas close to the Mexican border. You get treated better too. Title: Should I stay or should I go? Post by: Onion_Jimbo on Monday, May 22, 2006, 10:12:11 If you get deported for being illegal you wil never be able to come back. I cant risk not going to vegas again
