Title: Jimmy Johnstone
Post by: Bob's Orange on Monday, March 13, 2006, 18:57:14
Passed away today after a battle against Motor Neurone Disease. Living up here I have seen clips of the guy and he looked different class. Nicknamed 'Jinky', some say he was as good as Stanley Matthews and George Best.

My mate who we are staying with in Luxemburg is a Celtic season ticket holder and said when he had heard the news it was like a member of his family dying.

I remember Jimmy, but in those days seeing stuff on the box from chilly Jocko land,  was a rarity bit like seeing stuff from a 3rd world country today.

But one of my earliest other than STFC memories was seeing the  Lisbon Lions....bring down Herrara's loathsome cattenachio in 67....wee Jimmy was in that side along with Tommy Gemmell....Bobby Murdoch and Bertie Auld etc...

He was the archetype Scottish winger, bow legged, carrot top, little un....there seemed to be a production line some where in Strathclyde.

They don't make them anymore....in fact the Sweaties don't seem to make any type of footballer now.

BTW with my pedant heed on..  think its got an e on the end....unlike that other legend of Scottish football....Willie Johnston

Have only read about him, but what I have read says what a great footballer he was.

Another great bites the dust, R.I.P.

Although a seemingly trivial point....might make a lot of difference knowing the correct way of spelling Willie and Jimmy's names in some pubs in Scotland.

A minutes applause before KO and the Celtic players will have JJ's number (7) on the front and back of their shorts. A nice touch

The fact that there have been many tributes by Rangers fans and Rangers scarves and shirts left at Parkhead in respect says a lot about the player and man he was.

Clips of JJ in his prime.

Enjoyed watching that, thanks Edinburgh.

As Village says, a nice touch that they're all wearing No 7 on Saturday as well on their shorts.

Borrowing that pedant hat for just one moment, I think that it is actually 'catenaccio'.
