Title: League Two - Chances?
Post by: Dazzza on Wednesday, March 8, 2006, 15:03:00
How do you rate our chances in League two next season?

I genuinely think we have enough players tied to contracts to ensure we don’t drop out of the league altogether but given the almost guaranteed assumption that attendances will drop as will ticket prices more cut-backs will simply mean a smaller playing budget.

Without the serious sort of transfer activity that brings in acquisitions that would only come as a surprise I can’t see us putting up a genuine challenge for promotion.

There are far too many league two clubs that have got their houses in order a few years ago and have been steadily progressing while we have been busy lurching from one calamity to the next.

The massive squad upheaval we are going to see relegation or not, coupled with low morale and niggling issues off the pitch will mean we are left at serious disadvantage to a lot of the league two clubs that are already on a par if not already in front of us when it comes to organisation, finances, ambition and stability.

You only have to look at how both the relegated and promoted sides have performed in recent years to gauge the sort of standard in the basement league.  Certainly smaller squad sizes, shorter contracts and a cut back in salaries have left the basement boys with a higher standard of player by comparison of five years back.

Hate to say it but if we go down I can see us being stuck there for a good few seasons.

Do you think we'll drop right through?   :(

Christ I hope not although if form continues at present as it has done to the end of the season as much as I love the chap I’d wager we have to look at replacing Iffy with more of an experienced campaigner/safe pair of hands.

Not that I think we’re done for just yet.  Yeovil should prove another good gauge but it’s interesting to ponder the future.

True Johno..but we've walked right into this, having done the hard work of getting out of the bottom 4 the players mentally switched off....and it looks beyond them to switch back on.

I'd be very surprised if we get ourselves out of this mess...though Smith coming back would surely help.

As to next season,as ever it will depend on squad acquisitions in the summer, and how the season starts....but there's nothing as things stand to make it seem likely to be anything but a struggle.

You can't possibly say how we're going to do next season because we don't know what's gonna happen at the end of this/the summer.

All our players will leave, and we will get worse players in....a whole new team....cant judge untill we know what players we will have next season

No but the vibes aren't good....we've a huge CVA payment to make crowds will be down...we've only a few players under contract and it's difficult to attract quality without paying for it....which won't happen.

Maybe we could just auction off the 11 starting places next season for each game.  Raise money, reduce wage bill, random performances (see, the only difference would be the club getting more cash in the bank!)
