I don't know about you, but the famous grouse is the most famous grouse that i know of. He's been on telly loads. "Famous" people are 10 a penny these days, but a famous grouse...that's a bit special

It's because it is supposed to be a good type of whisky. So the context of 'famous' is excellent rather than widely known.
